Warning! Matt Millen's on

By STEVE SCHRADER • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • February 2, 2009

NBC might want to trot Matt Millen out in front of the cameras like nothing ever happened, but WDIV, NBC's affiliate in Detroit, isn't about to forgive or forget what he did to the Lions...

Every time a certain familiar face showed up on camera Sunday during NBC's Super Bowl pregame show, Channel 4 ran a scroll at the bottom of the screen:

"Matt Millen was president of the Lions for the worst eight-year run in the history of the NFL. Knowing his history with the team, is there a credibility issue as he now serves as an analyst for NBC Sports?"

I didn't see the scroll -- must not have worked on DirecTV.

Good stuff. I can't believe he landed a gig back on TV already and the fawkin pre-game Superbowl no less!

I was wondering how NBC had the stones to put this guy on TV and actually ask him to analyze games and players.

I'm not a lions fan and I hate matt millen, he's an idiot. And he was horrible as an announcer. He must be buddies with John Madden and dick ebersol cause all three of them came into my restaurant the sunday before the super bowl.

He might not know how to run a team, but he was a great football player.

...and he was a great color commentator in the 90's. Probably one of the best, IMO.

Oh, he was a great Linebacker. Redskins got him that one last year on the downside.

But he's now being asked to analyze, which he OBVIOUSLY isn't qualified for. Put him back in the booth.

Even in the booth, people are still going to laugh at him.

Oh, I've never seen any different, if he does goes back into the booth, I'll welcome it. But there's no room for him a NBC, unless they make it a three man booth.

At least he's better insulated in the booth. And he is very good at it. People will get over it in time. I thought it was a tad early for him to make his return, and at the SB no less.

Why do you have to know how to run a team to analyze a football game? The thing he was worst at was being able to evaluate whether college-level talent would translate to the pro's. That has almost nothing to do with analyzing team strategies in a game.

By the way, Michael Jordan sucks complete ass at running a team as well. From a talent evaluation standpoint the guy is a complete piece of shit moron. Almost clinically retarded, in fact. But, would you say that he has no credibility analyzing a b-ball game?

Was it only college level talent or talent in general? I think both. How about the people he put around him and coaching the team? He failed in every aspect of Football operations. That should disqualify him from making analysis on the Superbowl or anything football related IMO. At least for the 08 season.

I think we can all agree hie knows a thing or two about football. Most of us would have probably made a bigger mess of the Lions. But we're not analyst's on NBC now are we. To put the worse GM in the history of the NFL on air after his team just went 0-16 was a bold move IMO. I can understand why people in Detroit would be pissed.

Apples and Oranges. MJ is the greatest player ever. Which means he has very long length of rope to work with.

Jordan has never step behind the mic to prove that he can do it, Millen did a pretty good job before he took over the Lions, a job he shouldn't have been given to begin with.

As for Jordan, watching him for the years he was with the Wizards. He can't put two words together most of the time to start with.

Actually, the only thing Michael Jordan really knows how to do is play basketball. He can't run a team, he has no eye for talent, he can't even put together a coherent thought....look's like he'd be a pretty big waste if being a good basketball player was somehow unimportant in the grand scheme of things.

Doormat to comeback? Millen tries to remake image after Lion debacle

Matt Millen got another job this week, which to some might definitively prove the sagging U.S. employment market must be on its way back up after hitting rock bottom.

Hearing the news the much-derided former Detroit Lions president and CEO has added the NFL Network to the various media platforms he'll appear on this fall, my thoughts turned to issues involving reinvention, redemption and career rehabilitation.

Let's face it: We love the idea of second acts and career comebacks in America. And these days, nobody in the NFL -- outside of Michael Vick -- has a bigger mountain to climb in terms of remaking his image than Millen, whose name became synonymous with incompetence during his run leading the Lions front office.....

Dude WTF are you smoking??? You don't get to be a worldwide star like MJ without having speaking skills. From his high school days to the end of his playing career he was giving interviews and speaking to the press almost daily. You don't spend that much time in the public eye without having some coaching and guidance on public speaking. Why in the fuck would he want to broadcast games when he's worth over $400m? When you have that kind of cheddar broadcasting games is certainly beneath you and your forte should be owning or running an organization, not spending time talking about it. Now, as for his skills as an NBA executive, well that's a totally different story and if you could win championships from the golf course then the Bobcats would have won two or three already.
