AMG vehicles used to impress me, not so much any more. It has become so watered down throughout the MBZ line (a la the M division as well) I need something different to be excite me.
i can't agree more with this statement... AMG used to differentiate the performance line... now you can get an AMG in every model they offer... i mean c'mon a CLA AMG??? give me a f'king break!!! i was on board with the C63 AMG cramming the huge motor into a small car... but once they started producing multiple variants of the motor just so they could brand it an AMG, it pushed me over the edge...

Isn't that the same with "M"...?
I always considered Alpina to be more like Brabus is to Mercedes.
yes same with M... c'mon an M2??? BMW you gone dumb...
i'm sure it's their marketing dept saying it drives more sales... all manufacturers are doing it... MB with an AMG package... but it isn't an AMG... Lexus with F-Sport package, but it isn't an IS-F...

Audi has shown a bit more restraint, I'd say. They keep it simpler with the RS line.

+1
To me I am not bothered by a CLA45 AMG. Reason being, AMG has always been about putting a lot of power and that model does that when compared to a CLA250.
We went to test drive a Cabriolet C300 yesterday for the wife. They also had a C43 AMG there, which we drove. TO ME, that C43 bothers me. The C63 AMG makes sense in the cabriolet, as does the C300 base. But to dilute the name with a C43AMG (which is not a full blown amg), doesn't make sense to me.
HOWEVER, per the sales person, inventory, the C43AMG Cabrio is selling. Locally from what I was offered for the wife, I could get a C300 Cabriolet, Red interior, Sports Package, for only $7,000 less than the C43AMG. So in the market the C43 AMG is filling a niche. I am just a old person and a luddite and think C63 as the pure AMG, and the C43 as the poseur AMG. Then again my wife really liked the C43, so what do I know
If you look at the C43 AMG vs C300, there is hardly any noticeable difference, which is beyond me. If I get a sports package on the C300, aside from the rear pipes, you can't even tell. That isn't cool. AMG should be different.
Though the bigger problem, I think is that the S and C and E looking so similar. It isn't a problem for me, when I buy a C. But think of the guy buying the S, and his Cabrio/Coupe has such similarities with the C.

IDK, an M2 is a true driver's car and a little screamer. It is probably better suited for the "M" treatment than a 6 which is a big, heavy car.
As long as it's a serious performance competitor in its class, I think it's fine putting M in front of a BMW or AMG at the end of a Merc. So M2 and C63 are worth it IMO.
Benz's new x43 AMGs aren't far enough removed from the regular lineup to maintain AMG's cachet, IMO. Now it's only the numerical digits that matter.
Riding in a twin turbo V12, accelerating from 60-120+ in just a few seconds with the utmost of smoothness is otherworldly. It's so serene that it's scary. The torque is instantaneous and omnipresent.

Agreed with this. As long as the AMG badge is on something that AMG tuned to make it stand out, I'm fine with it. CLA45 AMG has the worlds most powerful 4-cylinder... perfect. That's exactly what AMG does. Even the C43 which is a minimal bump over the C400 is technically still a bump, so I'm good with that. And if you've ever been in a C43 over a regular C-Class, it's a completely different experience which is what AMG should provide... and does. I actually think these more entry-level AMGs are good for the brands b/c it gives people a taste of what AMG can do over the base models, then when those folks decide to upgrade, they won't hesitate to look at the bigger V8 AMG models. Same for BMW and Audi.
What I don't like are the packages. M-Sport, AMG-Sport, and S-Line. I am not a fan of those sport packages carrying the same name (or a similar variation of it) as the upgraded models. They should just simply be "sport" packages and that's that. I think that is where the dilution comes into play b/c many buyers do not know the difference, so John or Mary with the C300 that has the AMG sport package thinks they have an AMG, and that is where I think the brand takes a hit.
"M-Sport" to BMW is a partial step to "M" status for my 650. It's got bigger brakes, a different exhaust, different spring rates, larger wheels, a nicer steering wheel, and a modified front air dam for starters. It's definitely a better looking and handling car than a non-M 650 and not as balls to the wall as the M6. My 650 is plenty fast enough and stops very well for a large car.

BMW has done a good job revamping their "M-Sport". I still think it causes confusion with the general public and can be named better, but at least it's more than just pretty wheels and some spoilers.

Agree 100%. Entry level AMG is good for the brand, from a profit stand point. The "43" are called "AMG ENHANCED," whereas the "63" are truly "handmade by AMG" per their marketing speak.
I don't know about the C sedan, but the drive in the C300 vs C43 Cabriolet we posted above, was completely different. I think the wife is leaning towards the C43, because in real world, price difference is coming out to $7,100 when optioned the same and the drive/platform seemed much more engaging in our 45min drive of each.
car and driver
i8
Zero to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and 12.4 seconds in the quarter-mile confirm that BMW is earnest in its sports-car intentions. Hold the pedal down and the i8’s little-engine-that-can revs to 6000 rpm through the first five gears to a governed 155-mph top speed in sixth.
b7
Here is enough power to rank the B7 as the quickest dealership-sold BMW we’ve ever tested, with 60 mph arriving in 3.4 seconds and the quarter-mile smoked like a robusto at the end of a Dyson vacuum: 11.6 seconds at 122 mph.
And with a retune from Dinan or another company, the B7's are even moreso of monsters. I'd imagine the new 760 to be in the same range as the B7 performance wise.

Do people actually buy a B7 and then get a retune from Dinan?
Given that BMW's continue to offer one of the few AWD sedans still available with 3 pedals, I've already decided the 4 series x-drive will be my next ride. Ugh....my way of driving for the past 20 years is going the way of the dinosaurs.
My wife won't buy an automatic-her last 2 BMW's have been 6 speed manual 3 series cars, a 330xi and a 335xi, both sedans. She has a sticker on the rear driver's side door window that says "Save the Stick!"
Probably another 3 series, it's the perfect size for her and she is a "car chick" through and through able to heel/toe, threshold brake, etc., damn good driver. I'm trying to talk her into an Alfa Romeo Giulia or an M3
I don’t know enough about the Giula. They are pretty and as you know like the F pace they are all over especially with the dirt cheap lease deal. I just thought they were AT only
I am sure Someone will correct me
we have no use for a sedan , so I don’t really follow

Wow, I think you are completely missing the point of a proper FR-layout car. The only thing BMW and every other luxury brand are guilty of is making larger and larger cars (3 is as big as an old 5, 5 to 7, 7 = a limo now?...) The 2-series is a return to original M-roots.

Agreed per above.

The 4-series is a two door boat (except for the M4 which has great proportions). The only thing I love about the 4-series is that it weeds out people from buying a 2-series. I literally see 10 or more 4-series for every one 2-series sighting.

M-sport is a very noticeable upgrade for many of the reasons you describe. I'd love to own an M2, but I also agree that the non-M cars are plenty fast for the road...yes, including the turbo-4.
Don't know about the Alpina, but I checked out the M760Li at a BMW event and the interior materials were outstanding. I liked it more than the A8 and S550 from the auto show.
