Listening to my buddies 2001 SE, his is better. BUT, ours has two high level outs, so we can upgrade ours a lot. He wasn't sure about his, and I never looked into it. If ours came with tweeters in the doors like Edmonds said, it would sound a LOT better. Even the Maxima and BMW guys with their HK system complain about the subs rattling, and being weak.

The Max system has 7 speakers and 200W, the TL-S has 5 and 150W (this is what's on Edmunds, I couldn't a power spec in the TL brochure).
The extra tweeters on the "A" pillars in the Maxima do make the highs more pronounced, especially on classical or jazz music.
IMHO, neither system goes loud enough, but at full volume, both have little distortion. The 6 disk in dash changer in the TLS beats the trunk changer in my Max, but the 2K2 max will get an in dash unit as well.
Compared to the AM/FM radio I had in my first car, both are excellent. Both pale in comparison to some of the trick aftermarket systems out there
Bottom line - in stock form, the Max system is better. For you audio experts and tinkerers out there, neither system is going to cut it.

My parents have the 2000 Maxime GLE with the Bose System and I have to admit that it has more punch and more of a bass to it then my 99TL Bose System.
You can feel & hear the bass better in the Maxima Model.
You should hear the Mark Levinson Audio System that Lexus offers, no need to even think about an aftermarket audio system. That will be the farthest from your mind. ML from Lexus is incredible.
