Is anyone using HIDs for their DRL?

Just curious why i dont see it more often. I know we have a few routes to go through getting our options here:

we have aftermarket bulb swaps... i currently have the nokya arctic white 65w bulbs and i am pretty underwhelmed by these, they seem barely whiter than stock and the high beams are mas-o-menos too

then we got LED DRL option and with this we get some weak high beams too, and although they look nice from some angles, very nice actually, i feel like these lights dont diffuse that great just cause they are LEDs and look basically negligible anyway, someone mentioned that their decoders got really hot and noone really followed up on it so the things i mentioned above and the 80 dollar price tag make me kind of weary

any reason more people arent using HIDs in our lows? i feel like there was some really obvious glaring reason why we arent doing this but my mind is drawing blanks

i think they won't be good as our low beams because our lows are also our high and with HID, they take longer to "warm" up. i'm probably wrong though...

well, reason why i really like HIDs for our lowbeams is because of the amazing projectors. with the drl's, there are no projectors. hell, there arent even reflectors (right?) just the housing itself (or is that the reflectors? LOl idk)

quite honestly, my drl's are useless. i have nokya arctic whit as well...i only like them cuz its blue when its off and when you look straight into it, the housing reflects the blue.

i meant HIDs in the DRLs in the last line.

i am aware that the HIDs in the DRL setup would be reflecting like shit off the housing but in the daytime hours it really wouldnt produce any blinding glare to other drivers. we already use em in our fogs anyway at night.

and yes i echo all your sentiments ed, the only nice thing is the blue reflection when they are off and you catch the right angle

i wonder if its just the nokyas that are weak, and if i got the 85w version if it would make any difference

it would be a bad idea. the DRLs are also our hi-beams, except less power is sent to the bulbs so the it isn't as bright. HIDs do not work this way. power is sent to the ballast which will ignite the gases in an HID bulb and as far as i know, there is know way to adjust it's brightness by sending less power.

my guess is that the level of power for DRL won't be enough to ignite an HID. but i'm not sure w/o know the technical details of the car.

i think it requires too many watts and might melts the housing or wires. Some member here melts his fog housing or wires by using a higher watt bulb

I actually tried putting HID in my DRL but did not work. as soon as i turn the car on, it started to flash... kinda like strobe light. i am assuming that there isnt enought power sent as DRL. Not sure about when its in high beam. i turn the car off as soon as it started flashing so i didnt try with high beam.

i have HID for my fogs and i am planning to re-wire my fogs so they turn on independant from the head light and use my fogs as DRL.

you can turn off the DRL just by taking the fuse out and it will still work as High beam. so my bulbs are OEM bulbs.

HID DRLs would not work because DRL's receives only 50% of the power that is supplied to the high beams. As a result, your DRL's will flicker really fast since HIDs require the full 100% of power to function correctly.

I put HID in my fog light, and they're nice. As for HID in DRL you can do it, but it will always be the same light level, and you need a DRL adapter harness used on LED DRL kits. The adaptor gets the DRL signal and draws enough power for led or in your case the ballast.

However you should know you would technically have not high beam, and aftermarket HID kit put out only fair light in a reflector housing. In area like I live I need my high beams ore I might total my front end with a deer. Those damn suckers pop-out of nowhere and always in pairs; plus I drive kinda fast.

that would require a full retrofit.

the projector is what gives the ability to have bi-xenon. an electrical shroud lifts up to produce the high beam, as it's only one bulb

How much do you think a retrofit like that would cost? just parts, no labor.

Depends where you buy the projectors, ddm projectors will run you about $60-70 parts/shipping. Theretrofitsource will run $150+. Then you'll need the bulbs/ballast and possibly additional wiring.

You could always run the Spirior Bi-Xenon headlights.
