Acura is back!
With 16 months to go on my TLX lease, I should be timed right for a ‘20 model. Assuming the ‘20 is the inaugural 2G TLX, I hope the Type S is in production. However, if they plan on extending the 1G to a 6th model year, then I will also look at other makes... possibly Infiniti.
A V6 is what you have now. Its a N/A naturally asperated (no boost) engine & its dead in ACURAS future plans. The V6T is a Turbo Boosted engine. People at the ACURA level that want a up to date N/A need to look at Camry & Avalon. They will have N/A engines for a while yet.
Everybody else is phasing them out.
Everybody else is phasing them out.
Yes, but a V6T, without the T would be a piece of shit. Why? Because any turbo engine is generally a lower compression engine as compared to an NA counterpart, in part due to it being easier to tune them for safe use and reliability. You can have a high compression turbo engine... but your tune must be much more dialled in, or goodbye engine.
So yes, while it is still technically a V6, they are worlds apart from one another. its akin to saying a Ferrari is a car, just like a Dodge Caravan. While true, they are worlds apart.

Additionally if the scuttlebutt is correct it will not even look like the current engine. The Rumor Mill has it as a smaller displacement 4 cam turbo charged engine with a different V angle then it has now. It HONDA pulls it off it should be a great runner. Way better then just plunking a turbo on the current engine.
I don't know why people even discuss the scenario of adding a turbo to the current engine when I published a few days ago in the ILX thread a link to Honda's 2017 patent for a new V6T,
I don't care about the Type S. Hopefully the V6T won't add much more than $1500 like for the Q50 3.0T, once inflation adjusted.

Just got an email from Car & Driver with the must see pictures from the Detroit Auto Show. First picture out of the box was the RDX. Also a nice FORD Mustang BULLITT 50th Anniversary car & an Infiniti Q concept

What does the ILX have anything to do with the V6T? And yeah... I wouldn't expect that V6T to be in anything besides the Type S. Unless of course the baby NSX comes out. Or the next RLX. Or the next MDX.
Here's a pretty good video showing how the new infotainment system works:

Maybe some of the bitching as opposed to docile acceptance of the status quo helped.

Love it. Tacked on top of the dash just like the German cars. Actually its the smartest place to put it with a touch screen so you don't have to look down to use it. ACURA is really starting to move to the current state of the automotive art.

Ergonomically, I still like my middle of the dash touch screen, but the new technology is certainly next generation.

I've been all over the 2019 RDX Prototype reveal as well. A lot of people missed the key points that CEO of NA Honda made about the direction of the Acura brand. I've been hanging out in the RDX forums for the past few days because of this. I noticed someone on Acura's Facebook page said the following information that sounds intriguing, but I dont know the accuracy of it:
Patrick Redden This is how it will be laid out folks for the next generation of Acura's. The 2019 RDX is the first Acura to be designed from the ground up under the Precision Crafted Performance brand philosophy:
-3.0L turbo
- 60 Degree layout
- DOHC/chain driven
- Full Continuous VTEC (all new VTEC system)
- Hybrid Turbo System (eCharger and Turbocharger)
- Every model with new 3.0t will be mild (48V) Hybrid (TLX-S, RDX-S, base MDX and base RLX) or full Sport Hybrid which will be used on the top levels of the MDX and RLX.
Next gen RLX 3.0t standard engine with an optional Sport Hybrid SH-AWD trim.
Next gen MDX 3.0t standard engine with an optional Sport Hybrid SH-AWD trim.
Next gen TLX 2.0t as a base and optional 3.0t engine (Type-S).
Next gen RDX 2.0t as a base and optional 3.0t engine (Type-S)
All A-Spec'd vehicles will be only available on the base engine as A-Spec is only a Sport appearance and sport tuned suspension package.
All 2.0t engines will be mated to a 10AT. All 3.0t engines will be mated to an all new 11 speed triple clutch automatic.

Semi truck transmissions? All in the name of fuel economy!!
But.. 11 speeds (or even the new 10 speed AT) allow for much shorter gears, which means the vehicles will be able to accelerate at a good clip. The shorter the gears, the lower the top speed each can hit, but the faster they can hit those speeds.
I see no word about a 6MT. Figures. It breaks my heart, but alas, it's gone the way of the dinosaur.

There was a patent filed by Honda back in December regarding a turbocharged V6 unit. Based on the patent, it'll retain the same 60 deg V angle as the J-series but with dual overhead cam verses the single overhead cam we have now. With their recent development experience with the J-series, it will be interesting to see Honda go back to the 90 deg V like the old C series engines from the NSX, but hey...who knows.

This is a 90* 5.0 OVH engine & its 90* 5.0 DOHC sibling.
Engine on the left is a 90* 302CI 5.0L DOHC 32 Valve engine. Engine on the right is a 90* 302CI 5.0L Single cam 16 Valve engine.
Off Topic sort of an interesting note. MB is going to DOHC I6 to replace its current V6 engines in new models.

It doesn't look like the new RDX display is a touch screen. I understand BMW has moved to both a touch screen and the usual Idrive control in some models. Dare I say the new Acura 1-1 touch pad is safer and perhaps superior?
Ergonomically, I still like my middle of the dash touch screen, but the new technology is certainly next generation.

I am just not interested in having to reach out to make inputs. I had the same display on my 2014 in a non-touch screen version.
My preference is the rotary dial on the console, sill functional no look required, also with voice (something else I don't use). The top face of the dial also acts as a written input interface another useless tech trick unless you are parked. The dial is surrounded by 5 buttons that gives direct access to most things you need while moving like map display etc.

Don't know who this guy is but one thing could make sense. A-Spec for the 2.0 as a handing & trim package like M-Sport on a 330. The TypeS would include all of the A-Spec items + the 3.0T & whatever additional upgrades the put in it.
Assuming a 6 years life for the platform, either they rush to implement these powertrains for the last 2 years 2019 2020, or it will happen as a 2021 on the next one. If it is a 5 years run (like gen 2), this would be ALL new in a 2020.
Somebody (at least in Ohio) already knows the answer as 2020 is like tomorrow.

They don't have to develop the transmission from scratch- but they need to make it fit and do crash safety testing, emissions testing, meeting CAFE standards, blah blah blah. I'm hoping they see value in it. Honestly, we should start bombarding Acura with letters of "we want a 6MT!!" It might actually get us somewhere. The squeaky wheel gets the grease... and it looks like they listened to us with regards to the new RDX and MMC TLX (as much as they could).
I don't understand the point of a triple clutch setup, as mentioned, in the new 11 speed transmission. What's the 3rd clutch for?
