Hidden Plate update

I got the hidden plate mod done today and it works just fine . I have a 1" drop and there is over an inch of clearance and the way the dual hinges articulate even lower isn't a problem. In the up possition it doesn't rub the paint but I added a small strip of foam weather stripping just in case the wind blows it back.

Here are some pix .

Plate in the up position.

Plate 1/2 down

Plate vertical under the car

Plate retracted fully ( hard to get a pix without lifting the car. )

And view from the front 8 feet away squating. Once I paint the bolt heads black they won't be noticable.

wow, very ingenious and practical! looks like it clears the ground by cm's!

however, cops aren't stupid, if they see you didn't have a plate then, suddenly you have one. you can be sure he's going to inspect it and discover your mechanism. however, not sure if he can force you to remove it or impose a more strict penalty next time you might be caught without a front plate.

happy cruising!

Nice mod!!! I have been wanting to get rid of the front plate since I got the car, its such a clean look with the ACURA decals! but as is the case with alot of ppl, I HAVE to have the front plate in IL... I wonder how well the cops could enforce the plate issue, or if they would just make you display it if you were pulled over with it hidden?

Either way, I'd be interested in seeing the final DIY for this!

I run the plate while moving .. then have the option to flip it down for show & shines etc.. They NEVER ding you here unless your moving.

Nice job!

With the 2 hinges on each side the hinging articulates and there is lots of clearance folding it under..

Cool, I think I may do this. Like others, I am in Texas and we have to have the front plate on as well but I've been driving mine around 2+ years without it on. Even got a couple speeding tickets and all the cops have ever said was that I need to put it on. It is in my glove compartment...

You'll save a whole lot on tolls, meaning you wouldn't have to pay them anymore?? LMAO
So 180 bucks aint bad, you'll be making it back within a year or sooner depending how often you use the toll systems...........

WOW... I def want to do this mod.
Looks pretty good on the TL too.
Im wondering if there is a fold out
that is just like the Audi one & can
be intergrated with the TL?
I like how it just folds down enough
to pull underneath the car... SWEET

The bolts even tho visable in the pictures don't show up in regular light because of the black air dam and pavement behind them. I do a lot of shows and no one have ever noticed the bolts. The camera flash made them stand out.

The back one would be awesome for speed camera avoidance. Covers and sprays are illegal in Arizona and we have more speed cameras than cars it seems. Flip the switch as you approach the camera and no ticket for you. We don't need front plates so it's a clean getaway.

I drive through 8 speed cameras round trip to work and 4 totally different cameras to go to the mall or grocery store.

What better way to fund the state budget than $250 photo tickets.

is this automatic? Like you got a switch to bring the plates up n down? If not, try to work on that. So then u can do it without getting out of your car.

Can you please take a video of it in action? Also what if my car is dropped like 1.75 in down, will it still work?

Its not automated .. measure fron the bottom of your bumper to the ground and I'll measure the clearance under the plate at its lowest point when I'm putting it down.

Lol, thats ironic...the wrx one actually has a practical use while the front plate is only for ascetics... FAIL

The hinges are spring loaded and that keeps it there .. same as when the hinges pull the cupboard doors shut the last few inches....no problems in a year of use now .

Awesome idea since I've been trying to come up with one for some time now that slides under my car (don't want to pay $100+ for that...). I'm in CA and of course the front plate is required..

In CA, they'll ding you when you're not moving, especially when you're parked on the side of the road. When I started my last job, I was waiting to get a parking space and had to park on the road (without my plate). Over the course of my first couple weeks ... I got 5 "no front plate" tickets when I got back to my car. It really depends by state and even by city but they can hit you just as hard with a no front plate citation even if you're parked it seems.

Note that in CA, they can even cite you a 2nd time or 3rd time in the same day if you move your car, like in a 2 hr parking zone or if you have to move your car by a certain time. (They can't cite you for 8 hrs after the first citation, but if you move your car, they can legally cite you again!!)

Now ya know what would be really cool, get one of the good automatic ones, but instead of having a switch, wire it to a switched power source so whenever the car is on the plate is out, and when u park it goes away

Never a problem at all in either the up or down. The hinges are spring loaded.
