went to do EGR cleaning. it looks different to me from DIY
Had a day off from work today and thought of cleaning the EGR port. Car is '00 TL with 165k miles. Have had it for last 5 years since 105k miles and never cleaned that.
So I open hood and remove the top plastic and one metal plate and what I see is different from what I have seen in other DIY guides and videos. Is it modded?
There was a marking on some screws with a black marker and a bar code on the thicker metal cover, will attach pics of those too. What do they represent, any ideas?
Pic 1 - what i see after removing covers -
Bar code on thicker cover -
Black marking -
I guess this hole is for air flow - cleaned it with carb cleaner -
Metal Cover looked like this - cleaned the part in red.
After cleaning -

Just by the pics I can say somebody already did the EGR Cleaning... That's tidy for what you would expect after 165K... Mine had crud all over the place, it was a mess and I did it at 114K.

Don't sweat pic differences, diy is probably still using a 99s pics, 00 and later got more ports at cyls for egr- more to clean!
The black lines are simply installers marks to indicate a bolt has been ck'd for proper torque, Put a mark across it and always have visual verification of the work being done, and still holding.
Procedure:
Did you use 3 cans of carb cleaner and run a wire, or metal coat hanger (not kidding) thru that hole you cleaned in the big open area at end of manifold- soften and poke with the hanger from that hole thru the inner LENGTH of the manifold = till it comes out the 2 holes -under the egr valve itself at the opposite end of manifold?? (when egr valve removed to allow cleaning manifold)
You also want to service the throttle body while its off the car, Clean IACV in bottom side of TB unit

Did you leave the manifold itself in place???- just poked thru the 1 hole a little?
You have to remove the manifold - not just its cover, Clean parts on cover and all the parts of the manifold, 6 ports plus the CRITICAL inner passage= that feeds them
you remove the bolts in the center of manifold, seen after top cover removal- installation torque spec is 14-16 foot pounds- a few hoses and it lifts off the engine Place on workbench and remove TB for cleaning
Note the gasket on top cover- can be installed flipped UPside - down!!! and cause havoc! Match the gasket-- to the Covers holes- or it blocks an important port

thanks for your answers! I was scared/surprised to see something new and did not want to screw up anything. But now will go ahead and clean the rest of it internally
What was the IPT barcode sticker there? Is it OEM?
Attaching this picture would I only need to remove the 4 high lighted nuts? And hoses from the surroundings?

^ More like all of the gold ones.
Looking from Above:
-O O Oo
oO O O O
Each circle represents a Bolt and the little circles are the Nuts.
You need to remove all of them.

As for removing the manifold it self, you remove ALL the bolts in the manifold, not just the 4 you circled.
Oh, and that barcode is normal.

no- he only removed the cover and did spray and poke only at the one hole = not quite what the diy says I hope!!
You will find those white stickers on many parts of the car, just tracking info as it moves thru the assembly system

I do have a torque wrench, but that wont teach me about intake manifold on an engine. And I felt it was very rude, i hoped the power of this forum was to help newbies as well as the experienced ones.

I don't mean to be rude- sometimes it happens- ask my wife other descriptive terms!
Since you DO own a torque wrench you should also be able to tell which bolts would hold the manifold in place, and want to know the spec torque for them-
That is critical to be done right,,so I was trying to help!
If you dont own a torque wrench = stop on this job until correct tools are in hand.
We have to know your ability level to give best advice
The way you removed a cover and poked at an egr opening, while doing a nice job of wiping up oil found in there, clearly not understanding or following any diy from here or a decent source online,,,thats going to make you appear less than skilled enough to be having at this on your own
If you need hand holding consult the diy- it should lead you thru every step with every bolt circled etc, We combine the talents of many users here to write those, with most instructions leaning toward noobie skill levels - so anyone can master their repairs
Please note: my first suggestion to you was to ck the diy's again for more help as you obviously needed it! Then I poked a little fun, member for 5 years with noobie question,,,its gonna happen! take a joke man, my advice is worth far more than you are paying for it!!
You have been a ziner for 5 years, mostly ghosting based on post counts- so it would be a reasonable guess you have spent time reading post and diy's, and should know basics of egr cleaning.
In numerous current and ongoing threads where egr is suspect in poor running,
we talk about removing the entire manifold to place on workbench- remove TB to flip over and remove IACV for cleaning etc etc the 3 cans carb cleaner and wire coat hanger to poke the internal passage LENGTH of manifold, and each of the ports to cylinders (99s have 1 egr port, all later years have 6)
