TLX MMC New Grille

I liked the previous version better - this looks too Korean, and the giant Acura badge on the front reminds of the hideous, ostentatious MB logo on some of their vehicles. I wonder if one can order the logo with illumination, as on MB. "Hey everyone, look at ME - I paid over 45K for my new car."

At this point in the car business, just abut every type of grill has been tried one time or another it seems. I see a lot of cars with 5-sided grill designs. There is nothing new about this, just the small finishes that make it different. But mostly it makes the Acura look like other mid to lower end cars, not like an upscale car. It's like the finishing details are more important than the shape in this case. And this grill doesn't set Acura apart from the pack.
I didn't like the Version 1.0 of the beak at all and neither did most people. It was over the top and obnoxious before being obnoxious was trendy. But Ver 2.0, after 2012 when they toned it down, and the one on my TLX, look fine to me. They are at least distinctive to Acura. This new grill.... if you put an H in the middle would be at home on Honda. Unfortunately Ver 1.0 poisoned the water for some for any version of the beak. If the first version of the beak was 2.0 we would probably not be having this conversation.

* Sigh * I can't even muster the courage to give my comments on this new design....So long Acura, it was nice riding with ya.
I mean come on! The 2017 Hyundai Elantra looks more cohesive than this....
Now the question, should I close my Acurazine account?? I kept hoping I'd be back soon with Acura but that will not be the case.

I happen to like my 2015 TLX front grill. As for my next car, the grill will not be high on my list of priorities. I'm just saying…..

^^ I think that TLX looks quite aggressive and good. The new grill looks good in that photo. HOWEVER from what I saw on the MDX I do not like it, and prefer the shield. I think it just looks aggressive due to other differences not just the grill

I wonder if theyll apply the new grille to the 2017 model and not wait for the 2018 mmc. Kinda like what they did to the ilx where mmc came early. Would be weird if they continue with the shield when theyve released a model already sporting the new pentagon grille.

^^ I hope they don't actually! Every time we spoon feed them a winning recipe, they turn around and do the opposite. Look at all the amazing renderings that Hondata (on TOV) created and they still serve us vanilla ice cream....
For the record, I agree that the TLX rendering is pretty sweet....(oh look Acura...sexy wheels! Not frisbees!)

Post up on acuraconnected.com. There's also a version with just the grille swap.

I hope to be wrong but be prepared to wait for a long time....the new grille, if done correctly, could work, I personally do not see any particular problem with it....but the TLX issues to be solved, in order to be taken seriously as a sport sedan, are way more serious than a grille change...

This is why Acura is so lost....too afraid to sticking to its guns...like what every proper Tier 1 luxury brand does.
Acura never acquire styling heritage changing all the time...it is a problem in general with Japanese luxury brands but Acura is particularly bad at it.

The new grill seems good to me, I know some people are ragging on it. But don't forget when Audi went to the single frame upper and lower grill connecting into one big one people were getting pitchforks and torches ready. Same with the 'flame sculpting' of side panels and hood on BMWs

I sort of agree with you on that. But there have been other offenders of this too, it may not necessarily be with grills but with other design themes. The Chris Bangle'd BMWs of the early 2000s to 2008, the seemingly slightly out of place nature of the W212 merc E class. But you're right Acura has been a little lost the last few years in terms of design compared to how they were in those stretches of 1991 - 1996 and from 1999 - 2008.

I agree with you too....however Chris Bangle BMW's were still very recognizable as BMWs though...and remember that furious criticism of BMW when the 5 Series came out?? The joke "You know what BMW means in German?? Bangle Muss Weg!! (Bangle Must go!!)
BMW did stick to its guns, they knew they had a superb product in their hands and the customer eventually realized that.
Yes, Audi too.....despite the controversy, they kept their Barbecue grills and eventually it did become a trend actually...
Acura?? They did shake on their boots and completely ditched the Keen Edge design language.
Even in the past, the 2G bears no design similarity with the 3G whatsoever.

The reason I bring up Audi's grill is b/c while it was controversial at the time it ultimately grew on people within 5-6yrs and succeeded to become a trend as you stated. I feel like 2009 - 2016 is a long time to commit to a design (beak) and see where it goes, looks like they're done with that and backing off b/c unlike Audi's single pane grill it never really gained acceptance. This new grill while a strong departure I feel has a better chance of gaining admiration over the years and as refinement occurs purely b/c it is initially more aesthetically pleasing than the original beaks.
hoping it succeeds so something like the precision concept sedan actually makes production without getting completely neutered along the way.

It looks like a good bet that this new grill will be on the MCC, the only question is when will the MCC be? 2017 or 2018? That is probably related to what other changes they will make... new 10-speed tranny for example. If they don't do this at the MCC it will have to wait for an FMC and that may be too long. But I doubt this would be ready for the 2017 model. So maybe the MMC will be 2018 model before the TLX gets this new grill.

the Republic of South Hyundai thanks you for your kind words.
on the other hand the Democratic People's Republic of (North) Kia is threatening nuclear action against Acura for copying it's grille.

But seriously, if Acura looks Korean, that's quite the compliment right about now.
