Replace just the muffler w/ aftermarket bolt on?
I know nothing about exhaust as far as modification. Rather than getting a full catback exhaust, do aftermarket mufflers exist without having to take a hacksaw and weld a new one on there? I'd like to wake up the sound a bit (hopefully no rasp or drone), but I'd rather put $1k for a full catback into other areas of the car rather than the exhaust. Not looking for performance increase.
For example, this Tanabe exhaust has an elbow that comes out of the back of the muffler that connects to the car's exhaust (Y-Pipe?). Haven't had a chance to look under the car and see if thats possible with oem. Assuming it does it seems like this would be an easy two beer driveway job Is there a bolt on way to achieve replacing just the muffler?

you're looking for what is called an "axle back"
if a full cat back is everything from the cat and back....the axle back would be everything from the rear wheels and back.
unfortunately, not a lot of aftermarket companies make "axle backs" for the japenese cars...however, you'll find tons of axle backs for american muscle cars.

The stock system is bolted at the front cat and then there's a second flanged joint at the back end, similar to what's highlighted yellow in the picture above, but it's only on one side.
That is, the stock exhaust is only 2 pieces. You can't replace just the mufflers without cutting.

Looked into this and everyone is right, the stock exhaust doesn't work this way. Buying a used exhaust is not worth it, might as well buy an aftermarket one. I'd love to get bit more sound but I really don't want to have someone take hacksaw/welding to the stock one. The shops in my area are junky and I know they will do a shit job.Looks like you have to pay to play.

This is true.
My backup has always been buy a cat back if my welds started to hole up.
That day never came and I still have my chop job but I kept the OEM tips nice and clean so w/e
