Yes, I searched. I didn't get the exact answers I was looking for though. So, like everyone else, I want to get rid of my ugly running lights. I was thinking about just getting some Silver Stars and popping those in because it's the exact color I want in a high beam and daytime running light.... BUT.... Would they be the same desired color ( white-ish ) when just on DRL's? I understand the voltage drops for the daytime... I would hate for them to dull out like they are currently. If they will stay white on DRL andddddd high beam, then I'm just going to do it. I figure it wont throw any weird codes because the bulbs would be to OEM spec.
The LED set up's seem excessive with the resistors and extra wires to keep the sensors happy, etc. I just want plug and play, oem style.
Final goal ::: white light with DRL and high beam with no dash warnings.
Sounds like a great plan.... whether or not it is possible is another story. I was in the exact same position, hating the yellowish stock daytime running lights. I didn't think bulbs like silver stars would be white enough. So I went with LED. They are really easy plug and play without throwing any codes and cost me I think about $45. After looking up the install in the internet it took me maybe 20 minutes to put in. Thing is that they don't have a high beam.... but if your headlights and fog lights are working properly then they should provide more than enough light. I think they look pretty sweet for daytime. So I decided to go with LED and haven't regretted it for a moment.
I installed the following on my car (SYLVANIA 9005 SilverStar zXe High Performance Halogen Headlight Bulb) and they are still a bit yellowish when in DRL mode. When in HI beam, it appears to be more 'whiter'. IMHO, the only way to get a white looking bulb is to go LED.
If there is another SilverStar that is better - > please share!
I went with these ones (made in the USA) recently...
Putco 289005 (9005 DRL) - > includes flicker module but probably not needed. I got it just in case.
Putco 280011 (H11 FOG) - > includes flicker module but probably not needed. I got it just in case.
It is plug and play with a small box to resist the voltage because LEDs use less power than Halogens.
To summarize the CM DEAL post:
1. Try to get a weave heat sink. There are no moving parts to breakdown.
2. Have a 7.5 fuse just in case there is a problem with the DRL not working later. NOTE: If you have the parking brake on, the DRL will be off when you start the car.
3. LEDs are the way to go. The technology has changed a lot in the last 3-5 years. They are much now much brighter than the halogens. Don't buy cheap ones, you pay for what you get.
4. DRL in low and high beam is still pretty bright compared to halogens.
5. www.vleds.com's 9005 with weave heat sink appears to not be sold anymore. (CM DEAL post)
Thanks for the feedback! I'll just grab some silverstars and see how they do. At least my high beams will be whiter at worst I guess. I live in Kentucky and sometimes need a good high beam on the back roads. Might do LED later.
