Yes they can't afford him. But Kessel's been netting 35-40 as a Leave. With no notable centre. He'd net 45-55 on the Pengoons. That's good return.

Look at his numbers and compare them to Deano's greatest player ever, Jeff Carter...now, excuse me because maybe Moog will REALLY return to tell me to put down the bong and that Jeff Carter should never be compared to such a lousy player in Sharp and rather, Crosby or Toews instead.

All Oshie knows is how to choke in the playoffs.

@ Blues...

Sharp is Kunitz v 2.0 he is older than Oshie and his production has slipped.

He's a career 20-30 goal scorer, and for 8 mil a year, the Pens can't afford that

Yeah, won't dispute Phil's talent...his work ethic and personality...quite another. And how the rest of the players think of him is interesting...look at how he was picked last and then made into a gag at the all-star games by his peers.

Personally, I think Edmonton should think hard about acquiring Phil's know-how, leadership, and winning pedigree...to teach McJesus and all the other bazillion #1 overall picks the Oilers have.

Like I said, 20-30 goal average scorer He had a couple 37 goal seasons and got his big contract. He's a scoring winger, but I don't see him as an elite winger worth 8 mil a year, and like I said, the Pens can't afford him

If they'd take Old Man Chara and his permanent knee damage or retain 80% of Kessels salary I'd consider it.

The B's can afford him about as well as Chicago could.

There seems to be a great disconnect between where players and their agents value themselves and the reality of building a competitive team under the cap. Not to knock Chicago but 10 mil for Toews and Kane is ridiculous, not because they aren't worth it but because NO nhl player is worth that percentage of your budget.

The players keep wanting pay raises but one players raise in a year is typically more than the cap went up. The GM's are screwing themselves by giving out the contracts and the players are screwing the teams and the fans by not understanding the economics of the cap. I see us hitting another stumbling block in the financial side of the league. The player pay raises are increasing at a much faster rate than the cap.

If we keep going like this, 3 on 3 won't just be for overtime, it will be for regulation as no team will be able to afford to have 5 players on the ice.

The raises and cap issues are only getting worse, everyone made fun of Pittsburgh because they were one of the first teams to embrace the superstar model, but like BL said, any team that's competitive is having the same cap issues. And as I've already pointed out, the Hawks are going to be gutted after this season due to free agency and contracts coming due.

Bingo. Then again, any sport that has the cap faces these issues, no?

To continually ice/field a competitive team DESPITE a draconian cap is hence worth noting...so, teams like Chicago, LA, Boston, Pittsburgh, New York, Anaheim, and etc. deserve some recognition. Then again, their cores are impressive.

And no true formula either. Hawks have won 3 Cups now and each time dealt with changes due to the cap.

Kings, won it twice and relatively had little turnover but then again, missed the playoffs...but, having Slapya Titsov decide his GF/wife was an opposing player during a game probably had a pile to do with that.

It depends on the team...per what I wrote just above, I think it does depend on the core...some cores are better than others. The Pens are another that have a great core but their replenishment of support players has been kinda putrid and also, injuries have pwned them.

Toronto's core? Horrid. Not even a "core".

I would say football doesn't but that because the word "contract" in the NFL doesn't mean the same thing as it does in the rest of the English language. Contracted players can be cut and players can choose to renegotiate their contracts.

NHL GM's negotiate primarily out of fear. Fear of losing the player and fear of the player hurting them on another team.

The B's are in that situation with Dougie Hamilton. Rumor is he want's 6 millions a year. The problem is he's not worth 6 million a year right now. Maybe in 2-4 years he will be worth that much but to give him a 5 year 6 million deal is a huge risk. He may never improve over what he is now and never be worth what he's being paid but if you sign the deal out of fear of losing him, you're stuck with him no matter what. If he never becomes worth what his salary is he becomes untradeable making you situation worse.

Personally, If someone were to extend an offer sheet to him in the over 7 million (either because they think he's worth it or because they're trying to goad the B's into overpaying and worsening their cap situation) I say let him go and take the draft pick compensation. Especially if it's Edmonton since they typically have very good draft positions.

Really they all need to look at Belichick, he doesn't care who you are, he's not overpaying you and has no trouble cutting ties with fan favorites if he feels it's the best move for the team.

Bruins traded the right to overpay Carl soderberg to Colorado for a 2016 6th round pick. Carl is looking for 5 mil a year which would make him the highest paid player in the nhl who is blind in 1 eye.

It's only a 6th round pick but I think Colorado got hosed.

They wasted no time, 5 years 4.75 mil per year. I take back what I said about Toews and Kanes contracts, apparently they should be getting paid about 15-20 mil per year each.

@ Oilers...their fans were so hyped that Edmonton could offer sheet Dougie and now, their biggest rivals snatch him from Boston.

And what do the Oilers need above all else? Defense. Cuz, clearly, all the #1 overall forwards are really getting them a Cup soon.
