Snows: 225-55-17, any issues?

So, I definitely want to go narrower than stock for my snows, but I found that the 225/55 was like 20% cheaper than the 225/50 tire, so I think I'm gonna go with that one.

Anyone else here running a 55 series profile tire on stock TL rims with stock suspension?
Any rubbing issues?
Does it look weird?

Any info/pics, etc, appreciated. Need to get tires this weekend. Thanks.

That's like 1.4" taller than stock. So it may look weird.

225/45 is usually inexpensive. So is 215/55.

At stock height you should have no issues at all, other than your speedometer being a bit off. Although the 55 is 1.4" taller than stock, it's only .7" on each end, so it shouldn't look too terrible, especially for a Winter tire.

Huh, that's odd as Discount Tire told me it's only .5" taller each side, or about 1" all around.

I think there's some formula as the 55 is a ratio to the tread width. So, stock is 45 profile, which is off of a 245 tread width, while 55 seems a lot, but it's off a 225 tread width, so I wouldn't think too much taller.
Either way, I can buy the 225/50, which I think would be NO different than the 245/50 in sidewall height, but it was like $165-169 per tire for the 225/50 and it was like $133 for the 225/55. Figured I could save $150 and if it wasn't a big difference....
Anyways, thought I'd check here as I just ordered a set but they aren't signed, sealed and delivered yet. So, if I want to switch, now would be the time.

Your stock size is 235/45/17.

[((235÷25.4)x2)x0.45]+17 = Diameter.

235/45/17 = 25.33", mathematically.

225/55/17 is gigantic. 26.74".

Like 5.5% taller.

Your speedometer will read 5.5% slower at any speed.

Snow tyres also have ridiculous looking bearclaw tread, making them look more ridiculous than normal tyres that are over size.

The OE Michelins were made specifically for the Acura with Honda a spec of 24.7" diameter. These Michelins went out of stock
many years ago, so were back to @ 1"-4.1%. Speedometer 65 mph, actually going 67.7 mph.

225/45/17 is 24.9 diameter, in that case.

The 245/45-17 tires on our TL, installed back in 2010 started out at 25.9", and you may find one that is 25.9",
but when I checked the following before posting they were 25.6" or 25.7", at least from the TR stats:
Fusion, Sumitomo, Pirelli, Kumho, Hankook, General, Firestone, Dunlop, Yokohama, Michelin, Continental

Installed the Nokians @ 225/55 and looked pretty off-road ish. Swapping to 225/50-17 Blizzak. If I had more time I'd save money by going to the General Tire Altimax Artic, but I want to get this done today so just going with Blizzak at an additional $130.

Curious if anyone running a 225/45 on the stock rim. I think I was told by someone if I go much narrower to bump up sidewall a notch. But, not sure if there is any truth to that theory. Seems like there are more snow options in 225/45. Thoughts?

There is thruth that narrower tyres fit wider wheels if they have taller sidewalls.

I am running 225/45/17s on stock TL wheels. MPSS on waffles for summer. Conti EW on base model wheels for winter.

I was also running 215/50/17 for a while.

225/45 is a widely used size on 8" wheels.

They fit fine. They're on a TSX, so I am not concerned about the load capacity not being adequate. 225/45 will likely be fine for a TL as well.

Anyone have a pic of a stock TL rim with 225/50 Blizzaks?

I know snow tire tread blocks are bigger, making them look taller anyways. I think there isn't huge difference between 50 and 55, but would be cool to see.
Your rims look awesome! I have the Type-S knock offs, but the knock offs are much darker and don't look as sharp IMHO. I have to tell myself to be less picky as they are only for snows.
Were a good deal at $110 per rim brand new.

Thanks!

And $110/wheel is tempting to use for a winter set.

Anyway....there is a huge visual difference between 225/50 and 225/55. 225/50 is a stock size for 2nd gen TSX's. I'm sure if you google it, you'll find a 2G TSX on waffles and stock tyres.

I think these wheels are a bargain for $110. Perfect for snows anyways. My roommate ended up ordering the exact same tires (Blizzak WS80s) for his Infiniti G35 from Tire Rack and had them mounted and balanced on a set of aftermarket rims directly from Tire Rack. The wheels he picked out are really quite nice as well. They are a Sport Design rim, and they have some really attractive options.

Here's his...

And, here's mine....

Perfect timing! Got first big snow of the year last night. The Blizzaks seem to perform excellent, so far.
And, I found that the 225/50-17 looks much more visually appealing than the 22/55. The 225/55 looked way too big.
225/45 also seems to be a popular size, but visually I don't notice a big difference.
