Canadiens make shocking, dismaying choice to select Mailloux in draft
From Draft weekend, this has to be the big one...the Habs pulled a Yotes and picked a player that had a big do-not-draft label on his forehead...
Talk about PR and stupidity...

Also from Draft weekend, Sabres continue to dismantle their core and blow it up, sending Reinhart to Panters: https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...st-round-pick/

Nucks trade for OEL: https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...provide-value/
Not sure about this one as the player isn't the same that he was like...5 years ago and at THAT cap hit. If the Oiler fans are up in arms about Keith with 2 years at ~5M, Vancity fans must be ready to have another riot about OEL then.

I'm no Leafs observer but can someone explain why Hyman is worth THAT much? I know he can play but what I'm reading in what Edmonton is about to throw at him is bewildering: https://www.sportsnet.ca/nhl/article...an-nears-exit/

Fleury traded to Hawks by Vegas.
Wow...first Seth Jones and now, Fleury...I guess Hawks are serious on returning to the playoffs.

Hmmm...reading that Fleury may just retire as he doesn't want to uproot his family to another city on a 1 year contract. Just watch Hawks flip him to Pittsburgh for some assets.

Hawks are definitely making some big moves, they got Fleury for literally nothing! Curious to see if he will play for them or try and retire or go somewhere else.

Hawks traded for Fleury and then, flipped Seabrook (who will never play) to the Bolts for their future 2nd round pick and Tyler Johnson.

How do you trade your best player coming off his best year?
FOR NOTHING????
Although the Yankees who are in serious bullpen trouble just traded among their best bullpen guys for nothing.

Fleury's trade was cap related and nothing else. The new coach prefers Lehner over Flower even though Fleury carried them this past year

Shocked yesterday of the Fleury trade. They did him dirty as well letting him find out from twitter. I kind of hope he decides not to play for them.

So, how do you guys think your teams did in UFA day 1?
Avs re-upped their Captain to a hefty price. They lost their goaler but traded for one in Kuemper. Oilers threw a pile of money at Hyman who should look good with McDavid but then again, so could a pile of bricks.
I am still not sure what I'm seeing in LA's signing of Danault as while I like him alot as a player, I don't know why you'd pay him that much to anchor your 3rd line?
Go figure. Hamilton to the Devils I guess was the big fish.

I had hoped we would have been able to sign Landeskog back at around 6-6.5 if we were giving him 8 years. I was fine with 7-7.5 over 5-6 years. That said I would rather have him on the team for the extra half-million it took. He does only have a full NMC for the first four years so there is that. I hope he doesn't fall off a cliff though and can stay productive so he can retire with the Avs. He has been here through the worst years.
Glad they let Gru walk as I can't believe Seattle paid him what they did. I don't think he is worth it. I think some of his numbers were a product of our system. I hate who much we had to trade to get Kuemper but I think he is actually a better goalie that Gru.

The Avs are not the Oilers and are 4 lines deep and have defensive depth. The goalie does not need to make game-saving stops ever 3 seconds.

Heck, not sure I even like Chicago's payment of Jake McCabe. Seth Jones, while I think is good, is also overpaid when they re-upped him...I dunno. Some stupid contracts yesterday though I think the worst of the pile was Edmonton's signings and Vancouver's moves.
Though, on a Pens front, I'm seriously thinking Fleury will be back in your city. He'll say nope to Hawks for family reasons and but will go back to PA because at least his family is familiar with that local. Guessing Hawks ask for Jarry and some other prospect?

Perry takes his services to Tampa. That team still looks scary and only thing stopping them from contending is injuries next season.

Well, lots of overpayments, man. I think the best signing was Saad to St. Poo today...top 6 winger who is very good 2-way player for $4.5M? Dayum.

I would have loved to get Saad, I still think he has a lot of upside. We signed a bunch of cheap bums instead

Basically a heel turn for me for that guy joining St. Poo. Dammit.
I think Pens have always found a way to retool without going for the mega-signings. And I still think the next chip to fall is Fleury.

Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury will play for the Chicago Blackhawks this season, he announced on Sunday, after previously being uncertain about his future. A source confirmed the news to The Athletic earlier.
"Just wanted to let you know I'm in," Fleury said in a video taken in front of a plane. "Let's get to work."

Fleury, 36, spent the last four seasons with the Golden Knights, guiding them to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season in 2017-18 and three more playoff appearances the past three seasons. He is coming off a career season, winning the Vezina Trophy and Jennings Trophy after posting personal bests in save percentage (.928) and goals-against average (1.98) in 36 appearances.

Wow, I'm stunned esp. when all the insider reporting had him retiring...Obviously, I'm pleased to have Fleury join the Hawks as he's by default one of the greatest goalers to suit up in in the Hawks sweater...

Love watching Fleury play so glad to see it. Don't like having to play him so many times a year though. The Hawks could end up being a dangerous team with all their signings this offseason.

He's a team first guy and a great teammate, as much as I'm sure he didn't want to move his family, he's always going to do what's best for his team

Anyways, my feelings for the Blackhawks are a bit mixed right now...I'm stunned and happy with their big moves but now, I have to wonder if they did it to divert the attention from this trainwreck.

FWIW, the Hawks brass and whoever else was involved in covering up the sordid affair gets all the cancel-culture coming to them...
