It's Happening - TLX

  • Newly-named TLX will feature more dynamic and sporty proportions, two new advanced powertrains and a host of signature Acura technologies
  • TSX to be discontinued as Acura creates clear hierarchy for luxury sedan lineup
Acura today announced that the 2015 Acura TLX Prototype performance luxury sedan will debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit in January. The TLX will mark the debut of a new name for Acura's mid-size modern luxury sedan entry, replacing the outgoing TL model. The all-new model will feature more emotional styling with tidier, sports sedan proportions wrapped around two all-new advanced powertrains that provide even more athletic performance, along with a host of signature Acura technologies. The 2015 TLX Prototype is designed to appeal to current and next-generation luxury sports sedan buyers including existing TL and TSX customers.
In conjunction with the launch of the production TLX in the second half of next year, Acura will discontinue sales of the TSX model in 2014, as it moves to clarify its sedan lineup with a clear hierarchy of three distinct models – the entry luxury ILX, mid-size TLX sports sedan, and flagship RLX performance sedan.
"This all-new Acura TLX is the perfect blend of style and muscle with its elegant, well-proportioned exterior that cloaks the true sport sedan chassis and powertrain beneath," said Mike Accavitti, senior vice president, American Honda Motor, Co., Inc. "The sporty characteristics that customers found appealing in the TSX are even more pronounced in this aggressive new TLX."
The all-new Acura TLX will offer luxury buyers a wider range of choices with two all-new, high-performance and highly fuel-efficient direct-injected engines, each mated to an all-new advanced transmission, along with available two-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. The TLX will also feature dynamic and emotional exterior styling wrapped around a mid-size luxury sports-sedan package that maintains the roomy cabin space of the current TL.
The TLX Prototype was designed in Acura's Los Angeles Design Studio and the production model is being developed by Acura engineers at the company's Ohio R&D center. It will be produced at the Marysville, Ohio auto plant1, home to the current Acura TL.
Speaking at the Acura press conference at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 14, 2014 will be Mike Accavitti, senior vice president, American Honda Motor, Co., Inc.

kind of sad the TSX will be discontinued, I think they could have kept it in between the ILX and TLX, I don't understand why they would do this to us

Just noticed this a few minutes ago as well.

So, does anyone know exactly what this potentially means to our TSX?

J/K

whats with all the doom/gloom. this happens all the time.

if a used vehicle has a good rep....as tsx do......resale value wont be hurt much.

The MAIN change we will see soon,,,,,as the price of used 2nd gen drops it allows anyone to buy into the club.

TSX will get the axe following the 2014 release. seen some spy pics of the TLX...taillights look like the current TL. not a fan but the exhaust tips are there...they could still be hidden by the time the production model comes out though...

Three things,

1. We can finally stop seeing a post every few months by someone claiming the TSX is dead.

B. If this design sucks, you can blame Americans. More specifically, the Los Angeles Design Studio.

3. Still no coupes.

Hopefully the TLX resembles the current TSX more than the current RLX.
Hooray, my car is now a collector's edition.

How big is the TLX going to be? TL was almost 5 series size. Should've killed off the fucking ILX and kept the TSX.

Following typical Honda/Acura fashion, the "prototype" shown at the Detroit Auto Show next month will pretty much be all production sheetmetal with bumper cover designs that won't make it into production.

I'm guessing the TLX interior space will be similar to the current TL, but the body will be much "tighter" so it will seem like it has a smaller exterior. They did something similar to the current gen Accord. I'm wondering if the TLX will lose the double wishbone front suspension like the Accord did to help with shrinking the exterior and maximizing the interior space.

Knew this would happen! My lease ends in Jan' 15 for my SE TSX 6 Speed. I hate that fact the entry level Honda/Acura Civic/ILX sells for same price as TSX, and that would mean that TLX will start at mid 30's or higher. Hope the ILX is improved upon by then because I won't be taking a risk keeping the TSX for another few years and have the resale value go down with time since it is retired.

I can't wait to see it, but I am sure the price point will push lot of people away. I am willing to bet base will be $35k, and fully loaded around $42K.

the value of the 13 TSX took a dive already because they kept producing them through 2014, dammit.

Not sure if I like hidden exhaust tips. Still undecided on that factor. I'm more excited to see how the jewel eyes will look on this car. I've seen them in person on the new MDX and they look great. Really bright and crisp.

So.... no manual for the TLX?

This news just confirms what we've known for over a year. There's nothing new to see here folks, so just keep it moving.... Oh, and the TL is built on the NA (North American) Accord platform (the last Accord). The TLX will be built on the present Accord platform, and I'd guess it's safe to assume will have the same front suspension (though the super-duper all wheel drive model may have it's own). So.... if you want to know how big the TLX will be, just go look at a new Accord. Maybe someday the ILX will actually be an Acura, and until then, with discontinuing the TSX (which itself was/is at most not to be confused with the first gen car), Acura, whether they know it or not, will be abandoning a market niche they more or less created with the 1st generation TSX.

I wouldn't be too worried about resale. Not only does the TSX have a stellar reputation, but it will be smaller as well. The TLX will most likely inherit the huge turning circle of the TL and current Acura.

The ILX was the prototype for the 2014 Civic and the 2013/14 Accord Touring was most likely the prototype for the TLX.

Like Simba said - nothing to see here, just move along.

Thats the Honda Crider built in China and for the China market. It's based off the civic platform with a 1.8L engine. Not as big as an Accord, but bigger than a civic....kind of like what the 1st gen TSX was.

I like my import! Wonder if it will have the same quality as the tsx since it's being made here.

That being said... I applied to Honda R&D and if I get hired, I'd make sure it was legit hahaha.

the direct injection engine really is better, the 2012 genesis v6 went to direct injection in 2013, and gained nearly 50whp
....there is hope for the honda v6 after all!

its FWD so itll be limited to like the high 2s...(and RLX is 310 so its not gonna be higher or close) it may not use the eSh-Awd and they might reserve it as a party trick for the NSX/RLX and so who knows. Two new DI-engines though so im expecting like 220 out of an ED 4pot fwd and a 290 6banger with ShAwd

Nice white text

The TLX seems really promising, and the tsx as everyone has said is already outdated.

It will be interesting to see if the "all-new advanced transmission" will be the 7-speed dual clutch found in the new RLX Sport Hybrid.

Agreed.... but. It will most likely be the CVT or the 6 AT, now found in the TL and the V6 Accord, mated to the 4, with the 6 AT behind (actually next to) the V6. The price point (plus maintaining some market distance from the RLX) would seem to make those the only logical choice. The super duper all wheel drive with the 6 MT should be a drop in, so even though a sale of one of those is as rare as hen's teeth, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see this combo carried over.

In a way, they have kept the TSX -- but it's now called the Accord Sport. The formula is similar, anyway.

With two engines and both FWD and AWD, I expect the TLX to cover wide ranges for price and performance, and I could envision a really hot TSX-like variant with one of the upcoming VTEC Turbos.

I'm not to fond of the cvt at all, BUT, I haven't experienced Honda's CVT yet. I definitely expect the 6AT to be carried over. It wouldn't surprise me either to see the 6MT with SH-AWD carried over.

"...each mated to an all-new advanced transmission, ..."

I don't see how a carry over 6AT is consistent with Acura's press statement. None of us may know what the truth is right now, but it seems that it is something other than the current 6AT. We'll see in a few weeks.

Is it only me? but I think The jewel eye headlights are ugly as sin and make the whole front end look to busy. Yet everyone can't wait to see them on a smaller car where they will look really out of place.
