What is the benefit of the organ style accelerator pedal?

I ordered the aluminum pedals accessory for my '11 TSX Tech 6MT from an EDM dealer.

Which got me thinking. What is the benefit of the organ style accelerator pedal (mounted from floorboard) vs the ones suspended from above?

Does it make it easier to double clutch and heel-and-toe downshift? I do notice that when I put my heel right up against the bottom of the pedal, it is more comfortable and easier to modulate the pedal, especially at freeway speeds.

Lower center of gravity....because racecar!

It could be for better ergonomics for people with small feet reaching the pedal or people with really big feet hitting the throttle components tucked up under the dash. Most people drive with the heel on the floor and pivoting the foot. I guess to avoid complaints, just make the pedal go all the way to the floor so people with different sized feet are happy. When you brake, your heel is usually not on the floor and you're using your leg muscles to apply pedal force.

It could also be for making packaging the throttle components easier or for better geometry/motion ratios.

for me, it easier to heel-toe.

plus, a bit safer? the floor mat can't catch the pedal and have it stuck to the floor, like the toyota floormat/unintended acceleration thing from a few years ago

I think it comes to personal preference. I like the TSX pedal, it's relatively stiff which makes it easy to modulate the pressure (my personal preference).
Note that all new Acuras (e.g. TLX and ILX) use the suspended pedal.

My thinking as well. Also, if you tote kids around, their toys could roll around and find their way under the gas pedal. A floor mounted pedal would prevent this.

Not quite sure, but I think historically, gas pedals started out as floor mounted. But then mud, water, garbage would foul the mechanism (inside the cabin and behind the firewall) so engineers raised the pedal.

But now I see a trend back to floor mounted pedals... because race car! Well, that, and it's throttle by wire now. Also modern engineering is better at being water tight.

Unfortunately, this. This is likely why.
