Check your tire pressure

Well folks, it's that time of year again; overnight our OAT dropped to near freezing for the first time this fall, and sure enough, when I got in my car this morning I had a TPMS message. I checked all four tires and they were all between 28.5 and 29.5 PSI; I put them all up to 36.

Cold temperature should bet set to whatever is in your door jamb (or whatever you're comfortable with )

Thanks for the reminder !

This is a good reminder especially for those without tpms. The temperature dropped around here yesterday (and by dropped I mean it went from really hot to about seasonal) which made my tire pressure a little low. So I decided to pump them up and actually try to get them all the same. I really hate KPA and wish it could be switched to psi. Anyways after pumping them up and 5 minutes of letting air out little by little.... success. Although I was aiming for 250.

Some of us simply run the winter stuff year-round.

Yeah, my TPMS fired up on Monday when my PSI dropped to 27. Filled them back to 33 since we're likely to get temps down in the 20's.

I'm headed to Discount Tire to get a set of Conti WinterContact SI's within the next month.

Also, don't forget good windshield wipers. I always replace mine before winter. Money well spent IMO.

When I live in CT, I always used -32F washer fluid through out the whole year.

I use the 32F+ Walmart Supertech bug-formula in the summer. Surprisingly, despite being a Walmart brand, it works considerably better than normal washer fluid for bugs. But come September it's back to the 0F+. We rarely get below 0F in Utah.

I use the TPMS on the wife's vehicle as the reminder to check the tires on my '05.

Hmmm the winter wash i use doesnt do anything to the bugs in the summer.... Summer wash works better around here, at least in my experience.

I guess you need to come up here to New England; the bugs are nice and big but need something with antifreeze in it to wash them off.

shoez - temps dropped pretty low overnight here (roughly 75 miles from you) too, but isn't 36 psi cold ambient temp a little high seeing the temps are climbing into the 60s/70s in the afternoons? Supposed to be in the upper 70s on Sunday, no?
My bigger concern is when to change over to my winter shoes. Pilot Super Sports aren't happy is near freezing temps and absolutely hate the white stuff....................

Could be 36 is too high; I haven't had a chance to play around with pressures yet for the TL. I chose 36 because that was the pressure my 2001 Accord seems to be the most happy with and I didn't have the time to look up what the recommended pressure is for the TL.

The above said, for today at least (temps maxed out at about sixty), the car felt great.

You guys are making long for Jersey. We've been on vacation in Florida and can't wait until we get back to Jersey to be
able to say the temps have fallen and are near freezing. Been down here for 3 weeks and 95% of the time it's been in the
90's with high humidity, and you could say that we're melting when out during the day. Talk about bugs, the front has been covered with bugs. No need to check the tire pressures yet, but will probably pump them up on the way home, especially with all the weight, lower expected temps, and the constant 80mph speed. Not the TL though as that's home in the garage, so just using the 280,000 mile '08 Kia. Probably last trip for the car as I just purchased a Turbo Optima that I will pick up after I get home and probably say goodbye to the '08 Kia. Might try and talk the wife into getting rid of the TL as the Kia has every imaginable option and I certainly don't need all the options on an everyday "knock-around" car. We'll see.

Back on topic, thanks for the heads up as many neglect the tires/pressure along with lack of brake fluid changes.
Watch out for the ice that's coming.

Here in Clover, SC and temp got down to 24 the other night. I have a compressor ang a gage, but just found an Exxon station nearby that has a pump plus gage, and best of all it's FREE !!! BTW my 04 TL manual says 32 psi F & R. B

Interesting, my manual says nothing of the sort; what it does say is:
  • Normal Driving (Automatic equipped models): 33 psi Front / 32 psi Rear
  • Normal Driving (Manual equipped models): 35 psi Front / 32 psi Rear
  • High Speed Driving (all models): 39 psi Front / 35 psi Rear
FWIW, after some experimentation, I've gravitated to 40 psi front and 37 psi rear; the car handles curves and transients much better than other pressures.

Shoez, that's what mine says, plus those manual and high speed specs you mentioned. That 40 & 37 psi, I think would translate to a rougher ride for me, but understand what your saying about better handling. You must have a manual tranny? What year ? I have an AT.
