3G TL's sheet metal is very fragile
The TL has bumpers that can withstand up to 5mph and it actually holds up! My car rolled backwards after the parking brake failed when I first purchased the car. It rolled into a pole at about 5mph. Bumper was fine. Paint on the other hand....
How do you know its so fragile? How do you know just from pictures what happened in those accidents that the TL failed to hold up but other cars would be fine?
Totaling out a car has more to do with other components of a car not just the sheet metal. Other cars may not have as much technology/sensors/lights/etc that cost as much to replace.

I have personally seen over the past ten years here on AcuraZine countless stories where the 3G protected their occupant(s) from serious bodily injury and/or death.
Additionally, we are talking about a car that is at the very least 8 years old and at the other end of the spectrum- 12 years old. The value of which has significantly diminished so even a minor accident can cause a car to be totaled.

That's not something that cars will come out of in good shape. Any car. Except maybe a tank or a dump truck.

How to total many 3G TLs in one simple move: Hit a rear quarter panel with like, anything.
I am here to tell you in no uncertain terms that yes, older cars will often be deemed a total loss by insurance companies due to the fact that body panels/parts and body shop labor/paint/supplies do not depreciate in direct proportion (if at all) to value of said totaled automobile. Hence you end up with a quote to repair said 8-12 year old vehicle that likely isn't much less than it would have been when the car was relatively new and obviously valued much higher.
It's not that the vehicle can't ultimately be fixed, but why would an insurance company pay a body shop 10k to fix a car that they're on the hook for, for say 8k?
There is a steel beam underneath the Plastic bumper skin. That steel beam is the 5mph bumper.....not the bumper skin, foo

Doesn't that make you wonder how crazy the diet guys are for removing it for weight savings.
It's only intended to handle 5MPH but it's still your first line of defense to hold it all together for a real impact.

as it's ONLY intended for impacts 5mph or LOWER. anything above 5MPH and it's USELESS
I can't believe how much they modified that truck trailer. Never paid attention to it (hey, I was 16 when that movie came out
)
There's no structural beam to that trailer, or the kick stand legs they normally have. They must have moved it to within the trailer, as opposed to it being underneath like on any normal trailer.
Sorry. Thread derail. Back on topic. The TL is old. Even the lightest hit these days can deem it a write off. That, and yes, the car is supposed to crumple like a can. It's better to have a metal body crumple and absorb those forces, than all those forces destroy you inside the car.
