trans problems

VIN 013744 Purchased 2002 TLX in May 2001. 18,000 miles no problem. I love this car. Mostly leave it in D5. Lead foot it only occasionally from a stop.

Those of you who have not listed your VIN, if you reply to this message, I will add it to the ledger.

This post has been helpful to a lot of members, so it would be nice to keep it current.

At this rate, it may go on forever.

I bought my car back in Feb. 19,000+miles and no tranny problems...well, I feel a little slipping when I drive on freeway. I'm gonna bring it into the dealership once I get my new bodykit, some minor bodywork(fix some dings and scratches), and extend out my Greddy Evos then I'll go ahead and drop it off at the dealership assuming that the tranny doesn't go first already (knock on Wood)

Just got the bad news from acura

Well, acura called today and the problem with the car was transmission. I only had the car for 3 weeks and it only had 737 miles on it. They are replacing the transmission but i was wondering if there was any way to get the whole car replaced instead of just the transmission. I mean its a 2003 tl-s and it already has problems...what more if i have it for my whole 4 year lease. Is there a way to request that the car be replaced?...considering that it is under 1000 miles and ive only had it for 3 weeks. This is really pissing me off because i just got the car and im already having problems. Some advice would be really helpful....Thanks alot to all who reply

What is your Vin# and build date? This would be interesting to note, because they supposedly have resolved the tranny issue in the 2003s...but, is there a build date that indicates the start of the FIXED tranny?

Replace the car right off the bat for an initial tranny incident? I doubt it; look at it this way--it's like buying a brand-new computer system from a store, then having the hard drive go bad and afterwards expecting/demanding the store to replace the entire computer system instead of just the hard drive. Unreasonable IMHO, especially if the root cause of the problem has been eliminated...

Like someone else said, if the tranny goes bad a few times, then it's a different story. Besides, didn't you say that it was a lease? I understand that you want a car that doesn't have any major problems during ownership, but it's not as if you're gonna keep the car forever...

I got a 2003 TL-S and I haven't had any problems with anything except for imperfections in the paint and a squeeky seat.

Most companies selling computers have a 30-day no-question-asked return policy and all of them will gladly replace your computer with a new one in case of the hard-drive failure.

The same thing happened to me with my old Intrepid. I had it for 650 miles, then the tranny went. They wouldn't take the car itself back but replaced the transmission totally under warranty (took some work--they wanted only to replace the solenoids, but when they told me it was 6 weeks wait for the part and only two weeks for a complete tranny, it was a no-brainer to argue).

I had no further problems with the car for the remaining 40000 miles I owned it. If not for the tranny, it would've been the most reliable car I'd ever owned.

Lessons: a) the dealer ain't gonna give you another car. b) chances that you'll have another major problem with your TL outside of the tranny are pretty small, especially with this model.

Okay, I should have said, "after the return policy has passed." But I think that most people got the point...

Has anyone seen this recall on on 2003 TL.

http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...8491.html?NEWS

Number Potentially Involved: 17,551

Dates of Manufacture: June – July 2002

Defect: On certain minivans, sedans, coupes, and sport utility vehicles equipped with V6 engines, a timing belt tensioner pulley on the water pump is misaligned and could cause the timing belt to contact a bolt on the cylinder head. Eventually the belt could be damaged and fail. If the timing belt breaks, the engine will stall, increasing the risk of a crash.

Remedy: Dealers will inspect the water pump, and if it is one of the defective pumps, the water pump and timing belt will be replaced. The manufacturer has reported that owner notification began Aug. 30, 2002. Owners who do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact Honda at 1-800-999-1099 or Acura at 1-800-382-2238.

my tranny's gone....

2002 tl-s with 35,900 miles on it and the tranny's acting up

it only started after i got the fluid flushed.....whenever it shifts from second to third and third to fourth, the car hesitates and it feels like its staying in neutral for a second because it revs up higher and then shifts real jerky

Get it off the road and to the dealer.

Here's hoping they get it fixed up fast for you!

Exclamation Just joined the club!

Confirmed this afternoon the trans will be replaced.

2002 TL-S
VIN 001040
29,750 miles
built February 2001
purchased March 15, 2001

In addition to the trans, the front rotors and maybe original pads will be replaced due to a warped rotor. The service writer said there's a TSB on the rotor warpage. Also the RR door window frame exterior tape is puckered again and will be replaced. All under warranty.

Background on the care and handling of this car. It's been a daily driver, surburban/urban 52 mile daily commute. A couple of vacation trips thrown in. It's my spouses car, always driven conservatively. Anally maintained by myself including tranny drain/refills at 15k mi. and 29,600 mi. The first tranny drain indicated nothing significant - amber color fluid not burnt with a small amount of ferrous particulate on the drain plug magnet. The last drain (a week ago) was the same as the first, but with even less ferrous particulate. I did notice a few aluminum chips in the drain pan that looked like machining chips. I'm not really sure if the aluminum chips even came from the tranny, could have come from another garage project.

Failure mode. First indication of a problem was engine reving abnormally during a WOT down shift at 30 to 40 mph. No flashing lights. This was during her Friday morning commute. So, since I've been cautioning her to watch out for strange tranny actions for the past year, she called me after babying the TL-S to work. She wanted to know if she should "test it" on the way home.:wow:
I said no, to baby it. Well, it kept jerking while rolling it bumper-to-bumper traffic, so she took it straight to St. Louis Acura. I called ahead to tell them she was coming. They had a loaner car ready for her.

St. Louis Acura diagnosed it today (Saturday!), no details, and ordered the tranny and other parts. All parts should be in Tuesday and the car ready Wednesday afternoon.

I'm really glad we got the 7yr/100k mi. free tranny warranty extension. I've got time fro two more replacements, unless Honda/Acura solved the problem.

John,

Did you get a letter in the mail from Acura about your extended transmission warranty? I have 2000 TL that is beginning to exhibit some of the similiar things as your TL-S. Am I to call my original dealer or wait for something to come in the mail?

rhvehoc,

Go to acura.com and sign up for owner link. You have to enter your VIN on owner link to register. From there, it will tell you on the first page after you log in if your car is covered in the transmission warranty and the ignition recall programs.

There's a back order condition on the tranny again. Mine was to be ready last Wed. No call from St Louis Acura, so I called yesterday. They said I'm number 51 on the tranny list! Should be ready next Wed. We'll see.

I had number 3 put in this week. The wait was 1 week (5days). There were two other in getting theirs changes, both TL-S's, the dealer said that they have changed about 25 so far

The TL-S was finished Wednesday. 19 days in the dealer.
I addition to the tranny, rear door frame tape was replaced (again), and brake rotors turned. Now worse than before! Also fixed a wind noise in the rear.
$3613 all under warranty.
The parts guy said only 2 trannys came in for the 3 TL-S in their shop. There still appears to be a tranny shortage.

I think my '03 TL-S may be a victim of the tranny problem......I picked up the car on 3/28/02 and already have 22,300 miles. It seems like the car sometimes does not know what gear to go into. When slowing down (especially for EZ Pass tolls) and then hitting the gas to get going again, I sometimes hear a bang and the car shoots forward like it violently downshifted....

When driving back from Boston to NJ this past weekend, on the highway, it felt like the car downshifted and then upshifted quickly, but it happened 5 times within a half hour. It also feels like the car starts to buck around 40mph. I commute 52 miles each way to work and back each day and now feel unsafe. I find myself driving without the radio and both hands on the wheel at all times just in case. (I usually drive with one hand and the radio really loud!!) The car is going in this Friday, but I guarantee I get sent back home at the end of the day saying they did not find a problem..........

Good job pianoman. Thanks for updating the list.

BTW - Why has our "veiws" figure changed? Did we reach the upper limit and reset?

Now maybe your people haven't seen it happen at their shop yet, but I have to believe that Acura has sent out all kinds of memos to their Service Departments about this.
So it's a little fishy to me that they would plead ingnorance at this late date.

The problem with dealers is, Honda tells them one thing and then another; Honda says to cover the tranny under warranty and then without warning, others are denied warranty/that tranny is defective.

It boils down to either Honda telling its dealers to SAVE money and hence get REIMBURSED through another method OR, it encourages its dealers to cover the warranty and admit fault.

There's obviously an incentive for dealers to cover transmission claims under warranty; however, at the same time, there's likely a limit as to how many DEFECTIVE trannies can be repaired at NO COST to the consumer hence them denying that the tranny is defective.
