I wouldn't touch the starter unless you have to...especially being 6MT (you are, right?) and have the option to push start if it gets to that point.

I thought it was an easy replacement. At least according to the service manual. 2 bolts holding it in place and the electrical conductor. I'm not looking to rebuild it, but just swap out for a new one. Or am I totally missing something? I've never had to replace one before and to be honest, I haven't looked through AZ yet for a DIY.
My TL is a 6MT, but I can't keep push starting the car forever, lol. This thing has really turned for the worse. I'm guessing it's the copper plates inside that have worn through, but yeah, this morning the car was fine and started instantly. Now it takes me a minute to get the bitch fired

You were talking about rebuilding, weren't you, J? Is there a place to even get replacement parts for a DIY rebuild? I stumbled on an RSX thread on the net where a guy got some Toyota parts to rebuild his RSX starter. Apparently both use the same brand of starter, but Acura didn't sell the replacement parts, where as Toyota did. Not sure if it's possible to do with the TL one... I guess some more research is in order.

Taco, I "reconditioned" my starter and it lived for another year before showing any signs of being a bitch again..
Remove starter, remove armature housing (few bolts), clean off all the carbon buildup. Then check the gaps on teh commuter and even them out like exhibit C

The only bitch of it all is the brush assembly. I used fucking scissors to get it back in place. You'll understand when you do it.
It's not that big of a bitch, but I probably made a good 5 or 6 tries before getting her aligned and in position. Brush is spring loaded and you need to get all 4 retracted at once.
