Replace/reposition Nav climate controls
 

Looking to remove the Nav dash unit and retain the ability to control the fan and a/c .
I plan on keeping the housing (replacing with a tablet) and the lower controls just above the radio.
IS THIS POSSIBLE?

As you may already know...the navi screen controls the manual HVAC operations (fan, a/c: on-off and ventilation directions). in the non-navi model, those controls are handled by the analog dial that is nested in the same place of the dashboard that your current navi screen is located.

that being said, I think that it could be possible to replace that part of the dashboard with the manual controls, but not have both.

If you want to place a new aftermarket tablet, I believe most who've done this place a double din tablet right below the stock navi screen.

I think there were some at some point that were able to find a screen unit that allowed interfacing with the oem HVAC system, but I think the solution was rare, pricey and no longer available.

I'veseen this as mainly software issue as there is a touch screen.
Can't this be hacked?

Reverse engineering of the NAV A/C controls had been attempted years ago but I never saw any outcome that could be readily replicated without major time and expense like whitetiger mentioned.

A few options:

* Leave the Nav where it is and put the tablet where the radio is(not the greatest position for viewing or controlling while driving but the easiest if dead-set on a tablet)
* Move the Nav to the radio position(considerable work involved) and install tablet in the old Nav position.
* Delete the Nav and replace with non-nav A/C control head relocated to where the radio is(again, considerable work involved)
* Forget the tablet and install a Double din stereo unit with bluetooth, handsfree, Apple & Android connections, retain factory steering wheel radio controls, etc.

That sucks but hey at least you can turn your old TL into a poor-mans TLX lol

I posted this on a different thread but I wanted to add to this thread and say it is possible to convert from a navigation to non-navigation AC dial on this car. I just finished this conversion on my '03 TL and it went great.
My navigation system was really outdated and it had that notorious screen tearing so it was really hard to see the AC controls on the screen.
I purchased the non-navigation dash trim and storage tray on eBay for about $130 all together. I also purchased an Alpine ILX-W650 to upgrade the radio along with American International ACU-K862 Dash Kit,Metra 70-1721 Wiring Harness, AXXES ASWC-1 for steering wheel controls, brake bypass adapter from eBay, and a subwoofer retention adapter from mobilemaxcaraudio to keep stock subwoofer.
You can remove the CD changer from the trunk to free up cargo space if you do this conversion. You can't remove it if you have the navigation system as it kills power to the navigation.

The only modification needed is to extend the hazard light switch, I ended up cutting the wires and used Wago connectors to extend the wires.
All plugs are the same, no other modification or programming needed except to add the clock wires.

The clock wiring is:
Black = Ground
White/Red = Constant
Yellow = Ignition
Red/Black = Illumination
Red = Dimmer

I wired the clock to my upgraded Alpine ILX-650 radio. It appears you can wire the clock to the AC connector but I didn't want to mess with the AC wiring.
