Sputtering sound
When idling for a long time and after warming up. the subtle sputtering noise that comes from the rear driver side is now very noticeable. It sounds like a "putt-putt-putt..." like a muffler connection is leaking or something. It is becoming annoying after a while.
Has anyone else experienced this??

Yea i had this happen to my 03' tl, when i brought it in to the service center, they told me that it was an emmision controll device. I reasearched it more and it is an air pump that pumps air in before the catalytic converter to get better emissions out of the car. The dealer said they could replace it, but it would probly make the noise again.

There is nothing that pumps air in before the cat on the TL. What you were told about by the dealer is the EVAP canister. It doesnt pump any thing into the exhaust.

I know this is an old thread but I googled this issue because I just noticed this sound on my 08 TL-S! Does anybody have a definite answer to this putt-putt sound in the left rear??

^^^ The noises that come from the rear driver's side on our 2nd Gen TL's usually originates from the EVAP components located inward from that wheelwell.
You may want to check the 3rd Gen forum for more specific info on your '08 TL.
