That stupid 4 CD Holder above the radio
Has anyone done anything with it worth while?
Are there any websites that have anything else that might fit in it to be more useful than holding 4 CD's?
Thanks

There is someone on this board that put an aftermarket navi screen in there...it was hot. It fit perfectly! I forgot his name though...he had it so that it looked like the CD holder, but when you pess the button, the motorized screen comes out. And there was another guy who had the shop separate his screen and player and he had the screen grafted to where the stereo controls are and put the single din unit where the CD tray would be....

Yeah, it's all gotta be custom..I'm trying to figure out how to do that for a touchscreen navi right now..I have a shop in West Chester figuring out the design for me...
Sonnys99tl..My TL is a 2000 and it has it. I believe any 2nd gen that does not have navi will have one.

I am in the same boat my man.
My woman keeps convincing me not to get a pop up screen.

Hey Guy, I see that there are many differnt things that you can do with the 4 cd tray, I have a 2000 with no Nav. I took the CD holding flaps out of the tray and use that tray as a place to hold little items. Of course I modified the tray so that noting can fall out behind. I found it best to hold a few dollars and what not, great little hidding place. If you want to see what I did, PM me and I will send you a pic of my tray.

I call me old fashion but I just use it for holding cd's. You can put 6-8 cd's in there and its beeter for the ones i listen to most so i dont gotta getmy cd case from the back.

I have a 2000 TL, it also has the 4 disc holder. If you get into the newer TL's with the 6 disc changer, that tray becomes much more useable! It's just a nice little storage tray. Same goes for 01 CL's and newer.
I called the dealer to see what the price would be on the newer tray (just storage; no CD holder!) - they wanted over $50 for that plastic tray! Too rich for me for a piece of plastic. I want to swap it out with someone with a newer TL or CL!
In the mean time... I have also removed the disc holder parts and am using it for just basic storage. You know... gum wrappers and such.

I custom fitted a 7 inch Pioneer screen where that stupid cd tray was in my 99. It took awhile and quite a bit of squeezing, but it worked. I actually had to trim the plastic above the cointray, move everything down, and add custom screws to hold the cd console in place. Of course, that is all hidden by the plastic side covering. Even though I did it all myself, it looks pretty good and it allows me to keep the stock headunit and have a custom screen in the front.
I am also the proud owner of a new set of RonJon Inspyres and when I get those put on in the next week or so, I will try to post a picture of my entertainment system (headrest screens, dvd player, a/v plugs, etc) at the same time.
So, to answer you question, there are things you can do with that pointless cd tray. But, like many people said, it requires some customizing.

the person who placed the screen in the cd holder was snook(tim), the owner(ex-owner?) of this site. He placed a pioneer LCD in there. Lotsa modification needed. IMO, looks nice, but not worth the headache trying it.

I kept the two fascia pieces and placed my AudioControl 3.1 (line driver/eq) there. With the stock plastic over it, you can't even tell it's there. Plus I velcro'd my cd changer controller to it (similar to the picture above by badazztl).
The space is 1/2 ISO DIN--so you could put anything you wanted there. The only location for bolts is in the head-unit (two tabs of metal stick up from the HU to hold the cd tray), so if you replaced the factory head unit, it's going to require fabricating something.

I took out the center tray and I use it to store my extra phone that my mom doesn't know about. It's big enough to store small stuff like that.
