The quote from Miami Herald's Greg Cote:
China was criticized for using a lip-syncer in the Opening Ceremonies because the girl actually singing wasn't deemed cute enough. The Chinese girl lip-syncing was 9. I believe she went on to win gold in the floor exercise.

Organizing committee slams media
Beijing - The executive vice president of the Beijing organizing committee and Games spokesman on Friday criticized the media for negative reporting. Wang Wei told a press briefing that there was a bias from some of the journalists.
He was reacting to negative questions directed at the organizing committee by journalists on human rights issues, internet censorship, pollution and the situation in Tibet.
"So many criticisms in this room just reflect how biased some of the media are about China, how little some of the media understand China."
He compared it with the reporting about the torch relay outside China, which focussed on demonstrations about the situation in Tibet, where Chinese officials had brutally clamped down on protests.
"History will show how correct the decision of the IOC was in 2001 in awarding the games to China."
Wang's statements came just a few hours after security officials detained two photographers from an international news agency and accused them of being part of a demonstration.

Tough break for the Canadian women in the XC race. Premont had to pull out and Pendrel just missed out on a podium spot. I think a podium finish will be tough for Kabush on the men's side with the likes of Absalon, Sauser, and Hermida, but it should still be entertaining to watch.

Has anyone heard about the Cuban kickboxer kicking the referee in the face after being disqualified?

A Cuban taekwondo athlete and his coach were banned for life after Angel Matos kicked the referee in the face following his bronze-medal match disqualification.
Cuban coach Leudis Gonzalez offered no apology for Matos’ actions during the men’s over-80 kg (176 pounds) match.
Matos was winning 3-2, with 1:02 in the second round, when he fell to the mat after being hit by his opponent, Kazakhstan’s Arman Chilmanov. He was sitting there, awaiting medical attention, when he was disqualified for taking too much injury time. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.
Matos angrily questioned the call, pushed a judge, then pushed and kicked referee Chakir Chelbat of Sweden. Matos then spat on the floor and was escorted out.

all work and no play
BEIJING (Aug. 23) - Cuba's Angel Matos deliberately kicked a referee square in the face after he was disqualified in a bronze-medal match, prompting the World Taekwondo Federation to recommend he be banned for life.
"We didn't expect anything like what you have witnessed to occur," said WTF secretary general Yang Jin-suk. "I am at a loss for words."

BEIJING (AP)—It turns out that the Greco-Roman wrestler who was stripped of his bronze medal for dropping it in disgust on the mat had reason for being angry, according to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Ara Abrahamian of Sweden complained to CAS that a penalty in the second round of his 84-kilogram bout on Aug. 14 against Italian Andrea Minguzzi wasn’t assessed until after the round ended. Once factored in, Abrahamian automatically lost the match. Minguzzi went on to win the gold medal.
Abrahamian’s coach was then denied a request for a video review, then the wrestling federation—the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, or FILA—refused to consider a protest.
The 28-year-old Abrahamian had to be restrained from going after matside officials following his loss to Minguzzi. He stormed away from the area where interviews are conducted and slammed a door to the dressing rooms.
After he was given his bronze during the medals ceremony, Abrahamian walked off the podium, went over to mat and dropped it in disgust and walked away. On Aug. 15, the International Olympic Committee disqualified Abrahamian and stripped his medal for violating the spirit of fair play during the medal ceremony.
The Armenian-born Abrahamian—who also lost a 2004 Olympic semifinal match on a disputed call—initially wanted judges in the bout tossed out and his medal restored. But in the end, he only wanted CAS to verify that the lack of an immediate appeals process is a loophole that needs to be fixed. It also was referred to as a violation of “the Olympic Charter and FILA’s own rules about fair play.”
Judges said Abrahamian was right.
“We limit ourselves to ruling that FILA must, consistently with the (Olympic) Charter and general principles of fairness, establish for the future a jury of appeal to determine the validity or otherwise of complaints of the kind ventilated by (Abrahamian),” the judges wrote.
Elsewhere in the 20-page ruling, judges noted several times that FILA did not appear at a hearing.

USA-Spain, poor officiating, but mostly poor defense. Spain brought their A+++ game. Kobe stepped up in the 4th, but he also made a lot of bad decisions.
