Just started playing golf a couple months ago.
For the most part, I am self taught from Youtube / my dad's advice.
I played 18 holes for the first time yesterday and shot 84 on a Par-54 executive course (Lots of Par 3s). I have a lot of work to do .. but I'd say I am addicted! Cannot wait to go back out on Thursday

Tiger's Body Breaking Down
Golf must be a young man's game...
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The "minor" knee and Achilles injuries that kept Tiger Woods from playing and practicing since the Masters have limited his appearance at The Players Championship to nine holes.
Woods withdrew after shooting an ugly 6-over 42 at TPC Sawgrass, where he took a triple-bogey 7 on the fourth hole and was clearly limping before shutting down his round.

"I'm having a hard time walking," Woods said after his half-round. He hit only one green in regulation and made no birdies.
It is the second straight year that Woods had to withdraw during the PGA Tour's signature event but just the fourth time in his professional career that he has withdrawn from a tournament after starting it.
In last year's Players, only his third event after taking a monthlong break to deal with personal issues, Woods withdrew seven holes into the final round with a neck issue.
This time Woods was unable to make it to the 10th tee, and given his lack of preparation and the way he looked, it was not surprising. He winced on several tee shots.
"The knee acted up and then the Achilles followed after that and then the calf started cramping up," Woods said. "Everything started getting tight, so it's just a whole chain reaction."
Woods has had four operations on his left knee, including a reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament just a week after he won the 2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines. It was there where Woods competed after having not played since the Masters. It was later learned that he was playing with a broken bone in his left leg as well.
Tiger Woods is out of The Players Championship due to injury for the second year in a row.
This time Woods said he injured his left knee while attempting to hit a shot from pine straw during the third round of the Masters last month. He also injured his left Achilles that day -- not the same Achilles he hurt in 2008-09 -- but shot 67 during the final round to tie for fourth.
His game appeared to be coming around with the help of instructor Sean Foley, but this now throws Woods' immediate future into doubt. He did not practice again after the Masters until Monday; he played nine-hole practice rounds here Tuesday and Wednesday.
"This morning, felt fine during warm-up and then as I played, it progressively got worse. ... The treatment's been good. It's been getting better. It just wasn't enough."
Woods said his doctors told him it was OK to play.
"The more rest I get, the better it would be, obviously," he said. "Obviously, it's a big event. I wanted to come back for it and play, and unfortunately I wasn't able to finish."
Woods never truly got going. He hit a poor drive on the first hole and found himself hitting an awkward chip for his third and made bogey. At the par-5 second, after a good drive, he left his second shot in rough near the green, then tried a flop shot that came up short. He settled for par.
It was at the short par-4 fourth where things really turned badly. He hit a poor tee shot that he said hurt his knee. Woods then chunked his second shot into the water, took a drop and, having only 30 yards to clear the hazard, hit railroad ties and saw the ball bounce back and get wet. He wedged on but was still outside of playing partners Martin Kaymer and Matt Kuchar who had birdie putts. Woods made his putt for a 7.
"The tee shot was (leg related)," he said. "It grabbed me on the tee shot there but the pitch shots weren't. Those were just bad pitch shots. Those were just awful."
The 42 was his worst nine-hole score at TPC Sawgrass but not his worst on tour. He had a 43 on the back nine at Quail Hollow last year and also had a 43 on the back nine at Bay Hill in 2007. In all, he's shot 43 four times during his pro career.
Woods said on Tuesday that he wanted to play this week in order to prepare for next month's U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. The start of the tournament is five weeks away, and Woods would typically be expected to play in the Memorial in three weeks.
All of that is in doubt now.
"I don't know," Woods said when asked if he has returned to square one in his game. "I just finished nine holes. Give me a few days to see what the docs say, and we'll take a look at it."

Haven't played in a few weeks. Got the new Taylormade R11 driver, cleveland gap wedge, and Adams hybrid. The R11 is pretty sweet but I need to learn it's nuances more.

I've made it out a few times. Couple of good "sides" but haven't hung on for a whole 18-holes yet. 43/50 last Monday. 1st birdie of the year (I think) as well.
93 is fine, but I'd like to put together a few 43/43 rounda.
Although it's not exactly "nice" anymore with temps in the mid-90's.

Tiger, according to his website, will not be playing in the US Open... at 35 on rocky legs, I'm believing Jack's record is more unreachable as each event passes.

Thinking about trying my hand at this. Other than going to a driving range and whacking a few I know nothing about this at all except for what I see.
Best advice for an absolute beginner?
How do I even choose a set of clubs? Would you recommend picking one type of club like a driver or an iron and using just that at the range? Or should I try a few different types, i.e., get a whole set?

golf.com has instructional videos.
you can get a used set of golf clubs (irons) off ebay for $100. make sure they are all the same set. a taylor made 9 iron has a different loft than a callaway.
just go to the range and start hitting balls. if you have a friend that plays ask them to go and show you the proper grip and stance.
once you can hit the ball pretty straight and some distance, you may be ready for a real course. I wouldn't go on a course until at least a few times at the range to get used to the swing and such.

And to add... the game is like heroine. The more you play, the better clubs your want, etc.
As Rounder said, start with a basic (used) set until you decide to "shoot-up." A couple of things or three:
1) Brand of ball really don't matter for 99.9% of golfers. Titleist has been tracking the average Joe's score from the 1950's balls to the balata's to the Pro V1... average score still 100.
2) You get 14 clubs... drop a driver and instead get a 2 iron through wedge (9 clubs), a putter that you have tried several times (1 club), a 3 metal with 18 degrees of loft (1 club), a sand wedge (1 club), a five metal (1 club), and a lob wedge (1 clubs).
3) Why I emphasize the wedges in the bag so much is because you can practice in your yard and kill the competition with your short-game. I think this touch, when found, and imagination are the bread and butter of the game.
4) Jack Nicklaus' "My Game" is the best instruction video ever.
5) Use the interlocking grip... not the Vardon grip (i.e., two pinky fingers locked together on the grip). Jack plays this way.

Best advice? GO GET LESSONS! It's a much easier, and more enjoyable game, when you have the basic fundamentals instilled in your swing. I started playing when I was around 4 and by the time I was 13, I was down to around a 15 handicap. I then started taking lessons when I was around 14 and now I'm down to a +2.8 (I'm 18 now.) Lessons make ALL the difference, even if it is only a couple.

^Best advice by Ross the boss. Lessons changed my game so much. If you learn bad habits it will take that much longer to correct them down the line. Things like posture, opening your hips, rotating your shoulders require muscle memory so the more you practice (the correct way), the more comfortable you will be on the links.
Short game (<100 yards) is 80% of the game. Drive for show, putt for dough.
I wouldn't bring out the driver until you've played for a year. You can tee off with a long iron or use a hybrid or fairway wood.

+1000 on lessons.
In addition to the Nicklaus vid, read Harvey Penick's Little Red Book - it's a very easy read. More useful golf tips in that book than in a decades worth of golf mags. Among them: "Get lessons. Face it, your pro can fix in 15 minutes what it will take you six weeks to figure out on your own."

+ 12 last night with one birdie. reached a par 5 in 2, but 3 putt, ugh.
I feel I am improving, but my putting and drives were a little off last night.

Here's a putting excercise for you to try.
On a practice green find a 6 foot straight putt. A little uphill is OK, if that's the best you can find.
Now make 10 in a row. If you miss, start over; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, damn!! .... 1, 2, 3, ...., etc.
The goal is to get your 10-in-a-row run in less than 30 total putts. If not, take a break at 30 then come back and try again.
I usually use 3 balls to reduce the back-and-forth to the hole.
Best I've done is (iirc) 15 or 18 in a row from the 2nd or 3rd stroke.
This does a couple of really good things. 1.) You can really start to feel and develop your stroke, rhythm, etc. 2.) believe it not, it builds a lot of pressure on making putts. It's a GD pisser when you've got a good run going and blow it. By the time your get to 8 or 9 in row the pressure is on and finally, 3.) once you've made 10 6-foot putts in a row, your confidence on course to make anything 2 - 10 feet just skyrockets.

I could never get it going both except for a few times... either drove the ball great and putted like crap or vice-versa.
I think my detriment in putting was playing for the PPA in my teenage years.

Anyone see the finish at Riviera? Most exciting I've seen in some time. But I wonder why Phil didn't use the driver on the second playoff hole (No. 10) when he's been hitting it so well?

Howell - local boy makes good - on the upper portion of the leaderboard. But of those on Page 1 right now, I'll take Bubba Watson. Who can't root for a fella named Bubba to win in Augusta Georgia?
But, as we all should know, the tournament doesn't really start until the 2nd nine on Sunday.

Solid Masters. I was able to skip class and went up there for a couple of days.
I would have loved to see Freddy win it, such a nice guy and it would've been cool to see him get another jacket at 52.
Phil would have been great, he's certainly a class act and is really personable. Last year my mom got to talking to Amy and Phil and somehow brought up my dad, who passed away from cancer a few years ago. Anyways, we talked to him yesterday afternoon and he asked how we were doing and remembered talking about my dad which I thought was pretty cool
Congrats to Bubba though, he definitely played well.

awesome finish. bubba crying after shows his true colors, hes not a machine but someone whom loves the game and pours his emotions into it. His father died shortly after the 2010 Ryder Cup, he just adopted a baby boy, embraced his mother after the win. Good for him, he deserves it. Masters is an amazing tournament
