Track Day interest thread - Somewhere between Charlotte and Atlanta

I have been itching to do a track day now that I finally have my TSX back together. I have never done one before but it is definitely something I am interested in looking into. I am curious to see how many others would be intersted in this as well or possibly have been to one before. I am talking about a full track not just a drag strip.

How much do track days cost typically?

It really just depends on how HAM you go.

Low end = cost of fuel burned, brake pad/tire wear, and entry ($250 for hpde usually)

High end = the above + busted bumper or blown motor, or potential wrecked car lol.

But yeah it is normally at least about $250 plus whatever other costs you put into it. You also need a helmet but they have those to rent at most places. I plan to pickup one as I would like to start doing several of these a year. Also sometimes it is suggested to get different brake pads and change them out once you get to the track.

In.

BTW, most places won't let you run a motorcycle helmet, but as long as it meets SNELL requirements, you should be good (IOW, the $50 Bell at Walmart should suffice).

Let me know what date youre planning for this so I can get my parts in order.

you guys

Hoping in the coming weeks we can get at least like 10 people interested. Shawn the date probably won't be till after IA so as to try and gather more interest. I might try my first track day myself at Carolina Motorsports Park before that just to get an understanding of how everything works and such. I still need to get better at driving the TSX as well. I am get around in it just fine but I suck at pushing it hard

Awesome, that sounds good to me. Should give me enough time to get the motor in and get a decent tune on it before I track it. Not sure how far I'll get on suspension before then but idc. Drive it with all the body roll. Give me enough time I may be able to get a few of the guys here in Columbia interested in some track time too.

Just got my 1st batch of shipments. motor mounts, block off plates, Walbro 485 fuel pump, eBay FMIC. Still waiting on some more goodies.

Track days are just for fun. There is no competition other than you against your own lap times. It is primarily for improving your own driving skills.

I am not sure of all the tracks in the area but the two main I can think of are Carolina Motorsports Park (CMP) and Road Atlanta. CMP has a at least 2-3 track days every month. Road Atlanta being a much more professionally used race track has a lot fewer choices as far as dates and might even cost more but I have not looked into that yet at all.

I am in the process of currently making sure my TSX meets the sounds requirements for both tracks right now so I need to find someone with access to a sound meter. CMP is 105db at 50ft away. I haven't found the sound level for Road Atlanta yet.

I think a good weekend to go will be when Will goes to CMP with his s2000. Kyle is going to shoot it down there.

And what weekend would that be? My calendar keeps filling up right now. I want to try and get one done in the spring and then another mid to late summer.

I was going to suggest CMP as well. Full track for those who want... kart track with rentals for those who just want to come hang. Little something for everyone.

About 1.5 hours from Charlotte, and 3 or so from Atlanta. More "casual" then Road Atlanta, so likely more accessible...

^ I do not. The FJ with off-road tires would be a bear to handle . But I may stop by depending on the date. I may even setup a test day with a bunch of racers if it's an off weekend. That way I can be a little productive, and hang out at the same time

Hopefully this time next year I will have my toy in the garage. We'll see b/c we have been looking at beach properties as well... so who knows.

Ok so I am bringing this back up as I am starting to think about it more and more now about wanting to get in one or two events at the track before the year is done.

I looked up some dates that have open track days with Drivers Ed at Carolina Motorsports Park. The reason I mention Drivers Ed is you must go a day with an instructor before they are willing to let you lose on the track by yourself. For those dates you must schedule at least 2 weeks in advance if you want to be sure they have instructors on hand for you. You can call later than that but there is no guarantee.

Dates which are available over the next 3 months are listed below.

June 14th - Sat
June 22nd - Sat
June 23rd - Sun
July 20th - Sat
July 21st - Sun
Aug 24th - Sat
Aug 25th - Sun

To participate you must get a pre-event checklist complete by an automotive shop I believe. The checklist is provided on the Carolina Motosports site. http://www.carolinamotorsportspark.com/documents.html

Price for track day for Drivers Ed is $280 for 1 day and $460 for 2 days.
Prices for track day solo once you have completed Drivers ed is $230 for 1 day and $360 for 2 days.

You can rent helmets for $10 for 1 day or $20 for 2 days on site as they are required or you can buy your own ahead of time if you know it is something you definitely want to keep doing.

I have never done this before but I will try and answer any questions that I might be able to.

I am not sure if we can get a group rate or anything. I know that the Tarheels Sports Car Club organizes events sometimes and one of the reasons I want to try and get one done soon is that they have an event at VIR I want to maybe go too in September.

On an off note, sound requirements at a RACE track are completely insane, ridiculous, asinine, etc...

Wait! What! I couldn't find any sound requirements for CMP. Are there some I need to know about cause the TSX is pretty crazy loud. I wonder how I can measure the car.

They mention noise regulations on their FAQ page, but do not indicate what they are:

http://www.carolinamotorsportspark.com/faq.html

You might try giving them a call.

That's some pricey racing. + a set of tires and possibly warped rotors.

I pay $7 for test n tune day at the drag strip.
and theres plenty of people to race and you can be as loud as you want.

When is there going to be a drag day ?

But you can only go in a straight line for a few seconds at a time

I will eventually get the F to the strip and later the TSX once I can get good at launches but for now I really want to hit up a different type of track than that. Plus for most people they don't have cars that are very fast in a straight line. We all know Acuras are not known for that. However, they normally handle pretty well and it can be a help to anyone's driving skill.

There are some INSANELY loud cars on CMP's track. I've seen them on race days, and some are full-fledged race cars which are multiple times louder then any street car. You should be fine.

If in doubt, just call the track and ask them... but you should be good.

Right now I am either June 23rd a Sunday after I work all day Saturday is what I am shooting for but probably won't be ready for it either. Mainly shooting for it so I can be ready for the weekend in July for sure.
