Cabin filter that helps against exhaust smell

I have a basic white cabin filter that I installed in the car about 6 months ago (
This One) This One)
. I can't comment on the dirt old OEM Honda one that was in there, but if the HVAC system is not on circulation mode, it seems to be a vaccum for other car's exhaust smell. You know, that 1997 Dodge Dakota, 1992 Buck Regal with a hole in its exhaust, or most school busses that we sit behind on at stop lights. When I start smelling the exhaust I lower the window and turn off the heat. I prefer circulation but depending on the weather, my windows fog up in minutes. Does anyone have an issue where there TSX will not filter exhaust fumes from other cars and bring it into the cabin?

Here are few fancy ones for sale on Amazon:
Amazon Amazon
- This one has Carbon in it
Amazon Amazon
- Bosch HEPA filter

Are you sure you don't have an exhaust leak somewhere in your car?

I've always gotten the carbon ones but I also mostly keep my cars on re-circulation mode though.

No, no exhaust leak. When I start smelling it I can tell the car right away thats doing it. My morning route has a lot of stinky school busses. It's not a constant problem.

The main reason for not using re-circulation is using the AUTO feature for the cabin temp. For some reason it only works on non-circulation mode. As soon as I put it in re-circulation it turns off auto and just blasts the temp that I set it at.

I don't think the cabin filter is the issue here. You might have an exhaust leak because that doesn't sound normal.

fellas, he's talking about following old stinky school buses/Fire engines/old pieces of shit cars.
while following behind these cars, he can smell their exhaust gasses.

P.S. a Fire engine pulled out in front of me once at 5am. That big ass machine let out so much exhaust fumes; I had to drop back like 2 blocks.
It was a cold start. as the Engine came right out of the fire station. OMG that was the nastiest smelling fumes ever

Ohhhhhh well that makes more sense.

I bought a cabin filter with "arm and hammer baking soda" in it. Its very subtle. It smells like nothing 99% of the time but every once in a while I get a slight smell which reminds me of fresh laundry. I love it.

I think that's correct operation.
After stinky bus turns off street, I hit the auto button again

Sounds like there is room for improvement in the cabin filter I have. Glad to read that no one came in here and said this is normal.

Amazon Amazon
- This one has baking soda AND cabron! It's made by Fram though :/

Edit - Screw Fram, went with this one

If im remembering correctly that's the one I have.

"FRAM and Arm & Hammer combine technologies to provide premium cabin air filtration and help prevent musty odors from forming inside vehicles"

When fram and arm&hammer team up nothing can stop them!

Lol seriously its pretty good

I don't think you're going to be able to mask that. Exhaust fumes have very small particles- we're talking down to 0.02μm. And some of the exhaust is just condensate. There's plenty of larger particles as well, especially in diesel fuel, that can be filtered out by a better cabin filter. But the tiny ones and condensate will pass right by and still give you that stinky smell. Just try to hit the recirculate button as quickly as possible when you get behind some dirty diesel or rustbox jalopy.

Fram actually makes pretty decent air filters. I saw an experiment a guy did on various air filters on bobtheoilguy and Fram was right up there with Wix, Purolator, ACDelco and others. BTW, K&N was the worst.....

Oil filters on the other hand, don't touch those with a 39 1/2 foot pole.

did you actually pay $70 for a cabin air filter?

edit: I see it is 70 for a two pack. Thought it was 70 for one.

For under $10 it's worth a shot, especially considering the filter I have now has no additional properties other than filter media.

The Fram one gets great reviews too, I read some of the reviews that mentioned the Fram one and they said it fit a little bit too big, some had to cut it. I dunno, this one has 5 stars with over 3K reviews which is pretty darn rare, especially one that does not come up as fake reviews. See here: https://www.fakespot.com/product/epa...tivated-carbon

My initial thought was going to be "Look for an activated carbon filters". Glad to see someone sells them cheap (at least by US standards), You Canadians are getting hosed at $70. Ouch.

May have to look for those for a different reason out here.

To comment more about the cabin filter, I took the car out for lunch today. I could smell two different fast food restaurants in the car when I drove by on AUTO mode. Yuck, this filter I have is terrible.

The Auto mode applies only to the temperature regulation - In the summer when it's too hot, in Auto, it will engage the recycle function when the indoor temp is set low. In the winter when the heating is on (in auto), the recycle will never come on automatically.

When anything is overridden in Auto, the Auto indicator goes out to indicate that at least one function is no longer in Auto.

I use the recycle when in situations where I am behind a stinking car or school bus and don't want the fumes to be sucked in. No filter will guard you agains that.

Note that, in some Lexus cars, the Auto mode includes the detection of fumes (lol) and the recycle is automatically engaged to prevent these fumes from entering...

I bought the Fram Fresh Breeze / Arm & Hammer filter because of the same issue. I could smell if the car in front of me had someone smoking a cigarette in it! The new filter didn't help much, if at all. Still, for the price, it can't hurt...
