Spark Plug Mileage

At what mileage did you change your plugs. I have an '01 CL (same engine) that is over 11 years old with 82K miles on it and original plugs. Still runs fine with OK gas mileage. At how many miles did folks change the plugs?

Car makers will tell you that you can go 100k miles on plugs. I call BS as they will tell you everything you want to hear to make you buy their cars.

I was always taught that you should change every 45k miles but with the new plug technologies today, you can go about 60k now.

You'll definitely notice better fuel economy and cleaner fuel burn once you change them.

Just my .02.

I just changed the plugs at 160000 miles. Don't know if they were original but they were pretty nasty. Its like a whole new car now!

you are ready for a can of seafoam in half a tank of gas- do that twice for a complete induction and fuel system cleaning ($150 at shops-20 bucks this way)

and install a fresh set of NGK Iridium IX plugs
these were gen3 stock plug and are an upgrade for us
NGK Platinum was stock 00-03 but irids cost less and are a better plug

no subsituting joe schmoe 2 buck each plugs
the right ones cost 8 dollars each (roughly) and are worth it!!

anytime after 60kmiles and you will notice a differance in mpg and performance on the new plugs

dont forget to change the cabin air filter, ck engine air filter and our new one- clean or replace the PCV,, like we did every year back in the day, 10 bucks

also see the diy on egr port and passage cleaning,,needed every 75kmiles.
easy 2 hour DIY at a casual pace

did you do the timing belt and water pump- thats called for at 7 years or 105kmiles whichever is first
most go way over with no porblems, but time is your enemy on this part

I change them Every Year hahaha
They are not Expensive enough to make them Do a Full 60K on a Set tough.

Cabin Air filter is a Must for me every 6 months... but it costs 12 bucks so No prob...
Motor Air Filter is K&N so is a Recharge every 6 months too, The K&N Recharger lasts for about 3-4 Recharges is you apply the Oil carefuly.

Just my 2cents.

K&N thinks the kit does 5 filters,,maybe smaller one than ours?
but the amount of oil is critical-
a neighbor caused all sorts of probs to his truck when he used an entire can of oil on 1 filter!!

note: K&N says 50kmiles and clean but thats based on measured airflow of new paper filters flow rate, when K&N DROPS to that amount its time to clean
Nothing wrong with doing it every 5 or 10kmiles if your air is bad

annual plug change at 50 bucks per set,,seems excessive as they are working good till 50kmiles+ ,,unless you are using some funky 2 buck plug that last 3 months

cant fault you for being way ahead on filter maitenance and cabin filter replacement
We do the cabin filter once and forget that 3-4 years have slipped past,,suddenly the filter looks like black lung again--
there is more road contruction dust and air pollution in the area every day
better a filter catch it than your lungs
I use the antibacterial/charcoal ones for 20 bucks a set

do you run your choice of fuel system cleaner too? and in the oil?

you young guys with your good backs and abilty to reach the rear plugs easily~

I didnt know charcoal prices had gone up so much

DIY charcoal filter: at drugstore/pharmacy section of store,
buy ACTIVATED charcoal tablets,,in a small jar ~$5 or cardboard flat- ask pharmacist

Open the capsules and spread across the new filter in several sections
rub in gently (disposable gloves a good idea, hard to get off your fingers)

keep the rest of the tablets for human use:
for when someone drinks too much,,, or having a bad gas problem, fast internal movements take 2 capsules with a big glass of water- see directions on label, relief is on the way

again thats ACTIVATED charcoal `for human internal consumption`
NOT bbq charcoal

Its the same stuff they make patients in the ER drink, before resorting to pumping the stomach..absorbs toxins

Thanks Skirmich I hesitate selling them at work just cause of the price, they work great for dead rat smells when we can't get the rat.

Woahh! That DIY sounds good! Ill try it in my next filters.

Hahaha I hear you with the Rear Spark plugs but after alot of Changes the only tricky one for me is the 1st Spark Plug on the rear from Left to Right the One exactly beneath the IMRC its a PITA to get my Extensions to fit without hitting the firewall.... Aww but its still a 30min Job.
