Buying a demo

What's your opinion on buying demo? There is one in my area with 8500km on. If it's a demo, assuming the car has never been registered, how much depreciation is on the car? The asking price is 31500 with MSRP 32900(base 6MT in Canada) I don't intend to pay invoice price(30268). What do you think the car is worth if the car is in the condition it should be? Any feedback is appreciated.

P.S. Does freight charge apply to demo?

I'm not exactly sure on your particular situation, but I will give you mine since I mine was similar.

Mine was a dealer 'service' car. One of the cars they use to pick up or drop people off, say from the airport like they did for us when I went to pick her up; so I guess you could say mine was sort of like a demo.

It had 6,000 miles on it, and it was in perfect condition. I got it for 22,900 before TTL. It was a killer deal, and today I have no regrets buying it.

That's not to say that all 'demo's' are going to be flawless and won't have the possibility of issues. But, as far as I go, I love mine, and it still runs like a champ.

My 2004 was a service loaner and had 16k miles on it when I bought it. It's been fine. My parents just bought a Civic demo in August and it's been fine as well. You just need to make sure it's in good condition, and I'd ask for more off the price than what they are asking. IMO that isn't enough of a discount to make me buy the demo over a brand new one.

it all depends on how they treated it..i know at the dealer i worked at, there are a few demo cars that the sales guys will drive around and use as the "show car"..but our dumb ass lot attendants blew the stock sub burnt plenty of rubber within two weeks..
so i guess its a different case with every car.

They wont discount the TSX much, Ive looked all over the us and the lowest Ive found was a few hundred under invoice. You should be paying at least 2-3k less than that IMO.

Yes you still pay freight and PDI. It the car has never been registered, the whole deal is still treated like a new car deal. You have to decide if the deal you are getting is better then a non demo car.

Overall, demo's used to be real good deals for those who didn't mind a few clicks on the odometer. But each case is different.

If you were looking at an 08 TSX demo, it would have to be a smoking deal compared to what they'd ask for an 09. Even with the mileage considered, the dealers *usually* don't discount much even on a demo if it's a new body.

when i went in for a test drive i told them i wanted to really feel the car so they pointed me to the demo one instead of the one i really wanted. I drove that car to its limits..... liked the overall impression and bought my black '09 from the back lot which had 5 miles on it.

Thanks for all your replies.
I will find out if the car has been registered. The dealer is supposed to provide the car history of any car used since a demo is essentially a used car.
I will also ask about how long the car has been a demo to calcuate the depreciation.
According car buying tips http://www.carbuyingtips.com/car2.htm
There are formulas to determine a demo car's worth. I don't think dealers can dispute that and don't think I should just agree on the asking price.

I hope you're planning on paying less than invoice?

No way you can get a new one for that price.

From reading your other posts you stated you replaced your tires at 28,000 miles and also your brakes early. Someone had a hayday driving your car.

Nope, it's a very common issue with both the tires and brakes. Honda in general is very weak with brakes, and lots of other people have complained about the tires. My tires still had plenty of tread on them, they just didn't do well in rain/snow. And I know I'm not the only one complaining about the brakes.

I must be lucky then. I still have the original brakes and tires with almost 64,000 miles. They still are excellent in the rain (drove in it over the weekend).

In Canada maybe in the states too (not sure) , Freight and PDI, AIR tax GAS tax, and Admin Fee will be waived if you are buying a DEMO. The car only hit dealerships in the begining of summer, it has'nt been a demo for too long... Check the car over yourself.
