Selling my TL. Disclose all issues in ad?

So I've decided to sell my 99 TL. I really can't dump $3000 to fix the tranny and $700 to fix the oil pump leak. I have a more economical commuter now and just want to unload the car. The car is very drive-able right now, but does slip shifting down from 2nd to 1st. The rest of the shifts are pretty good. It's got 161,000 miles, but a damn clean car. I listed it for $2k, but have had only one hit with an offer for $1200. I listed the issues with the car on the Ad, but feel that it is going to make responses scarce. A friend suggested that I remove the 'problems' from the ad and play stupid when prospective buyers come to see it, but I just can wrap my head around that approach.

What say you, Acura community?

That's misleading and unethical. I couldn't in good conscience do that either. Have him meet you in middle at 1750?

As is. Don't disclose anything however an 18 year old car is 18 years old so buyers probably know a vehicle that old for $2k isn't going to be flawless..

Just dump it with those problems.

I always sell things as if I were buying them. How would you feel if you were the one being taken advantage of? Would be a pretty shitty person to lie about issues and stick them on someone else. Also, at 2,000 it will probably be a kid spending ALL of his savings to get a car finally and then it shits on him and he is out the 2k.

You already know the answer to your question. Disclose all the major issues. There are multiple reasons why you should disclose issues. First off, I believe in Karma so I disclose (major) issues when selling a vehicle. I however do not usually disclose little things like say a leaking hood strut for example, if it is not a brand new car I am selling (and I don't sell cars for a living lol) then I do not disclose little things like that and leave it up to the buyer to inspect. However if I get asked anything I 100% will disclose (even tiny things like chips or scratches if asked). Hell I even told someone about 2 rock chips in my MDX's windshield when asked about the condition of the windshield.

Secondly you never know who you are dealing with, some people can get really really mad at you for selling them a POS and they will take action to retaliate. This can be in the form of property damage or other ways of damage. Even going as far as violence. I always take this into account when selling so I tell people what's up.

Thirdly it just feels better to tell people the issues so you have a clear conscience and I could not in my own conscience tell you to hide the faults.

I think 1200 for a TL that age with those issues is VERY fair. Sell it and move on. Secondly what I do if i have a car with a major issue (aside from pricing accordingly) is that I do not mention it in the ad. But when someone calls me, I will outright tell them what is wrong. When my MDX was sold, I told the lady over the phone asap that the navigation does not work (she didn't care and said she'd use her phone). So in closing, treat others how you want to be treated yourself.

List it "as-is" and include the notice "Hey, the car is 18 years old with 161,000 on the odometer. Don't let the beautiful cosmetic condition fool you. This car will soon need a transmission and oil pump, at least! That is why it is priced at only $2,000".

Sell the sizzle. Is the interior really nice? PHOTOS. Does the engine run like a sewing machine? DESCRIBE THE SMOOTHNESS.

Sell the good in the first paragraph, then describe the major bad in two sentences, ending with, "And a sundry list of small items one would expect in an older car."

But I sure would not list every thing that is nagging at you. For others to wade through the "list of issues", all that crap may have far less import to someone who wants only reliable transportation.

Honestly, a '99 with 161k and needs a transmission, I'd have thought $700-$1000 would be the top offer ...

I sold past year Infiniti I30 97 in perfect mechanical shape with only leak of oil from. I would sue anyone who would sell me car with serious issues and do not disclose it.

Opened up a can of worms asking the question. If you sell it without disclosure and the new owner finds the post and the listed problem, be ready for a law suit.

How so? "Sold as is where is" is a legally binding agreement.

I would let him know about the shift issue and oil pump and I would let him know that the transmission will obviously need to be replaced at one point. Let him know about the A6 transmission swap and show him where he may further research it online. The worst that could happen to the poor guy is that the tranny fails in 2 months and he takes it to Joe Shmoe Transmission shop pays $3,500 for a tranny overhaul or regualr swap and ends up in the same boat 6 months later when it fails again. Your a good person, stay that way.

That's a great deal, I bought my TL for $500 with an oil leak and some TLC, completely drivable that same day though. I think you're getting away with murder if they are willing to buy such a common car with problems for that amount. Counter with $1500 and take what they offer.

So I left the ad up with my full disclosure statement. Yesterday a couple of guys came out over an hour and a half away to see it. They very briefly looked it over and even declined when I asked if they wanted to test drive it. Mind you this car is damn clean, runs great, and the tranny is not even that bad right now and hasn't gotten any worse over the last 10 months. They offered me $1700, which I accepted. When I asked if they were sure about not test driving it, they stated that you can tell a lot about a car from the person selling it. I'm a pretty clean cut person, but even I wouldn't buy a car without a test drive. Hopefully they get many hundred more miles of uninterrupted service.

Funny thing is, after I sold it, I had two people who made similar offers. One was a mechanic who had a tranny from a wrecked 99. He was ready to come pick it up for my asking price. No regrets.

Can't nickel and dime in this price range with a known issue. Car is 18 years old and needs a few thousand put into it, even though it is clean. I'd say you got very lucky on the offers! Glad you got it sold for close to asking. Do you have any pictures of the car that was sold?

Nice! I'm glad it worked out, I'm also interested to see what it looked like?
