yumcha, you haven't seen the curved tvs yet? I think they've been around for a couple years now. They seem to have lots of positives, but also lots of negatives. Anyway, for the Samsung I was looking at, it was a 200 dollar upgrade to go from flat to curved. Not the end of the world. Ultimately, I think I will opt out and stick with the flat screen (thanks Kurt!). It seems sports viewing is better done on a flat screen.

I'm also considering the Sony XBR65X900E, or maybe cheap out and go Vizio? They actually have a nice TV that goes for the same price as the Sony, available at Costco. So not that cheap. Hmmm...

I don't really follow high-def TVs too closely...just generally only pay attention when I'm buying. But yeah, I'm quite aware of the curved TVs...

As I said, I'm looking to purchase a new screen come Boxing Day-ish this year. We'll see how low prices go but my BiL also has a membership with DirectBuy.

is directbuy worth it? I've heard of some people being part of it. Never looked into it any more than that, though.

Ehhh...IMO, no.

Not unless you are regularly buying a large number of home improvement-type supplies, furnitures, and etc.

My BiL got into it when he was in a string of house-flipping and buying stuff routinely but now that the economy has tanked a bit, he's letting his membership run out...TBH, I have yet to buy anything from DirectBuy with his membership since he's been with them for 5+ years. Don't think it's worth it and the website is absolutely a beast to use.

But...the OLED TV I'm after may likely go from DirectBuy. I think it's $1000ish less than Best Buy's price?

I think one of my tv's is still plasma and smart and stuff...3D and all. Pretty cool features.
I think it has a nice image.
I think most stuff is overkill. It's a Samsung.

Vizio supposedly makes a quality product too.

I don't like them. I wouldn't mind one as a monitor or serious gaming screen, but as a main tv.. It's a gimmick. I have people over frequently and it's not great unless you're right in front of it. It also seems smaller, plus I wasn't super impressed by them. I didn't feel like it immersed you much more. I have a 75" Sony. Bigger is better.

Good to know...

What's the issue? Isn't it just the next gen to LED...? I was just keeping up with the times.

Curved TVs are like curved dicks. It's alright if that's what you've got, but I'm not a big fan of looking at them. Nor would I want one myself.

Gimmick. Like midget porn.

Go with the tried and true. Flat TVs and huge black cocks in tight white pussies.

Co-worker of mine bought one a couple years back on BBC Friday. He likes it and I grin and nod when he talks about it, but I'm really thinking about hardcore banging how he could have gotten a better set for less.

Thanks for the info, gents. I have definitely kept all of that in mind and narrowed it down to 3 TVs. Im currently rocking a 56" and looking to go to 65". I'd like to go bigger and have a big enough wall to put one on, but I'm scared it will be too big for the room

no, but really, how far do you sit from your 75, maj? I'm only 11 feet from the screen.

edit: according to this, I should be ok with a 75. Hmmmm...

Reliability.. My bro says he gets a lot of complaints about them. It's not necessarily an advancement / next-gen type thing. There are definite pros and cons. The industry has pumped some serious money to get it where it is now, which is promising, but there are inherent issues driving oled displays that make it more con than pro for me. It's a sharp looking picture for sure. Better in some respects to the high end plasmas. But led lcds are so good and cheap and relatively problem free.

Sh*t...you know what? I apologize...I think I MEANT QLED and NOT OLED.

See, goes to show I'm not really keeping up on this. They change so often...

And QLED goes for under $3K for 55": https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product...10583532.aspx?

Not bad. I believe this was what I was looking at when I was talking about DirectBuy. It's about $1000 less on their site.

Sorry Maj...I had meant QLED. I got it confused with OLED.

Does QLED screens have issues as well per your brother?

LED 1080p

I bought my current tv almost 4 years ago.
4K was out then, but not much media and certainly no stream was in 4K.
Also.. all the sammy 4K TVs and some others were 4K but the HDMI ports were 1.4 that didn't support 4K
So yeah, choice was easy.

Yeah, that's about the age of my LED Sammy as well. 1080p...high refresh rate, if I recall.

But, now that I have a finished basement, I need something for down there. The DLP (yes, that's right) I bought over 10 years ago is a bit...aged.

My homie bought curved when it first came out. Fuck all that shit. If you want curved, you need to go biggest possible. 65 curved is lame. I’m still fucking with my 48” Samsung from 2006 in my bedroom and got the 65” Samsung in living room. My pops has a 75” but will be upgrading soon so I’ll take his 75” for the living room.

Snag one on cyber Monday, if canaduh gets that!

Fuck... that feeling when you something unexpected happens, so you go to fix it, then to find out the new part you bought don’t work, so you want to go back to the store at 10 at night to finish said project. But, the store closes at 10 so now you have to wait till Sunday, but, then it’s daylight savings so you lose an hour.

Fuck

Well, the house we built already had the basement finished as per requirements. However, I'm in the process of building custom cabinets/shelving for my hoarding ways (robots). I can post some pics later on, sure.

The TV I have currently in the family room (52" I believe LED SmartTV a la Sammy) will head down there with the DLP being donated. The setup will be basic...just a soundbar and my "retro" videogame consoles to play on it. It's sorta a "geek cave".

@Flip
Shiett mang, that's why I always overprepare
Like today... needed a new 15A 3-way switch
Buy 2.. replace other one too, might as well
Then... well.. who knows what's fucked.. wire crimps, connectors, vinyl tape..

Sure enough.. whole setup was fucked.
Needed to split line, crimp, twist these pair (balls), tape
Other switch looked fine, but fuck that.. crazy ass shit..
Let me upload pics.

not all TVs are created equal. Just because it says 65" 4K UHD TV, doesn't make it comparable to all other 65" 4K UHD TVs. Ultimately, you get what you pay for. I'm not saying the TV lowes is advertising is bad. But compare model numbers around to ensure you're actually getting a good deal, and not an entry level 65" TV that they're just trying to get rid of because no one else bought it.

here's the kicker though- 99% of people would never notice a "bad" TV, unless there was a good one right next to it. It's generally only then where you start to appreciate the finer nuances of the more expensive product. Hell, I feel my 56", 6 year old Samsung has an amazing picture quality stil. but wtf am I comparing it to, besides absolutely nothing? So then I wonder... is it worth splurging to actually get the better picture quality?

Fuck. I've just come full circle and have no idea what to do

Do not buy a new television without High-Dynamic-Range (HDR). Make sure you know it's HDR because that's a much bigger deal than 4K.

Isn't that a gimmick, too? Doesn't it make the images unnecessarily bright and colourful? I mean, comparing HDR photos to regular ones, the HDR pics look great but makes the images look way over the top.

Lowes don’t sell electronics.... so I have no idea why the hell they are selling one for Black Friday. Maybe some Sears/Kmart rejects...
