So I know what my next car will be . . . .

An Alpina B7. I've been driving a 740 for the last 8 days while my car is at the dealer getting some routine maintenance done (no I don't care it's been 8 days as I have a $100K loaner car!). I've always liked the Alpina cars and like not seeing my chosen car on every street I travel on. I can totally see me and the whiff driving to our home in Sarasota for extended stays in one of these babies.

I think I've seen two of those in the wild before. Both in that dark blue of the second picture you posted. I would never drive one, as a poor, but I certainly enjoy seeing one from time to time.

I hope you and your whiff enjoy it, it's a rare beast indeed!

The thread title triggered me, in fear of another teaser post. At least you salvaged it with pictures!

Truth be told I'm not too familiar with the Alpinas. I've seen them around, but now that I've read up on them they sound impressive.

Such gorgeous cars. Would love to own one one day. I think a Car Talk regular has one of a previous generation.

So that's how they get people to look the other way when routine maintenance takes 8 days.

I really like that green color in the first photo, but overall not my cup of tea. I'll stick to 2-door BMW's / Alpina's

me too dallison, been a fan of Alpinas for at least 30 years having seen them at the Glen and then reading up on them to understand just what they are. I don't know how anyone who likes BMW's can dislike an Alpina since most of them can smoke an M car.

I was sitting in some waiting room somewhere earlier in the year and read this article comparing the M6 and B6. I found it interesting and maybe will someone else who isn't as familiar with Alpina vs. M.

There is a M760Li with red leather interior in my office Parking lot. I am curious how the Alpina B7 and that fares back to back

personally I prefer the B7. It’s a complete package with some level of exclusivity here in the USA

but a back to back comparo would be good to read.

B7-600 bhp V8 vs. M760 600 bhp V12 and a comparo I read and can't find now gave the nod to the B7 because of its superior cornering abilities and .5 second lead in 0-60 as tested (3.3 vs. 3.9). It's quite a bit less expensive, nicer interior and exterior in my opinion; besides, it's exclusive and not seen everywhere (anywhere?). The B7 is the blue car below:

I prefer the B7, and being cheaper is nice. Cheaper things usually aren't always exclusive, so this is a nice change of pace.
Then again I have seen only one M760Li, so it isn't like they are everywhere. Its just that they look too similar to the standard series 7, whereas the Alpina stands out a bit more

I want to see the 5-60 times instead of the irrelevant numbers shown. I bet that 5.0Toy is nowhere near as fast as you think.

"irrelevant?" How is a standing start vs. a rolling start which to me is not real world, irrelevant?

Sorry, you must not be current on the state of the Saintor art.

Would you believe that the V-8 has the exact same engine note as a 1997 Buick Roadmaster?

The alpina wheels look waaaay nicer than the 760 wheels

But overall, I can't stand the blue BMW uses on their brake calipers. I think it's an awful color and takes away from otherwise nice cars. Bleh.

on the 21" Alpina wheels, the valve stem is hidden behind the center cap, not on the 20" though.

Lose the chrome on the B7 for the black on the M7 & it's a winner.

But... AMG S-Class > BMW

No doubt about the AMG S class as amazing torque monsters. But around here AMG S class are dime a dozen. Only see a few B7 around

Interestingly, as "desired" as AMG is around the world, if you look at the G waggen world, there are TONS Of AMG G waggens, and the G550 tends to be a rare beast....

AMG vehicles used to impress me, not so much any more. It has become so watered down throughout the MBZ line (a la the M division as well) I need something different to be excite me.

The above is true, I don't remember the last time I saw a non-AMG G-wagen.

And with the companies upping the power on the standard cars, it's blurring the lines to the performance line, to an extent. Especially when a lot of the AMG/M line parts/features are available on the standard cars.

TBH, that's because the B7 is not "really" a BMW and therefore most people don't know what it is or that it even exists. The minute they finally make a M7 you'll see them everywhere just like the S63/S65.

As much as I like the B7, I still like the S63 more. It just makes a far bigger statement IMO than the B7 does.

Fun fact, the G is the only model that sells more AMG than non-AMG units.

No disagreements with you.

S65AMG has presence.

To me the people who KNOW, know what a B7 is, and therein lies the charm.

Whereas most S63/S65 AMG owners I know, don't care, they went in and just leased the most powerful one. Thus the B7 is a little bit more special (to me). When they make the M7, will they be everywhere as you said, I am sure you are right. But just like the M6 and B6 being sold next to each other, for most people the M might have the more cache, but I personally prefer the Alpina cars.

Just like S8 or RS7 used to be cool, but when you see them everywhere, they lose their luster.

Similarly, I will turn and look at a G550 twice, and not even care about a AMG G waggen. Now the other day I saw a 4x4squared. Now THAT was cool (to me).

^ completely agree, was just making a statement. Alpina is cool AF but there are reasons you don't see many of them and those reasons are marketing and rap videos.

On the AMG side, you've got the likes of groups like Brabus, which is maybe more of an Alpina comparison than just AMG.

To me Brabus is more of a tuner, and Alpina is more of a coach builder/manufacturer.

Alpina D3 has been very successful as well.
