College Football: 2009 Season Discussion Thread

It's spring and 2009 is underway! Beautiful day for tOSU annual Spring Game! The Buckeyes set a spring game national record for attendance with over 95k.

Ohio State's spring game draws record crowd of 95,722 - USATODAY.com

Ohio State's stadium filled to near capacity for the annual Buckeyes spring game.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) There was a lot of yardwork left undone in the Buckeye state on Saturday.

A national spring game record crowd of 95,722 came out to enjoy the high temperatures and watch Terrelle Pryor throw two long touchdown passes in 30 seconds, leading the Gray over the Scarlet 23-3 at sun-drenched Ohio Stadium.

"It's crazy ? CRAZY," tight end Jake Ballard said. "With the heat out there and they were out there sitting through it."

The 80-degree weather played a big role in the attendance, which topped the 92,138 Alabama drew for Nick Saban's coaching debut in 2007.

"First, kudos go out to our fans," coach Jim Tressel said. "It was a beautiful day, and gives you a little bit of electricity and a little energy and a little reminder of how much interest there is in Ohio State football."

Ohio fans paid $5 per ticket, with the bulk of the money going to local charities. Many showed up in tank tops and shorts to soak up the sun on the warmest day of the year while watching Pryor strut his stuff.

He broke open a close scrimmage with touchdown passes of 44 yards to Taurian Washington and 42 yards to Ray Small late in the second half. Pryor started as a freshman for last year's 10-3 Buckeyes team.

It has grated on him that doubters have questioned his ability to throw the ball accurately on medium and longer pass routes.

"We don't care about the critics and the analysts and people saying stuff about me," said Pryor, who retired after three quarters after completing 13-of-18 passes for 191 yards and the two scores. "That's not a big deal to me. I came out and showed I can throw the ball and that's what I wanted to do today."

Pryor, who a year ago was the nation's top quarterback recruit, completed 100 of his 165 passing attempts for 1,311 yards and 12 touchdowns with only four interceptions in his freshman season. But he seldom completed a pass of more than 10 or 15 yards, despite having a veteran group of receivers.

He has been motivated by those who question his arm strength.

"Terrelle wants to be a quarterback," tailback Dan "Boom" Herron said. "He doesn't want everybody to look at him as a runner or a scrambler. He wants to be a quarterback.

Interested to see how my OSU beavers do this year. We have been top 25 the last 4 years, and with both the Rodgers brothers healthy it should be an interesting season, not saying in any way we can compete with the big schools but we should make some waves in the pack 10. Fuck the ducks, go beavers!!

Kidding aside, UF has a good chance. Spikes and Tebow back--plus the entire defense. tOSU took some hits on defense and offensive skill positions. Getting past USC is the goal for the Buckeyes at the moment.

Florida will be tough this year and anything short of another MNC will be failure IMO. Too much talent returning from last year to not repeat. They should easily win the SEC East with Tennessee and UGA having a somewhat down year. The SEC West isn't that great this year either.

If Oklahoma can produce on offense they'll compete with Texas for the Big 12 title, but I don't know if either of those teams can stop Florida's offense. Muschamp had success at Auburn stopping Florida, so maybe he can do it again at Texas.

2009 predictions:
OU or Texas in the Title game this year, leaning towards Texas.
UF loses to LSU and/or FIU. Tebow Christ quits football to become a missionary. Urban Meyer doesn't know what do to without the Chosen One, calls QB sneaks every play and gets fired.

Ohio State pwns USC at the Shoe marches into the title game (a rematch of the Fiesta Bowl last year). Ohio State wins, World Peace ensues.

^Thought you might like that

It'll probably be Texas vs Florida in the Title game. But, thankfully, this will be the last great year for Florida for a while.

I assume you say that because Tebow will be gone? Urban Meyer had Alex Smith at Utah in 2004, and Smith's numbers were very similar to Tebow's from 2008. Florida also had more rushing yards last year than passing. I know Tebow is a focus of the defense, but he isn't the whole team.

Just like any school if Florida can find a backup to Tebow then they'll be fine. They have one of the most talent rich teams besides USC.

I am an Auburn fan so I really hope this is Florida's last great year

The national champ should come out of the SEC but not necessarily Florida or any other team. I see South Carolina throwing a monkey wrench in either UGA (close game pass several years), UT, or Florida. The SEC West has a bunch of wildcards too.

I can't wait until late August/early Sept. for football to start. We are mired in the middle of sports muck for the next couple of months. Everything is boring.

I think UK is in South Carolina land... each team will probably cover the spread, get the 7 wins, and may upset a Florida or LSU or Alabama.

Rule changes for 2009

The NCAA football rules committee has proposed several rule changes for 2009.[5] Before these rules are officially adopted, these proposals must be approved by the Playing Rules Oversight Panel. The rule changes include the following:
  • If the home team wears colored jerseys, the visiting team may also wear colored jerseys; so long as the two teams have agreed to do so.
  • If the punter carries the ball outside of the tackle box, he is no longer protected under the roughing the kicker penalty.
  • Deliberately grabbing the chin strap is now included as part of the face mask penalty.
  • The edge of the tackle box is defined as being 5 yards to the left and right of the snapper, rather than 2 parallel lines from the position of the offensive tackles.

Sounds like that soccer pooch punt may be limited.?? As far as jersey colors, could it be a Sgt. York play from the movie Leatherheads?
