It sounds like everything I feared happened.

More weight? Check.
Loss in power to weight ratio? Check.
Dulled handling? Check.
Reduced road feel in the steering? Check.

I will probably still go and test drive it, but I suspect that if the rags all read like this one, then I will be disappointed. And are they seriously making the Bluetooth part of the Tech package instead of standard?

Uh-Oh.

On the other hand, R&T was never really a big fan of the current car so lets see what C&D and MT have to say.

But it looks like all our fears have been realized.

Is more power on the way? Acura spokespeople remain characteristically tight-lipped, saying only that the TSX's engine bay is large enough to accept a V-6, or a turbo and its plumbing. Hmm, "TSX Type-S" does have a nice ring to it.

If I recall correctly, Acura 'spokespeople' were adamant from day 1 of the first gen launch that a V6 would not fit in the TSX nor would there be another engine option. So thats promising in itself.

It sounds like it's about as fun to drive as a marshmallow, and for the low low price of $35K! Where can I get one?

Perhaps they did some of those things to make it differ from the coming Type S model? That way they can publicize not only more power but also better handling ... Not to mention it sounds like this model is geared more to the luxury buyers & hopefully the Type S will cater more towards the performance enthusiasts.

if prices are as stated - roughly $29000 for a decently equipped tsx and $35000 with all the options - i fear that acura will only be making the TL a more feasible option. Similar pricing and options, but the TL has more power and more room. I must admit, however, that the new TSX pics look better in that article than I expected.

I think that that situation will be alleviated when the 2009 TL debuts in roughly 6 months ...

No, they're not. From the press release:

For example, Bluetooth® connectivity is standard and includes a HandsFreeLink® cellular telephone interface that makes communications easier and safer while en route.
The buff book auto journalists are hacks these days. The pricing is just a WAG too; they don't know anything about that.

It sounds like my fears about the electric steering are confirmed.

But I doubt that will alleviate the issue of the extra weight or the supposedly less communicative electric power steering.

YOU can get one for 45K CAD at your local Acura dealership.

Just make sure this one doesn't burn oil.

100%

A nice package for the average driver but less of an enthusiasts car than the outgoing model.

Red face Luxury vs Performance

I realize that I may be giving Acura too much credit but hopefully they are making the base model more like the ES where lack of power & heavier weight will not matter as much to the target consumer wanting a luxury-esque ride; the Type S will be like the IS & geared towards the performance seekers ....

And a new electric-assist steering, while one of the best examples of the breed, doesn't quite offer the road feel of the outgoing model's hydraulic system.

The amazing steering is the first thing I noticed the very first time I ever got behind the wheel of my baby.

You and me both. That's why I actually preferred the 1st gen TSX to the TL....handling is so much more important than straight-line acceleration IMO.

What a disappointment. In my eyes it's bland looking, fat, underpowered, and... huge compared to the 1st gen. And all for $35k? How could I lose!

There's no shot I'm giving up my car for this one.

Thumbs down

When I look at the front of that car, it makes me want to puke.

I had no intentions of keeping my '08 at all, none really.
As soon as I heard the '09 would be out in April and it was getting
a full makeover, I thought, "oh, well that'll be much nicer I'm sure."

I didn't want to buy a car in it's last year of design and be pissed
driving it around while the new cars of the new model year made it
look like outdated junk.

Well...

As soon as I saw the pictures of that '09 I started buying up mods for my
'08. You couldn't catch me dead in that car as it stands right now, no way.

Our TSX is classic, sleek, stylish, timeless, sporty and luxurious all in one.
The new TSX is ... ... confused.

Big thumbs down from me to Acura on this one, the new RL too.
What is happening over there?

WAKE UP ACURA, YOUR NEW CARS SUCK!

Oh, and on the Type-S thing... I don't need Acura to make a Type-S TSX,
I can just mod my car to or beyond Type-S features and make my own
Type-S TSX for probably much less than they would charge, and it'd look way
better.

Hmmm.... new idea has just struck. Can I do a type-s thing on my '08 and
not have it be rice? If done right, yes.

Plus side to this: I imagine my 06 will keep an even better resale value.

Definitely going to test drive the 09, and the diesel when it comes out, but for now the new direction of the TSX has lost my interest. 35K for a fully equipped I4, with this styling and the stated driving characteristics? no, thank you. Even though they weren't the biggest fans of the 1st gen, even THEY say it handled better.
