Smile Timing Belt Pricing

I'm trying to gauge timing belt pricing quotes for reasonableness.

I did call Acura, and they gave me the hilariously laughable quote of $1,800 for Timing Belt, Water pump, and Spark Plugs. I called a local Honda Dealership and they seemed very reasonable at $559 for Timing Belt and Water pump. I might try to do spark plugs myself, but those rear 3 seem like a pain.

Since this was so low I wondered if it was worth shopping around at a local shop or if that sounds fair. I sort of like the idea of going to a Honda dealer since these guys work on Hondas all day long.

Thoughts? Thanks for any input.

Not bad price from the honda dealer. Mind me asking where is the honda dealer location? Hopefully near me and I can get that price too

+1 at $559. Spark plugs is pretty easy, the 3 in the rear is a pain in the rear but doable.

$559 is really, really low. Here's why:

Parts
AISIN TKH002 Timing Belt Kit $175.00 (Rock Auto)
2 Gallons Honda Coolant $36.00

So let's say $211 parts cost, plus shipping for Rock Auto gets you to $220.

Labor
That leaves $339 for labor. If the shop has a $75/hour labor rate, that's 4.5 hours labor.

All that to say, I would expect the $559 doesn't include tax, shop supplies, etc.

Spark Plugs
The NGK plugs are $8.59 + shipping at Rock Auto. Rear ones aren't bad, provided you have 6" inch socket extension, and a magnetic pickup tool. Pull the strut brace, and you'll have room to work.

I paid $40 for 6 NGK Laser Iridium plugs that from a Honda dealer in OH, and its cost 20 mins of my time. the rear bank you just have to remove the brace frame to get more clearance to work, not rocket science.

Be sure to get a true detailed break down of what is and is not included in that price. Some of the other "deals" didn't include the tensioner nor the idler being replaced. There are gobs of threads in the forums that discuss this in quite a bit of detail. Some threads are several years old while others are just a few days old.

you should also maybe get the oil pump seal done while they're down there. It'll require removing the oil pan too so you're looking at maybe an extra $2-$300, but the alternative is PRAYING that the seal doesn't go bad after you do the timing belt job and paying to have everything in the timing belt area removed again just to get to a $5 seal.

Is the $425 when they do it with the TB? Still better than my $6-$700 for it to be done independently from the TB/WP

Costed me around $1100 when I had it done included all parts and labor, which was $105/hr for 5 hr. They changed serpentine belt and tensioner as well. I did my own spark plugs since it was really easy, just had to take off the strut bar for more clearance. ~$600 is no brainer.

That states that it only inspects the pump and tensionier. Does that mean it will cost you more if they end up having to replace those parts. Normally you want to replace those parts no matter what

^^^well to be honest the 105k MID service pop up calling for inspect all the component and replace just the belt. But with that price my local Acura dealer can do TB/WP ofcourse I doing business with them for a while now, don't expect to show up randomly and getting a deal breaker.

For Tensioner & Idler add $200 + any additional labor.
How about coolant change, is that in the price?
They better check to drive belt tesioner and idler as they have a tendency to go with high mileage, but OEM are $229.
I needed to replace the drive belt tensioner/pulley on our '04 last week when doing the T.B job with just 102,000 miles.

I always do:

T belt
Water pump
T belt Tensioner/Idler
Tensioner spring (when applicable)
Balance shaft belt (when applicable)
Balance shaft belt tensioner/idler (when applicable)
Front main seal
Front cam seal(s)
Thermostat

I recommend Honda Genuine parts and Honda genuine coolant.

I don't remember needing to remove the pan to do a front main seal...but its been a while since I did this on a V6.

You score a deal but I would ask them if they got the TB tensioner done? My TL-S fail at 60k miles and my Base TL is now showing sign of failing and it has 76k miles on the clock.

When I replaced only my timing belt, water pump, and timing belt tensioner. I paid about $950. At the local Acura dealer in Portland. The local Honda dealers were surprisingly more expensive.

Just had my timing belt, water pump, tensioner and spark plugs replaced at an Acura dealer nearby. Along with the valve adjustment and coolant - total came to around 1320 Canadian which is about 1000 US.

Funnily my Honda dealer was charging me 200 dollars more than what Acura ended up charging me....Weird.
