I am a through and through tuner by heart. I love to do motor swaps and think of unique things. I was recently reading alot about swapping the old R34GTR motor into other vehicles. I never thought about it, and also wanted to prod some brains, about swapping an RB26DETT into the RL. I'm sure you could get a transmission adapter to fit the motor to the tranny. Has anyone thought about this or done a project with this?

right now; there is a 458 Ferarri engine going into a tiny FRS/BRZ.
there's also countless v8 swaps into Miatas.
ANYTHING is possible with $80-100k

 

Yeah I meant i could afford the engine with midrange miles, I just have no idea how to do it and the wiring that would be required to keep everything working would be a nightmare to say the least I'm sure

 

Hopefully you have a TON of money or a TON of knowhow. If yes, then make it happen! RB motors are great no matter what they live in!

 

It COULD be affordable, but I have no Idea and lack the tools to pull motors and do the wiring, which means it would be sent to a shop and thats $$$$$$

 

If you want to keep the car with all of its functions, it might be difficult. Possible, but not cheap.

Assuming fitment isn't an issue, you'd need custom engine and transmission mounts, as well as a custom mounting plate for the transmission to attach to the engine. Both have been extensively done. Neither is out of this realm difficult.

I'd imagine the easiest way to do this is one remove the engine out of the RL and start jamming around the the RB26, attached to a hoist, into the bay. That should give you a quick answer on how much fabbing is required.

With the addition of the mounting plate between the engine and transmission, you'll also need to maybe get custom axle lengths. There's enough shops that do this.

Your biggest issue will be with the ECU setup. You'd have to talk to shops or tuners about this. I'm sure there is a way to make everything work but it won't necessarily be easy.

 

wait, isn't the RLX motor transverse mounted? putting a longitudinal motor in would probably not be very easy.

 

Without tools, you aren't much of a tuner, my man. You may have some interesting ideas, but that's as far as the goes if you don't start experimenting and devoting money. Not trying to be a Debbie downer, but many of us have had grandiose ideas like this, for various vehicles, in the past.

You'd simply be better off turboing the shit out of the stock engine. Build it and boost it. It'll be waaaay cheaper, easier to work on, easier to diagnose, etc. Just my

 

Just buy yourself an intake and exhaust and drive that RL until it blows up. Then buy an actual skyline. There's a place in Pompano that imports them straight from Japan if I remember correctly.

 

 

Skylines are a dime a dozen, here. Not so much R34s, but I've seen a few of them start popping up on the roads. R32s are like Civics here.

Well yeah....converting a FWD to a RWD/AWD setup is probably going to need to do major modding of the the engine bay area, modding the chassis/frame, build a transmission tunnel and re-configure the bottom of the interior as well.

I have access to the tools, just don't own hoists and don't have a lift. I thought about doing a big turbo setup but I'm not a big fan of the huge lag because it's really rough on the tranny. I mean if I did anything I would somehow manage to figure out how to custom install the 2.2 liter Kenne Bell and possibly build the tranny. Along with internals. There's so many different routes to go and now that I am older I could really do some interesting things. I've been looking at the CT supercharger but the gain numbers are not really that impressive at all.... I've got a sketch pad with about 3 different options.

 

R35s are dime-a-dozen down here in Fort Lauderdale area but not so much the R32 and 33s

 

I'm going to do a little more homework. Obviously the rb26 route would be the most time-consuming and price costing option but would be the most unique. The CT supercharger would be the cheapest and doing a Roots Style such as a Kenny Bell or a Whipple might be the most badass. I'm going to try to stay away from a big turbo because of all the fuel tuning and supporting mods needed

 

I also vote for a supercharger, it would be so bad ass. People on here are at or above 400hp iirc on their rdx's with a turbo and 5 speed auto.
