Pissed is an understatement.

Why not pay some of thair cap & give the Coyote GM a blow job?

Hawks also ship out Niklas Hjalmarsson to Coyotes...

Looks like they realize trying the same thing is not going to get a Cup. Similar to Pens, keep some members of the original core but get younger...

I like Saad coming back because while Panarin can score, the Hawks got pushed around way too much by the Preds on the way to getting swept.

Young D-men who are projected to be good ones do not grow on trees. Your blueline is ancient by most standards...and like Chicago, you think trying the same thing will get the Rangers where they need to be? I suspect this is just a part 1 to a larger part 2 for the Rangers. Maybe Duchene gets traded by the Nordiques to your team.

And , I guess you're not used to seeing key parts leave like I am from Chicago. Being going since 2010...

Young dmen with a -13 are in demand?
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/p...php?pid=130876

I suppose that is an improvement over the -34 in the OHL & -18 in the AHL

The Crunch was a non-playoff team? And we all know the Yotes were lousy too. And the Sarnia Sting was a 17-44 record team in 2013-14. Dude, I would think you knew a bit more hockey than to judge +/- at face value.

FFS. We signed Russell, an ok D man, for 4 years, at 4M. He's up from 3.1M, before.

He is not worth 4M. Glad he didn't get his asking price of 4.5M, but still... sigh.

Not sure he's worth that money. That's Hjalmarsson-money and that guy is a top-pairing D-man.

Oh well, Sharelly relly likes Russell Peters.

I agree. I still think it's kind of a wtf deal... Could've been worse, I suppose.

the thing is, if the oil didn't pay him 4M and he decided to walk, that opens another hole in the defensive line up. We are already down one guy for the year due to injury. We also lost Grifin Reinhard to LV. If anything, GR would've maybe been a fringe player at best, only called up if someone else got hurt, but now we don't even have that option.

And as we know, good D men don't come cheap, nor are they plentiful. I'm thinking chiarelli saw this as a cheaper alternative, at least for the time being. They will have to pony up the big bucks for when they sign Draisaitl this year.

Reinhart is a tough one for Edmonton. Sha-RLY gave up alot for him only to not have the kid work out and lose him for zip.

Ah well, only GM that never makes mistakes is Deano. Er, Blake now.

You could very well be right. But we could only protect so many players... I don't think chia was thrilled about who LV chose. But then again, LV likely isn't stupid either and went for the best asset they could get.

Edmonton drafted a Japanese player, 22nd overall today, if I'm not mistaken. Who did #1 go to? Who was #1 even?

Is anyone super shocked edmonton didn't get #1? I'm sure Yumcha would have suffered an aneurysm if they did

First time in 23412423498126492146234 years the Oilers did not draft #1 overall. Figures it is the one year where the draft's #1 pick is so-so.

hey, why is it our fault?!

he had a chance to reboot in St. Louis... and failed. Miserably. Like, not even a remote chance.

I did wonder if he should have stayed in the minors for a year before coming up to the NHL, but I dunno... I guess what's done is done. He did well enough prior to moving up into the NHL to be drafted first overall, but I couldn't help but wonder if he was just playing with guys who really were able to set him up to succeed. Once he moved up into the NHL, it seemed he couldn't rely as much on his team mates and had to produce on his own... and couldn't. I dunno. Just speculating. Maybe we did just crush him.

A young kid's development in the NHL is often a windy path. But, unless you're talking about a McDavid or similar generational talent, there is no player that just makes the transition from minors to pro seamlessly. I suspect Yak's accelerated path with the Oilers during their dark years ruined him...There are just some things you cannot unlearn? Dunno. But, it's unfortunate. From what I read, he's a good kid too.

He was already tainted when he got to STL, kind of like what you did to Justin Schultz, only we were able to revive him

What are you talking about? Plenty of players transition from minors to pro alright. Doesn't have to be seamless... but you can't just become, over time, one of the first assets standing on the ice. They don't have to be McJesus caliber, but not tons of Forwards and Centers completely fall apart like Yak did when they make the switch. The thing is, Yak did ok in his first year, and then got progressively worse. He was just special and needed to be coddled... while the oilers were busy trying not to be bottom of the barrel again. It's nice that's he's a good kid. Unfortunately, being a good kid doesn't net you a contract. Hall transitioned alright. Nugent-Hopkins transitioned alright. And neither of those are generational players, by any stretch.

I won't disagree with Schultz. D men do take longer- much longer than Fs or Cs to become good. MacTavish (old coach/GM/50% of the failing poison that plagued the oilers) was a tool and was touting Schultz as being the next Norris cup trophy winner before Schultz even strapped a pair of skates on in the NHL. Well of course the fans gobble it up and as soon as the kid makes his first mistake, the fans are saying WTF. Way to put the pressure on. I'd say there was way more pressure on Schultz than there ever was on Yak.

There's also rumors that their locker room was toxic, due to certain players. Who? I have no idea. There were rumors Hall was one of them, but there were others. Schultz admitted he just needed to start fresh, somewhere new. And it really panned out for him.

There were quite a few first overall busts before Yakupov, and he won't be the last one so it is what it is.

Yup. Even Erik Johnson could be considered a "bust" in some ways maybe. Dunno. You just almost never know with draft picks...unless they are generational-types.
