Underbody rust, is it normal?

After getting under my car and evaluating it some more there are some rust spots in a couple of places. My question is, is that normal? The only bad area is inside the wheels, for whatever that is seems to be rusted a lot. After asking a couple of people they said that is normal.

Also, I have a little rust on the front bumper, looks like its from paint chip. Any suggestions on how to take care of it?

Thanks guys

I would say what ever you are looking at is most likely not rust. The frt bumper is plastic, so it would be pretty for it to rust. The wheels are alloy and I have never seen rust on an alloy wheel.

The rust is on the inside of the wheel. If I took off the tire thats where the rust is.

Your front bumper is made of plastic. So clearly that is not rusting. Further, aluminum does not rust, so your wheels are not rusting either. Rust refers to iron or steel corrosion. It is the process where ferric metals (those based on iron) oxidize, or combine with oxygen. Aluminum is not a ferric metal. When aluminum corrodes it becomes aluminum oxide, which looks just like aluminum but has a white appearance and is actually hard to notice. What you're seeing on the wheel is most likely brake dust.

Mistaking brake dust for rust?

Try using a claybar kit on the front bumper.

Do you mean that if you took off the wheel/tire, placed it to the side and looked at where the wheel/tire mounts to, has rust on it? Surface rust on the hub and rotor is normal. Rust on the braking surface of the rotor is not normal, other then slight surface rust you might see in the AM after sitting at night.

I would like to see pics. I just picked up my new Rdx and there is rust on the wheel hubs. It has 270 miles on it. If someone responds to my post, I will take and post pics tomorrow, since this is not my thread.

If you see rust (or rust colour) on the inside of your wheels, then it could be rust stain from the hubs that runs or drips onto your wheels when it is wet.

My Acura RDX had a lot of rust staining on the backside of the rims - which is very unsightly. I tried liberally coating the wheel hubs with some anti-sieze to reduce the amount of staining.

This thread is several months old.

It's been said many times that it's not rust you're seeing on your wheels or bumper...

FlopMeister, post pics of where your rust is. If it's on the brake hub, that's normal.

I do not know about the front bumper having rust! Maybe the dealer installed screws that were too long into the front license plate bracket and it went into the metal bumper behind the plastic nose cone??

But the rear wheels I know about, My 2012 has the rust on the aluminum wheels. But it is Not the wheels it s the backing plates on the rear brakes rusting to hell!!!
My next trip to the dealer, I am going to show them and see what they say.
Funny I noticed the backing plates rusting after my first washing of the car.
But other than that I must say my car was put together well (So Far)!

Surface rust on untreated metals like brake rotors will develop within hours of washing a car - new or used. When you brake, this surface rust scrubs right off. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about. The rotor hat will also rust like mad - again normal - but that won't come off with braking.

This has nothing to do with Acura. It happens on every car..

I haven't been a member long enough to post photos.

The rust is on the front wheel knuckles.

To Ceb,
It is not the rotors themselves that are causing rust on the wheels/rims. It is the backing plates located behind the rotors that are rusting out on mine.
The backing plates were rusty the first week I got it. All the pictures posted show normal surface rust the halfshafts, exhaust, etc.
Backing plates do rust but usually after several years.
