Wagon antenna vs. Sedan antenna

I have noticed that the sedans get a traditional sharkfin antennae, but the wagons have a phallic looking one instead. I saw this on both the tech and non-tech package cars at my dealer, and of course they had no idea or had even noticed it before. It used to be that OnStar equipped Acuras had a similar change, but these cars don't have that. Can somebody tell me what the difference is for? Maybe the smaller sedan antenna could be put on a wagon.

Is there some extra data transmitted in the antennas that poke out?

Our Euro Spec Accords all have the antenna built into the rear-screen/under it so nothing pokes out of the car?

The US cars have XM/Sirius satellite radio.

I'm not sure why the wagon and sedan are different.

It's all about aerodynamics and wind tunnel testing. The sedan's sharkfin has to be sleek to cut through the air at 160mph. But who would ever take a box with four wheels known as a wagon above 50 mph? I mean really... the Radio Flyer is something a five year old plays with.

I would assume that it is used since the wagon can come with a roof rack. I have hit the one on my sister's RDX several times removing stuff with out it breaking it. However the MDX has a flat one. So your guess is as good as mine.

wraith, that's so far probably the best guess but odd that it isn't necessary for the MDX. I can see a bit of logic that it can use a bigger antenna in case bikes and boxes are blocking the antenna.

so has anyone tried swapping antennas.

I have the wagon and would like less of an antenna........like a smooth sharkfin would be nicer IMO unless some reception is lost.

The base of the sharkfin is larger than the little pointy antenna so you would need to cut a larger hole in the roof. The sharkfin also sticks up higher than the traditional antenna sans mast so there may be problems with things on the roof rack.

In the sedan, the sharkfin antenna *only* houses the XM antenna. It could be just flat (similar to the Accords with XM) but I guess it's cooler to have it look like a shark fin. On the sedan, the FM and AM antenna is integrated in the read window.

The wagon's FM, AM and XM antenna is an all-in-one on the roof, hence the pointy "stick". The base of the antenna houses the XM while the pointy stick is the FM/AM one. I suspect that they were not able to fit an FM/AM antenna on the Wagon's rear window.
