Has anyone put a transmission cooler on? With all theses mods being put on the transmission must run a lot hotter..

Im about to invest in one after having to replace my transmission, luckly it was under warrenty. Or I should say they really took care of me at acura.. Because I didn't pay a dime to replace it.

what about putting an inline filter in when you add the trans cooler?

 

I've got a cooler, Magnefine inline filter, and a full synthetic fluid.

These transmissions fail mainly from the bad 3rd and 4th gear sensors. Those should be the first priority and will make a world of difference in shift quality. I would replace them every 60K or so.

The cooler and filter are always a good idea. The cooler especially if you're running the stock Z1 fluid.

 

also, does anyone know which direction the trans fluid flows when interrupting the small hose on the trans and installing a tranny cooler? i ask because i'm looking into putting a gauge on the cool return side so i can see the temp its running at.

 

i just had my 4th gear sensor replaced under my extended warranty, right before it ran out.

on the acura invoice the sensor was only $40, so replacing the 3rd gear one wouldn't be too bad, especially since i think i read somewhere that they are installed externally and therefore are relatively easy to change.

are the 3rd and 4th gear sensors the same part number, just on a different part of the trans?

 

I'll go and trace mine out when it cools off a little today. The filter has to be installed with flow going a certain way so it will be easy. I'm a little too hungover to go in the sun right now.

btw, i'm thinking about putting a gauge in the car, but i'm not too keen on using the standard circular ones, as i just don't know where in the TL i can stick it and not have it look gaudy. i've done the whole a-pillar thing in my mustang, and i'm not doing it here.

i went looking for rectangular digital gauges, something nice and small, but so far i can only find one from dakota digital and its around $100.

anyone else running gauges for trans temp.....pic?

got my cooler install done today. started last night, took about 7 hours total.

mounting the cooler itself was easy. connecting the lines to the trans was one of the more pain in the butt jobs i've done on cars.

 

What model did you use? Did you have to remove your bumper?

I just got the the 70255. I'm going to install it this weekend...

I should of went with that one. The one I have the 72055 is really small not sure if it's going to make a difference, but when I talked to the tech guy at B&M he said to go with the 72055.

I think I'm going to send it back and get the 720264.

6MTs don't need a cooler, you *could* put one in, but it would do you absolutely no good.

be happy, it's an annoying job to do, and you don't have to do it!

Glad you got it. The cooler is one thing you really can't go too big on unless you live in a very cold area. The one on my TL is the same style and brand but it's about double the size. You can get them in the junkyard for about $15 off of a truck. That size is popular on the Explorer and Ranger. You can usually find a large one on the larger trucks. These things don't wear out so as long as they aren't damaged, there's no need to buy a new one. Just make sure to clean them very well.

 

It would be only for looks. There's no pump to circulate fluid lol.

 

A manual doesn't have a torque convertor so it doesn't create any real heat.

What's the HP limit for the 5AT for the Type S. I want to add some power to my car, but I don't want to destroy my transmission in the process. Yes, I know I screwed my self with the AT, but it's got paddles!

Anything short of the turbo kit and you won't hurt it. It will take whatever boltons you want.

i wish i could find a temp gauge I like and be able to do some testing with and without the cooler hooked up (since it can be easily bypassed). i hate that i don't actually know what its doing for me

So the Stock Type-S has a tranny cooler? No need to purchase one?

 

Just to clarify...

All auto TLs have a water to oil cooler but it's very undersized.

The Type S has the water to oil cooler plus an air to oil cooler

I've never looked closely at the Type S cooler but I'm sure it's on the small side as most factory coolers are. It would be incredibly easy to add a larger cooler on the Type S since the lines are already there. Just find a way to secure the new larger cooler and clamp the lines on.

You should always keep the factory water to oil cooler because it stabilizes the oil. If you have a large spike in temps, it will knock it down quickly and then send it to the external cooler for additional cooling.

Engine coolant runs around 198 degrees that that's the coolest the trans could ever run with just the factory cooler. When you figure regular factory trans fluid starts degrading rapidly after 220 degrees, you can see how an external air to oil cooler would help a lot.

 

It does have an external oil to air cooler. If you drive the car hard and/or are modded, or live in a hot climate, it's always a good idea to go with the overkill.

I've always been a believer in overkill when it comes to water, trans, and engine oil cooling. I like to have a ton of reserve capacity built in so that I don't have to worry in any situation.

I'm installing external trans cooler in my 04TL and I have it installed but have no idea where on transmission to connect the hoses . Can you tell me how did you hook up those hoses from cooler ?

If you have time , can you indentify where the cooler hoses should be connected to the trans ?
