odd "popping" sound on TL-S

In the last couple of days, my '03 TL-S has started to make a "popping sound" from the rear end. Not happening a lot, no pattern - has done it a couple of times while in stop-and-go traffic. Heard it last night when I pulled into my garage - after I had turned the ignition off. Same thing this morning - I got out of the car in the garage at work and I heard it again. A hollow popping noise from the rear end area of the vehicle. If I was a gambling man, I'd say it's on the driver's side.

Any suggestions before I go on a "fishing" expedition with the dealer???

Thanks.

I hear a popping, sputtering, slight hissing sound that is intermittent coming from the rear driver side. Sounded like a loose muffler pipe or something. It's noticeable after idling it for a while and noticed since September. The Moron service rep said it was a rattling from a screw driver I had stored on the trunk. I told him that the screw driver was stored on the jack compartment (passenger side) and was rubber handled. He just gave me a puzzled look.

Time to look for another service department. I hate when they start giving me science fiction stories.

Dlpickering, I have had that same sound since I purchased my car last February. I have no idea what it is but can't necessarily "duplicate" the sound so I figure I'd just let it go till something breaks.
