TL Ride Quality(Suspension)- Why is the ride so rough!??!
I just put in new front tires (yokohama Avid H4s) and balanced them and my ride is still INCREDIBLY rough! Is this just my TL or is this just the ride quality. If this is just the norm, then I need to learn to just live with it, but I can feel every bump and irregularity in the road while I feel like I am being tossed around in my seat and I want to know is there anything I can do about this or is it a mechanical problem??
-Joe
And BTW- The car is NOT under warranty, I know that the usual answer is "go have it fixed under warranty", so I am letting you know now, that's not an option.
(It's a TL-P 2000, 205/60/R16 tires)

Do you have a Type S? If so, then that is just the way it is. You pay a price for the handling with a stiffer ride. If you want a softer ride, you need a regular TL, but of course you pay in performance. You can't have super handling and soft ride unless you get fancy with adjustable suspension systems, etc. Hope this helps...

very hard to tell with without some info like tire size and tlS or tl. but here's a good guess. either your new tires have a stiffer sidewall which offer better responce but will transmit more road feel through the suspension, or they are overinflated.

Sorry about that-
I have a 2000 TL-P with 205/60/R16 tires- and it is possible they are overinflated, and also, I know I need new back tires, could that contribute?

if the backs are SEVERLY worn unevenly you might get some vibration prob but i dont think thats the case here. its also hard to tell if you are sayin the ride got rough after the new tire or "rough even with new tires".
i'm assuming its the later, you own a luxury sedan, it really souldnt have a rough ride, but without a real discriptive account of the ride its hard to give an educated guess. a word like rough is very subjective.(I'm thinkin of a baja style lifted trunk on the freeway) are you sayin stiff(like a 70's-80's corvette) or maybe ????ahh hell who knows

It feels as if the suspension isn't absorbing the shock fully. I can feel the impact of the bumps and ruts in the road, almost to the point of slightly bouncing me in my seat. It's at low and high speeds (although less noticible at higher speeds), and it's even on seemingly normal pavement I feel a slight rumble. I can hear and feel when the car moves over even small irregularities in the road. I don't know if you need more specific than that, and I am not sure if I could be....

^ agreed. also check all ball joints and make sure that your sway bar is firmly bolted. kinda doubt that the shocks are bad also. i have 118k on my 2000 and it still rides great and im running 225/50/16

So your main recommendations are to check the ball joints, sway bar, and struts? Are those pretty much the main things it could be?
This must mean it is likely my car's problem and not the TL line. anyone have an idea how much a dealership would charge just to look at the car for these things?

It's used, and I just bought it, and I suppose it has been this way since I bought it (1 month ago).
Like today, I was driving over an older road and I was bouncing in my chair and feeling a lot of impact from the road.

Yes, I test drove it on the highway and city streets, but it needed new tires and the mechanic I took it to said that was the cause of the rough ride, but now that I have replaced the two front tires, it's still there...

I dunno, it's hard to say. What car did you drive previously? Maybe it's all relative or maybe you have a real problem.
Your best bet is to go test drive a new TL and compare.

the acura tl's are made 2 feel a little "rough" or i would say sporty. its sorta like a BMW, but if u want somthing soft, w/ an acura name on it go with a RL. If u want somthing cheap like a TL and soft go with a Lexus GS or ES. But Please. Stick with Acura

Your shocks may very well be gone .. I would look into those.. maybe a leak in the front ones...
good advice from someone above: go test drive another used TL or a new one .. preferably another used one in your year/model etc... and compare.
Then, tell the ACURA MECHANIC to drive your car and compare the two... and suggest changes in the suspension

y dont you go test drive a new/er tl and see if it rides the same way? that way you might have something to compare to to see if there is an issue?

You shouldnt be feeling tossed around in the TL-p. Did you feel the same before you changed tires?
You said you've had the car for a month and I assume you just put on new tires. Different tires can make a difference in ride, but usually unless you go to a narrower sidewall (which you didnt do) the differences are mostly in tire road noise, not a harsher ride.
BTW, what tire pressure did you put it at?

I am not sure of the tire pressure, I need to buy a new guage (can't find the old one).
Acura dealers (I called several dealerships), over the phone told me it sounds like the struts have worn.
The car has almost 85,000 miles so they ALL said that for a 2000, that could be enough to wear out the struts, especially if the previous owner drove it hard.
Does that sound right? I hate to have to take it to Acura for $85/90 dollars just to have to get a confirmation of that being the problem. But they all seemed to agree seperately that it was likely worn out struts.

Finally! Great to hear someone has gotten to 161k miles on a TL. Do you have the original tranny?
