My 2008 TL Type-S only has 48,000 miles, but the car is going on it's 9th year now (2017). Do I need to change the timing belt, or should I wait until 90-100K to get it changed?

 

Lot's of debate but the concensus is to wait until the MID tells you (usually around 105KMi). But many others say 7-8 years. I had a local indy do mine pretty cheap so I did it at 8 years. I don't recall seeing any reports of snapped belts but then again not sure someone would admit to it if they let it go.

But, this has been debate lots here so this should be a fun thread...NOT

 

How much did the local shop charge you?

 

$300-2500 is the going range. Lots of threads on this topic already within the forums.

 

also to note; if you live in an extreme weather climate, change it early.
but at 48k miles, its likely you garage the vehicle and it probably doesnt see extreme temp swings

I would wait til you get higher in mileage. I changed my Timing belt at 75k miles, ONLY cuz the engine was torn down and it made sense to kill 2 birds with 1 stone

 

I would wait. I changed my brother's 05 TL timing belt with 140k miles on the clock with original belt and it came out looking like it had easily another 50k life left in it.

 

I am curious about this too as I have 2 coming up, one with 75k miles and one with 79k miles, both 07. Might change it this summer, are there any documented reports about the J series timing belts snapped on here?

 

few and far between but not unheard of. After all, it's rubber.

 

I'd agree with this.. I've had two older v6 Acuras with low mileage that were garaged. Both weren't close to the normal mileage to change it but wound up doing them around 13 years.

 

If it's any consolation, still have the original on our '04, 100,300 miles, coming up on 13 years in March.

 

I changed mine at 39k in an 08 for 2 reasons cuz my luck id be that poor bastard whose breaks PLUS I got a screamin deal and couldnt pass it up.

 

Yea my '08 is always garaged and I live in San Jose, CA, so temperature wise it's pretty mild here.
I guess, I am just going to wait longer.
