Short Shifter - Worth it in our TSX?

Wondering if this mod is worth it? I have never driven with a short shifter, but have heard of its advantages. I do feel though that our stick is pretty smooth as is, compared to all the other cars that i have driven in stick, this is by far the best. So was wondering if its worth the time and money to purchase and install this? How much better would i be changing gears with it?

The effort is increased a bit, but the distance is shortened. I am not a fan of the third gear throw in this car, everything else is great, but third gear is just too forward of a throw, the CT shifter fixes this a bit, but the 2 to 3 shift is just too long to be able to do a full throttle shift like my older honda's with short throws.

How hard is the install? and do i need anything else, like new shifter bushings?

also can i keep the shift knob that comes with the car. I think it looks better than the one thats included... and will that negatively impact shifting, if i dont use the included knob (i believe it may be weighted)?

I can't speak to the second gen, but I had this in my 04 TSX, and it was great. I generally think that the effect of modifications is overstated by those who modify, but I loved the short shifter every time I changed a gear and would put one on again. It made shifts feel tighter and more precise. There may have been additional effort but I either got used to it or felt that trade-off was definitely worth it.

I also did metal shifter bushings but I'm not really sure how much that mattered.

As for the short shifter, DO IT!!!!

On the second gen it isn't too bad, just have to remove the shift bow, and then follow the directions included. You can use the factory knob, that's what I've been using also.

what is the shift bow? do you have a pic of it?

About ready to purchase this, so just want to make sure it is something i can do myself.

And what do you think of this mod? do you really like it? is it worth it?

Sorry, meant the shift BOX. You have to pull the box out to put the short shifter on. It's not too bad, if you have small hands it'll be really easy. I have mid size hands and putting the shift cables back into the box and out of the box was the most time consuming portion of the install. When I get home later this week I can take a pic of the area if you'd like, or if you'd like to look yourself, grab that gap next to the e brake, and pull UP on it, that piece of plastic with the cup holders, it'll pop out of place. After it's up, keep pulling, it's all one big piece all the way to the heated seats button. You can take a look at what you'll be working with.

I like the shorter throws, yes, but I wish that 2-3 shift a little shorter. To me, third gear is just way too far a throw, but that's due to oem design, nothing ct can do about that. But it does help out a bit no doubt. I pulled the solid shifter bushings out, I am just using the stock rubber bushings.

This is a lot of good information. I'm also thinking about purchasing this. Especially if it makes 2-3rd shift better, cause right now i'd have to agree with optimus with it being such a far throw.

Optimusaccord, how come you pulled out the shifter bushings? i saw heeltoe recommended replacing the bushings with better ones, which i was also thinking of doing.. is it not necessary. And the pulling of the shift box and cables, is not included in the instructions?

sorry for all the questions, just want to know what i am getting myself into.

I would LOVE a short shifter for my '12 se but im just afraid of losing the effortless force it take to change gears. With a short shifter, does the throws get a little harder to shift?

I had the solid aluminum bushings, and one day I was shifting a little harder than normal, and I bent my shift cable. It happened so quickly, I had no idea what happened. I have to state, this was not the units that heeltoe sells, so I cannot speak to those. But, 250 dollars later, and me swapping the cables out, my shifting was back to normal. SO, after that experience, I decided to just skip over it for awhile. Maybe I will try heeltoe's units out, but for now I want a supercharger or turbocharger. The shifter is ok with how it is now.

hey just spoke to marcus from heeltoe, to his knowledge they do not have bushings that properly fit the cu2s, and the only thing they do is make it feel like it locks into gear better, or something of that nature.

Its also a stiffer shift, and requires more effort?

do you guys agree, or would you say it feels pretty good in terms of smoothness in changing gears, and locks into place well without newer bushings?

THanks.

on my rsx-s i had the revo technica racing short shifter. it was a complete replacement, not just an added adapter. it was the best mod i had done to that car. i wish they made something similar for the tsx

So this isnt a full replacement? Just an adapter. Can anyone confirm this?

the revo i had on the rsx was a full replacement (housing, shorter shirft rod).
most other short shift kits on the market are adapters that you bolt onto the OEM shift rod. apparently these just shorten the shift throw, but not the shift height. Im assuming that all CU2 TSX short shifters are adapters

The short shifter you posted says 09- which I believe used to say 04-09 when I was looking for a short shifter. You might want to find confirmation that it will fit your 2012.

Why anyone would throw a short shifter on a four door sedan is beyond me... but hey to each their own.

Because I have kids, but like to tinker with my car.

Why anyone would ask something like that is beyond me.

two door, four door... if its fun to drive with a short shifter, whats the difference? im sure EVOs and STIs have choices for aftermarket short shifters.

Im plus one for a short shifter in my CU2. Such a small mod and it makes the car so much more fun to drive.

Still so tempted to just go through with this. So top concerns.

1. Shifting will be more difficult from what i have researched, meaning more effort to shift, but a lot less throw.. .meaning better, shorter shifts... meaning more fun?
2. There are apparently no Bushings made to fit for our car... so just leave what is there? This will have no negative effect on shifting? What would the positive be if there were some available in the future for me to swap out?
3. anything else anyone would like to add? am getting antsy

4. What is the likelihood of there being any issues with shifting, or the add on or original stick breaking in the future if it is properly installed?

Thanks.

yeah i hope it works out to your liking. Although after reading through this thread i'd like to wait and see if they came out with a full short shifter instead of just the adapter but if your review is positive i might do this too.

i highly doubt they will release a full short shift kit (assembly) for the CU2, seeing as there are not that many 6MT tsx's out there to warrant one. now, if it is the same exact shifting assembly as a civic Si, than that might help

im actually happy with the stock height of the stick. Looking for faster and shorter shifts. This has gotten great reviews from people here and from gen 1 owners. So hopefully it works out.

I had one on my RSX, I didn't need one on my S2000...I miss the S2K short throws...I feel like I am driving a 18-wheeler when I shift my TSX...

Is that the adapter linked in the first post?
