Golf: News and Discussion Thread

Didn't see a golf thread dedicated to actually playing, besides the odd tiger thread and some clubs advice thread.

So, who plays golf? I am just starting to get back into it, and somewhat serious. Bought a set of used Taylor Made irons, a new 2008 burner driver, 2009 burner 3 and 5 woods, TM Rossa putter and a brand new stand bag.

Have been going to the range once in awhile since I was younger, but I have started to go more regularly and went to a real 9-hole course recently. Shot really poorly, but I figure I can only get better if I practice at it.

I go to the local pitch and putt a lot.

Also this is a sport I can play when I get older, unlike hockey or softball where my body won't hold up when I'm 60.

Playing this afternoon (9-holes).

Been playing since I was in my early twenties
Consistantly shoot in the high 80s, low 90s.
Really working on trying to shape the ball this season. Might be looking at new irons soon.

Callaway Big Bertha 460 10 degree

Ping I3+ Blue dot 5-PW

Callaway Forged + vintage 52, 56, 60 wedges

Taylor Made Rescue Mid 3 and 5

Callaway 2-ball putter

Stats from Titleist... Average golfers score in 1960 was 100 on a par 72 course. In 2002, despite all the advances in balls and clubs, the average score was 100.

But it is an addictive damn game. I have in a very small case all the balls I made eagle with. Of course the next hole could be a snowman, but that's why we tee it up.

Went to the par 3 course this weekend. Got like 8 or 9 pars The most annoying thing is when I bink the drive 10' from the pin, and still end up 3 putting

Went to the range today. My irons were going pretty straight, some a little to the right.

My woods and driver still has a nasty slice. Anything I can do to fix that?

1) Close your stance
or
2) Choke up on the club
or
3) adjust your grip to a strong grip
or
4) take a 1/2 step closer to the ball at address
or
5) play the ball off your left toe

Try each or a combination of each. Most importantly make sure your right elbow is pointing to the ground on your backswing.

I've probably just have given you a duck hook in you game.

Haven't played in ages. When my back gets a bit stronger again, I need to.

For clubs - a cheapo set I got from Target years ago, with the occasional used other club.

I can actually hit it further Happy Gilmore-style than normal, but it just takes off to the right. Never played enough 18 to figure out what my average score would be.

I've had some free time lately, so I've been playing a good amount. Since my sister got married, I've been playing a lot with my brother-in-law who has been a collegate golf coach for more than 10 years. On top of that, he played a short time as a pro, and still has TONS of game. When we play from the back tees ,7000-7300 yards depending on where we play, I'm usually a +4-5. My brother-in-law is easily a -2 depending on the day. He's heading to Houston on Monday for an open qualifier. If he makes it, maybe he'll put me on the bag.

I've been eyeing a new set of irons lately. I've been playing Ping S59's for about 6 years, and I'm really wanting to go to something forged. Here's what I'm considering.

Mizuno MP-62 w/ KBS Tour 120gram shafts, and decade mulitcompound grips.

Other than that, I play:

R9 9.5* driver w/ 65gram Fujikura Motore
Adams Speedline 9032Ti 14.5* fairway metal w/ stiff Voodoo NV
Adams Idea Pro 18* hybrid w/ stiff Blue "By You"
Calaway X-forged 52* and 60* wedges
Scotty Cameron Newport Two Oil can (1998) which i just picked up and is super solid...

Nice blades Vector. I'm still using a 5 y/o set of Ping G2 irons steel shaft, Cleveland sand and lob wedges, TaylorMade #3/4 hybrids, Scotty Cameron putter and an Adams 460 cc graphite shaft driver. I play once a week with the old man. Can shoot in the high 90s, nothing to brag about.

Thanks Rick. I'm heading to play the resort course at La Cantera tomorrow as a birthday present from my sis. I'll let y'all know how it goes. The resort course is one of my favorites. Great layout...

Awesome I love the roller coaster in the background. That is totally kickass. I'm playing tomorrow afternoon with the old man and my friend and his GF visiting from Cali. My friend is a noob so we are playing a par 60 course which runs right along the ocean. My friend's GF is Korean however and I suspect she is a sandbagger and will probably school me

Yesterday went pretty well. I had 38 on the front with one bad pitch on #5 which gave me a par on when I was pin high in 2. +1 on the back through 14 until my sis decided to have us stop playing for 20 minutes so we could go the clubhouse to pick her up. It was all down hill from there. Ended up with 41 on the back. I just never got back into any kind of rhythm. Ah well, she was kind enough to pay for us to play, so you won't find me complaining. All in all, it was a fun afternoon.

I ordered my new Mizunos and I'm hoping that they ship on Friday!

Roy: You're the Mexican Mac O'Grady. Figure out why I'm shanking...I'm catching it on the hosel? Moving my head? I'm laying it off?
Romeo: That, too.
Roy: I'm pronating.
Romeo: When you're not supinating.
Roy: I'm clearing too early, too late. My swing feels like an unfolding chair!
Romeo: Put your change in your left pocket. Go on, do it. Now, tie your left shoe in a double knot.
Roy: Tie my left shoe?
Romeo: Right now, do it! Turn the hat backwards. Turn your hat around. Do it, Roy! Take this tee and stick it behind your left ear.
Roy: I look like a fool!
Romeo: What do you think you look like shooting chili peppers up Lee Janzen's ass? Do it now or I'm going to quit. I swear to God I'll quit. Good. Take this ball and hit it up the fairway.
[Roy hits the ball straight]
Romeo: You're ready.
Roy: How'd I do that?
Romeo: Because you're not thinking about shanking or Molly. You're not thinking. You're looking like a fool, hitting the ball pure and simple...
Roy: Fuck you.
Romeo: Fuck me, huh? Well, you're cured.
Roy: That's it?
Romeo: That's it. Your brain was getting in the way.
Roy: That's hardly ever been the case.
Romeo: No shit, Sherlock.

Well, looks like my Mizuno MP-62's that I ordered have been pushed back to the 11th for shipping. First, the KBS shafts I ordered weren't available. Now that the shafts are available, Mizuno is backordered on a couple of the iron heads... At least customer service is sending me a free hat and towel for the trouble...

I also moved to 52* and 58* Cleveland CG15 Satin Chrome wedges that are tour conforming. Can't tell any difference on spin or control from the short grass. From the rough or any wet at all, it's like night and day...

It's very pure. The red cord grip that came on it was a little harsh as far as putter head feel, but I installed a black Studio Select grip on it after I had the putter cut down to 34". Since then it's been the most solid putter I've owned.

I get a lot of compliments on the oil can finish with the lime green paint scheme...

Went pitch and putt last night under the lights. Shot 7 over for 18 holes, including 2 birdies! Every time I go, I shoot a better score. Can't really complain.

Ended up with 76 at Canyon yesterday, including a double on the beautiful hole pictured above. I wasn't driving the ball well, but had my share of good swings. Putted solidly too. It was a HOT afternoon, but we had a good time.

I don't know what I changed but I can hit my driver straight now. Some went 230 yards, even. Most were 200-210. Also hitting my 3 wood around 190-210 and my 5 wood around 180-190.

Has anyone played on a course of a PGA Tour stop?

I've played Harbor Town in SC... the PGA stops there the week after the Masters. Veerrry small greens. I played from the back tees a few weeks after the tour left. It was a humbling experience... couldn't even shoot the weather and it was HOT that day.

Of course two achieveable golfer goals are Pebble Beach and St. Andrews. Augusta National is out of the question unless my BF in Atlanta advances from a well known patent attorney.

I switched to a brand new Adams Idea driver that my old man wasn't using and it made a huge difference in my driving from my 9.5 Cobra. I'm regularly driving 220-250 yards and am using the stock graphite shaft. With the Cobra driver, I switched out to a Green NV shaft and cut it down 1 inch.

My Taylor Made #3 and 4 hybrids are working better. I shortened my back stroke and it has made a world of difference in terms of accuracy and consistency. I thought with the steel shafts that I would be able to rotate my shoulders completely on the backswing and stay accurate but I can't help but move my head ever so slightly which causes me to hit off the heel of the club. Shortening the swing has alleviated this problem by keeping my whole posture more still and in plane.

Coupla noob questions:

1) Does the ball matter? I just opened a "new" case of orange top flite X-outs, that were sitting in my closet, hahaha.
2) What is the purpose of multiple wedges beyond the PW and SW?
3) What are the hybrid woods supposed to replace in your bag?

I play with Pro V1x my patient gives me for free and the only issue I have is getting pissed after losing one of those $4 balls in the drink even though they were free. Now I reserve them strictly for the putting green.

My other patient has the hookup at a local muni and gives me hundreds of balls they find at the course. All those balls need is a little wash and they're good to go. Range balls are noticeably inferior as far as driving distance, etc. You might save a handful of these for the difficult island greens surrounded by water on all sides, etc.

The lobwedge is my most used club besides my putter when I'm on the apron or within 10-15 yards of the green. If the trap is deep, I'll use the LW instead of my SW. Cleveland makes the best wedges IMO.

Hybrids replace your long irons. They are more forgiving and I'll use them instead of driver if I'm on a narrow fairway where accuracy is a premium rather than length.

1) For anyone besides a pro, no. The ball doesn't matter. Titleist has been keeping 50 years of stats and the average player still shoots 100 despite ball changes.

2) You can make the most difference in your score with your short game. So you don't hit the green in regulation, it's that third shot that will shave strokes. Some people like a lob wedge, some a sand. If it's hardpan, I may use a 5 iron to bump and run. Again for the average player, more than two wedges is an overkill since the average distance hit between a LW,SW, and PW won't vary that much.

3). Hybrids like a 5 wood or 7 wood are commonly referred to a utility clubs. A 5 wood can take the place of a 3 iron. Alot of people can hit a utility club out of light ruff better than an iron.

Oh... forgot about the golf ball story. I used to drop $50 on a dozen brand balls, then I started to hit Lady Precepts (yeah everyone laughed), but the compression was so low on that ball that I thought it carried further in the cold winters versus the 100 compress balls. My entire success, like anything in golf, is between the ears. You always putt better for a few weeks with a new putter or drive with a new driver until that placebo fades away.

Long story short from tee to green, give me a rock for a ball. But on the putting green, the softness of the balata golf balls seem to roll better.

For the life of me, the short game eludes my grasp. If I'm ten yards from the green, I'll soon be thirty yards away on the other side. I can't hit a high shot to save my life, and trying to put any spin on the ball? Yeah, right.

It's been over a year since I even swung a club, easy. Once the heat breaks I need to hit the 9-holer.

Your hands are ahead of the clubface at impact essentially delofting the club. If you are a righty, play some ship shots with the ball moved up in your stance toward the left toe. If you need, open the clubface some too.

I used to practice so many short shots in my yard, that at my best I could stand 10 feet away from a window in front of my house, take a full swing, and sail it over the top of the house within 10 feet of the other side.

This is the problem IMO. I play 18 holes once a week and am only good enough to shoot in the high 90s. When I was playing twice a week, taking lessons once a month, and hitting the range, my handicap was lower. The short game requires finesse and touch. This is difficult to be competent at unless you're playing much more regularly. Furthermore, you can go to the chipping green and nail 50 shots in a row. But, try do it from 3 inches of rough with money on the line and your boys all staring at you and it's a different story.

Toothpick or any fine tipped metal object. I always have a wet rag to wipe my club faces down while I'm playing.

I always use a tee between shots and wipe the face with a towel on the bag.

If you ever want to go long and straight (I mean 30 to 40 yards over your average) take the rules infraction approach and smear a layer of Vaseline on the clubface. Of course load your clubs up before reaching the first tee or even the course.
