Well, Did my Valve Job today!!

Hello Aziners!

Finally I decided to get rid of my noisy valve train that started 2 months ago... The end results are GREAT! No more ticking and the engine feels shit tons smoother!

The issue? Well all my front Exhaust valve lash was gone! The jamb nut was on top of the valve 24/7 making the feeler gauge insertion impossible! This was in Cyls 4, 5, 6 rear cyls where somewhat tight but not as tight as the front ones (Actually cyl 2 was out of spec by 0.02mm)..

My Intake valves where off by 0.03mm at most..

This is my valve train at 197K original miles! From the Dealership till today:
Seems the gold from Mobil 1 Syn EP oil makes it look rather good!

Front:

Rear

Adjusting the Valves:

And the Final Shot:

All in all great service for being my personal first time doing it on my car.. It was done before at dealership but I didn't want to pay anymore..

Took in total 3 hours from disassembly > Adjusting > assembly.. Also I removed the Strut bar for more comfy so that added more time.

How's the back feeling ?

Things really look nice and clean for the mileage. Getting everything back to spec ought to help your MPG and make the engine run smoother. Way to go man !!!

My back hurts a lot.... Cyl 1 was a royal PIT"Back" specially the exhaust valves..

I was getting +420 miles on it already at highway I seriously doubt it can get better than that... Cross my fingers

I didn't replace the seals they were good and re-usable! No doubt getting new ones will be a peace of mind tough..

^^ Yeah I noticed that too on many J series Valve pics... Why seems to be hotter rear head? Like oil gets a little bit burned or perhaps there is not enough oil in the rear head?

Well heck it! if it works why mess with it, right?..

Awesome job! Debating if I should do this as well this weekend. The valves are not ticking, but I'm replacing the rear cylinder head gasket due to it leaking...

My guess is just the added heat when shut off being so close to the firewall there isnt as much cooling as the front?

Well Honda only states to check them if they tick BUT tight valves don't tick at all and that could lead to a burned valve and it becomes expensive then...

If you are removing the Head already then Adjusting the valves is the easiest thing to do before closing the valve cover..

3 hours is a pretty good time. Mine took approximately 5.5 hours with a few breaks in between. Maybe next time (hopefully won`t be a next time) I`ll wear a back brace.

Yea I think it just stays hotter for longer in the engine bay. I would be really surprised if it ran hotter for internal reasons.

Well perhaps it could be a little more 3.3 hours? Removing the Strut bar really took its time more from the plastic cable holder thingys in the driver side that were a PITA to remove/install.

Yah I tought the same since the front head gets cooling or some cooling from the radiator fans and the poor rear head gets heat soaked all day with no extra cooling.. Funny thing is that seems the J32A3 doesn't seem affected? If you find the "Ericthecarguy" DIY on valve adjustment @Youtube you will find that the rear head is almost pristine as the front one? Dunno why but its the only one Ive seen that isn't stained.

Thanks! My oil changes are every 6 months or 7300K which-ever comes first since the day I bought it.. Switched to Synthetic at around 78K? something like that..

^^ I want to see a pic of the J37 Head with the VTEC on the Exhaust side... Haven't found a single pic online and I'm dead curious of how they pulled it off.
