Buying a 2010 TSX with 159k miles
I've recently went to a Bobby Rahal dealership to look at a 2010 TSX with technology package. The interior is spotless and the exterior looks good. However, it has about 159k miles, which I am guessing is all highway miles. The car fax is clean with good service records. The salesman even showed me the 161 point inspection with things that need to be replaced or repaired. They're selling it at $9995 which I believe is under KBB price. Would you consider buying this car?

I have a 2010 and I'm at just shy of 90K, while I am very happy with this car, 159,000 miles is a lot. And if it's not a manual, I would walk away. What things were on the 161 Point inspection that needed to be repaired or replaced?

Depends on how long you plan on keeping the car. I grew up in a family where anything around 100k miles was "overmiled" so 159K scares me.
If you really are interested in it, make sure all the 100k maintenance things have been done. I'd also check to see if its still the OEM suspension. That's a lot of wear and tear.

My personal use, cars start to have trouble after 100,000 miles, by 150,000 I've pretty much worn them out. A lot depends on your tolerance for repairs, aka will your boss tolerate you being late. Do you have alternate transportation? etc

I think it's worth getting into the 15k range at least (budget permitting) to find something with less than 100k miles.

My '09 is coming up in 200,000 kms, which of course is less in miles...still a landmark though here in Ka Na Da.
Mine is a 6 speed, but for the higher mileage autos I would make sure the timing belt has been done, trans fluid maintained, stuff like that.
If it's a highway car, that's in your favour.
If your dealer has a good rep, you trust them, and the needed repairs they indicate on the 161 point inspection won't inflate the cost of the car over it's market value, then it's likely a good bet.
Good Luck in your choice.

It's a Bobby Rahal dealership so I think they're a reputable dealer. I believe the TSX has a timing chain so I'll have to check on that. It has been babied at the same dealer since the original owner (only owner) bought it so I believe that this is a solid car. CARFAX Vehicle History Report for this 2010 ACURA TSX: JH4CU2F62AC020600

I have 148K on my 2009 and it is still going strong. Granted, I have the 6MT, but wear and tear on the rest of the car would be similar.
I don't think I would be concerned with that amount of miles on the car. But then again, the price reflects that. If you want less miles, you pay more money, it's your call. I will repeat what others have said, check what maintenance records are available and what has been done.
The 2.4L has a timing chain, the 3.5L V6 has timing belt.

I would say buy the car under conditional circumstances that the engine shows no signs of oil consumption. That's the main issue with these vehicles at the moment. It would only take 2 months to figure out if it is burning oil.

id buy it. i bought my 2003 cls6 with 156k miles on it in 2013 and it hasnt skipped a beat.
those of you that get new cars around 100k miles, must be nice.
ill literally drive it til the wheels fall off.
ask the dealer to put it on a rack and check the underside yourself.
my friend has a 2004 tsx with 215k miles on it. granted hes had problems, its still been a good car.

Everyday I'm rofling
If you only have a 10k budget then you shouldn't be buying a tsx. You can get plenty of "non-luxury" cars with half the miles for that price. I don't see the point in buying a car that's only going to be a money pit in the very near future.

save some more money and get a lower mileage TSX. While honda/acura's are known to go far beyond the 150K miles worry free, the k20/24 haven't kept that reputation and the auto transmissions haven't help either. But if you are in a budget and must have this car then go ahead. Just do your homework and be prepare to pay repair should things go bad, on the other hand if the car is problem free then you made a good call.

My TSX is a 2010 and I just broke 190k miles. The car itself still runs good, even if it's a little beat up. My transmission is still smooth, just checked the timing chain and it's all good too. ride's gottena little bumpier but that's to expect. Just some perspective from a high mileage TSX driver

However, you seem deadset on it. So go ahead. Buy it. Tomorrow.
You're spending $10K on any, and I say any car with 160K miles? Are you the same General Manager who'd sign Peyton Manning out of retirement to a 5 year guaranteed contract? Or a 34 year old running back to a 6 year extension?
Think about it. That car has more miles in 6 years than Jenna Jameson had in her 'career'.
It's not about headlights, or if it has fancy wiper blades, Tech Package; it has more miles than one would logically spend $10K. The folks who suggest to save another $5K, or get a loan for a larger amount, to get you to $15K, where you can have a car that is much fresher...is good advice.
Your budget of $10K gets you a very nice, used Honda Accord. Say a 2008-2012, 4 or 6 cyl, with under 100K miles.
A car with 160K miles is a proud car I am sure and yes, there's folks here with 2010 Acuras that have even more mileage, but seriously, the entire skeleton...suspension will need love, the heart and lungs...engine and tranny become a concern. Might feel great sitting in that seat, but remember what you are sitting on...your wallet.

My 2009 TSX auto tranny has 153,000 miles on her and she's running great. I do all my own maint and religiously changed the tranny fluid every 30,000 miles. It's not the mileage on the car, it's how the mileage was put there.
A police car or taxi have hard miles on them.
if the car you considering buy looks like it was well maintained and drives good, go for it.
