Steering wheel radio volume control

I've recently notice that the radio volume up/down control at the steering wheel works when the wheel is NOT at the centered (wheels straight) position.

To the best of my knowledge the steering wheel has never been removed or tampered with.

I'm still using the factory radio.

It should work no matter where the wheel is. Are you saying it doesnt work in some positions?

I had the same problem with the volume control, it worked randomly, if i moved the steering up or down it work again for awhile, i ened up changing to an indash TV, never connected the control never thought about it again

I always figured it was a false contact somewhere but never looked into it

It's not hard to get back there and check the wires. Disconnect battery and wait 10-20 mins for all power to discharge so you don't end up eating the airbag. Check the DIY for installing a new steering wheel for help getting the airbag out. Once it's out check your wires for radio control I believe there's 2 for the radio. Maybe over the years it hung up on something then got weakened by the turning of the wheel and road vibration. I'd say if you find a problem cut it out and solder a new piece of wire in and cover in heat shrink. I think if the wire were to get messed up it would be somewhere near the steering wheel mounting nut or nearby it.

I could be driving straight, and when I press and hold either radio volume button it won't work until I move the wheel left or right (as if I'm changing lanes, turning).

You may need to take the wheel off and put some little dents on the copper ring by the reel. (its in a TSB) If you would like i can re-host the PDF of the fix.

Yes, please re-host the PDF. My radio controls sometimes do the opposite of what they're supposed to do and I'm guessing that it's related to this TSB as well. Thanks!
