Not sure if you guys were aware or tracking this, but a former Penguins prospect was killed after an opposing player roundhouse kicked him in the jugular with a skate blade...

Police arrest suspect following death of ex-NHL player Adam Johnson

Johnson, 29, died after his neck was slashed by a skate's blade on Oct. 28

Police in England have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of former NHL player Adam Johnson, who tragically died last month when his neck was slashed by the skate of an opposing player.

The South Yorkshire Police released a statement Tuesday confirming an arrest in their investigation into the death of 29-year-old Johnson. The suspect, who was not identified by law enforcement, was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter.

The former Pittsburgh Penguins forward was playing in a Challenge Cup game between the Nottingham Panthers and the Sheffield Steelers at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on Oct. 28 when, during the second period, he suffered a fatal neck wound.

Matt Petgrave, from Sheffield, collided with another player, causing his skate to go up in the air.

The Nottingham Panthers later released a statement confirming Johnson’s death, calling it a "freak accident."

Police said Tuesday that an autopsy revealed his official cause of death was the result of a "fatal neck injury."

"Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive inquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances," Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall said in a statement.
"Adam's death has sent shock waves through many communities, from our local residents here in Sheffield to ice hockey fans across the world. We know these communities will expect us to handle this investigation with the same professionalism, fairness and sensitivity as any other and request that members of the public refrain from comment and speculation which could hinder this process. Our thoughts remain with all affected by this devastating incident as inquiries continue."The death of Johnson, who appeared in 13 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 and 2020, has reignited the debate around player safety and protective gear.

Several NHL players have since spoken out and worn protective neck gear during NHL games.

The NHL currently does not mandate protective neck gear.
The article states that it was a freak accident, but this guy has a history of dirty hits and questionable actions similar to Tom Wilson. And if you watch the video (which I don't recommend) he swings his leg 180 degrees and throws a roundhouse kick right into Adam's neck. To me it certainly looked deliberate af

I have kept up with it a decent bit. I have been more from the side of what additional protection is being considered for players though having played so much myself and been 100% against kneck guards the moment I was allowed to not wear them. I have yet to watch the video though. Not sure why as I am not the squeamish type or anything. I figured it had to be a freak accident though. This is just crazy. That said if it was deliberate more so then I think the player safety part might fade right back out the window it came through which I also don't think is great. There have been a lot of advancements since I started playing 30 years ago and a kneck guard was this puffy foam filled this that velcroed around your neck. Thin kevlar cut proof cloth is a thing now.

Hopefully, he goes down hard if they can prove it although in sports it rarely happens. Just look at some of the crazy past NHL things that have happened and tried to be tried for assault but wouldn't stick.

I have yet to figure out what to make of the Avs this year. They have either looked really really good or really really really bad. There is almost no in between.

See Pens. Similar situation IMO.

I mean, they could play like the Bruins just to choke it all away in the first round......

The Canucks are definitely a surprise for sure. That said I think they come crashing back down. If you look at the rate of goals the core players are scoring there is no way that is sustainable long term.

The NHL has a great game but the way it doles out discipline is a complete total joke.

That, folks, is a TWO-HANDED swing of a stick at the player's head by Trouba. Baseball swing basically.

Should be at least 10 game suspension for ANYONE.

The Avs are finally playing some decent hockey as of late. It is a small sample size so far in only 3 games but Ivan Prosvetov who they claimed off waivers from the Coyotes looks like a really solid backup right now. Been very impressed with him so far.

I was honestly shocked when I saw the C on his sweater given his dirty headhunting nature, same with Marchand. I guess this is the direction the NHL wants to go with their leadership

He still has his antics but it's nothing like taking a 2-handed baseball swing with a stick at someone's head.

I get being edgy is a needed element in hockey. The intimidation factor is real. But, Trouba is now becoming the new Torres of this era...just a liability on skates who can destroy someone's career...He needs to learn where that line is because frankly, he does not have one.

This is not saying he's not a good D-man...cuz, he is. But, for every great play/hit he does, he reminds us again of what he can do because the NHL's discipline committee is run by dumbasses.

I don't even get why. I mean I get he still wants to play but wouldn't going to a playoff contender be the desire? Did no one want him? I mean the Red Wings on the way up but they are certainly not close to being a contender.

I have given up on even commenting on player discipline cause it just feels like a waste of time while the league does nothing for major things but sometimes hands out games for nothing acts.

Having followed him as a Hawks fan, I can probably wager 2 factors: He loved playing with Debrincat was one and the other, having a GM in Stevie Y was a draw. Let's be honest, Kane's a future HoFer and having to play for a GM who is one maybe partly a draw.

Still, it stings. I mean, there's less of a rivalry now because they are no longer in the Norris Division but still...man, did I have a mega-hate for the Red Wings.

I mean, there are hits we've debated on here. This is not even a borderline/gray-area hit. The guy took a baseball swing at another's head. What is there to debate?

Oh for sure there is no debating that this should have been a suspension. It boarder lines on the punch tackle against the Colorado player years ago that ended up in assault charges.
