Can you guys recognize if the torque converter on the one I linked above has any rainbow-ing effect? I will call the number listed and maybe I can just pick it up tomorrow if I can haggle the price down to to what was suggested above...

Final parts check

Hi - I am about to order the seals that was suggested to be replaced... I just wanted to double check that I did not miss anything. I would hate to re-order again and pay another shipping fee... can someone please just verify my list so far... I would really appreciate it!

Thanks!

So upsetting... i was about to pick up a used tranny with 72k miles for 600 but someone snagged it before I could actually pay for it... urgh!!!! Now my wife is telling me maybe a reman av6 is more logical.... i am not surr if that is a good move given that the pricepoint doubles up, but the warranty claim may be questioned... i did call a reman shop from georgia that supplies for autozone and said it really shouldn't be an issue as long as the seals and the fluids are properly maintained... total for that will be $2050 otd...

Now, a used tranny I found locally from lkq with 112k miles will cost me around $885 with 6 mos warranty... i did not tell them that it will be used in an acura but they will need a core.... now, will they know that the unit I am returning for core will be from the acura???

And another one with 117k is at 800otd with 30days warranty...

They will find out once they run the trans name B7WA which is exclusive to Acuras..
The AV6 is named BAYA.

Does the remano shop knows that you want to put the trans in an Acura and will still honor the warranty? if that so then there is no brainer here... Just make them put that on paper.

I did... the guy said it shouldn't be a problem because honda/acura is pretty much the same car... the only thing i am forfeiting is the full core, thus it totals up to 2050... the transmission reman itself is 1799 freight shipped... core is 500, but he said he'll split it for the acura tranny... Maybe I am thinking far ahead as there is really no guarantee for transmission longevity, but buying a reman AV6 means that this tranny had a prior issue already...

urhg... i cannot decide!!! good thing this is not a matter of life and death... now my wife is in the mix... i was perfectly fine with a used one... in fact, I even think that the 117k miles for 800 OTD was reasonable...

It doesn´t mean it had a problem a remano trans is a guarantee that the clutch packs are new, Basically factory new.. There is where those shops gains money, they buy burnt transmissions like yours for the "Core" then rebuild them and gain a load of money when they sell it to other guy.. That core that are taking from you for 500 bucks means another 1799 bucks transmission once its rebuilt.

Its just smart business it doesn´t mean the AV6 you are buying has a flaw or anything.

Got it...
Well, at this point, money is a factor and I need to get over that missed opportunity with the lower mileage transmission... i still have a week left before i start the disassembly so i hope to get lucky... if not, then i guess i have to be content and put my faith on the higher mileage transmission within my budget and hope for the best...

Home sweet home...

Finally drove the car home today... It was only about 15 minutes drive to my place and the first 10 minutes was, A OK... I was on SS mode and not really trying to push my feet to the pedal... and then, for some reason, I decided to shift to D5... and that's when I felt the first slip... then CEL, VSA and the Triangle light came on... D5 blinking... at that point I was at least a mile from home...

When I got home... waited 10 minutes and re started the car... VSA and triangle light went off but CEL remained lit... I figured this was the same code as before...

Apart from the transmission experience, the car feels solid, suspension was tight, and engine was running smooth... although, I couldn't figure out how to reset the radio... I do have the code but when I enter it, it keeps giving me an error message... Any idea?

Sorry if this thread seems to be dragging already...

But I just wanted to share that I was able to drive the car last night to my friend's house in Maryland, about 55 miles where I live... I was on SS the entire time, and since I was driving on the beltway and mostly highways, I was 80% on 4/5th gear, only letting the car downshift when I hit a traffic light... Anyhow, the car ran smooth and really only felt the slip when I needed to reverse from my friend's garage... it did not engage instantly and the car jumped/jerked when it finally did...

So on with the quest of finding a transmission... I am really being discourage by my friend to buy a used transmission... I can probably stretch my dollars a bit but it somewhat defeats the purpose of me buying the car for a very low price... plus the warranty issue in the long run... unless I actually needed to file a claim, I highly doubt I would not encounter problems when I file a claim...

I guess at this point I just need some re-assurance that going used is a better decision in the long run for both reliability and financial stand point... The best I found so far is $800 for a 112k miles tranny with 30 days, or 104k for $901 with 3 mos warranty...

I guess no one here can really tell you the best route to take- a used or rebuilt AV6. I think any AV6 with under 100k or thereabouts that has good fluid in it and looks physically in good shape should prove to be a good 'gamble'. Maybe go for the one for $800. I am thinking if you are going to get a bad one it will likely prove bad right away within 30days for sure.

Finally bit the bullet

Yup... I understand... anyhow... I did finally decide to put a deposit on the one with 112k miles.... apparently it is still installed in the car and they would pull it out with a deposit in, and if I see that it is not in my likimg, or within what I expect when I pick it up, I can always refuse it and get the deposit back... I was able to talk them down on giving me the unit for $800 all in, then a $26 core will be returned upon exchange of my transmission... now I did not tell them that the one I have is from an Acura so I am not sure if that will be an issue... but heck, at least the loss is minimal at that amount...

Now I am in the process of trying ro learn how to do this swap myself...

Good luck! Let us know how it turns out. However, at $500 for a car plus the $900, that's $1400 for a car. Even if you end up getting a mechanic to do it, that's a steal.

You need to start by removing the wheels
First you need to do is remove BOTH Axles.
Then the intermediate shaft behind the Engine.
Then everything is simple, Remove the battery, Starter, Cables, etc.
Then remove the TC cover and remove all the TC bolts
Then remove the trans support bolts, lower subframe (that takes the front engine mount too) take out both rad fans for room.
LASTLY remove the trans bolts to the engine that is basically the last step. When the trans bolts are undone you need to pull it because of the aligning dowels (DONT LOSE THEM!).

That is the super quick guide but you should get an idea now..

Can I remove the passenger side axle along with the intermediate shaft as one, not needing to disconnect both pieces? Wouldn't that be easier to do?

2006 Acura TL transmission...

So when thought all is well, the place I put a deposit in for the tranny I was supposed to get called and said the case was damaged and cannot sell me the unit... I guess it's good that they were honest enough to let me know but now, I am left without a transmission...

Anyhow, I called a guy on Craigslist and said he has his own shop and buys junk cars for parts and it so happens that he has an 06/07 Accord with 89k miles for $750 COD with 60days warranty... he also said that he has one from an 06 TL and he said that that transmission looks very identical and may work??? Anyhow, I will probably stick to the Accord AV6 if indeed he has one... hopefully this is not a scam and he is as legitimate as he claims since he said he has a shop and will give me a receipt for it...

Just check the trans if is the correct one, The trans has an ID TAG with the VIN Number from the car it came out.. Check the vin to see the trans is indeed from an 06 or 07 Accord.

You don't want the A/T from an '06 TL.

Those fail, though much less frequently and for very different reasons. Certainly not as reliable as the 06/07 Accord V6 A/T.

Is the vin stamped on the case itself or just on a sticker like id tag? Any idea on how i can verify the mileage or just take the sellers word and hope he's being honest....?

it has a metal tag with 2 rivets into the case, just below the trans name sticker.
The metal tag is green in color you can see it in this picture:

I'm keeping my fingers crossed... I will probably just pick it up so at least I know where I can possibly find him/his shop if I encounter any problems within the 60 days warranty and save me some change for the delivery fee... and at least, I can see the unit itself prior to anything...

on a side note, how can I drain some of the fluid inside the torque converter?

You can remove the torque conv from the trans and tip it on its side to get most of the fluid out. I'd replace the seal between it and the trans

Thanks. On a different note, I was wondering if there is still a chance to get a free manufacturer replacement on the rear view mirror... i came across the threa regarding the exploding rear view mirror and the ones on mine already has the discoloration in the middle and makes it blurry at night... i tried to email the person noted on the thread but it bounced back...

I know the dealerships were replacing the rear view mirrors early on (like early 2000s). My first TL I had owned I had dealer replaced in around 2003. I doubt that campaign is still open. I did get one for an inlaws TL recently from a yard for like $15

Here's what I got...

I am not skeptic... I just read from another thread that this may be from a later model and not from an 06/07 since it has an oil jet installed and some blue bolts... I am working on getting the tranny down tonight and I cannot afford not to have one to put in... urgh... keeping my fingers crossed...

Well, fortunately, I was able to recoup my money... Funny the guy offered to do the job... He quoted my 1k for both labor, parts and fluids... however, he said he will use a transmission from an 06 TL... He said he has done many swaps and the one from an 06 TL is just the same as the one from the AV6... while it seems a good deal, I don't think I wanted to trust him after he gave me a wrong unit... which I am pretty sure he knew about... I will try to go to another yard tomorrow and hopefully get the right unit...

For some reason the TL units have bad reports... Dunno whats the difference between the TL and the AV6 but better not take any chances.

I agree.

Better to just go with what is a proven solution.

FYI called Ripples auto parts in upper marlboro two weeks ago for a friend looking for 07 av6. he has since decided to part out the car. they have one from an 07 which was rear ended. car has 67k. their asking price was $950.00. counter man said trans still in car so mileage can be checked as well as over all condition of car

I called them as well but they gave me 1200 over the phone... they would probably take less as you mentioned... anyhow, i got one from baltimore via car-part.com.... 775 otd with apparently 73k miles... fluid was reddish but not black and did not smell burnt... we are about to install it... got the tranny out after 4 hours... hopefully we did the swap as it should... i decided to keep the oil jet kit from the tl...

Mission accomplished...

Finally got to drive the car with the av6... test drove it for about 100 miles right after... no signs of leak whatsoever and I am hoping stays that way...

It took us 15 hours straight since 3pm yesterday... could have been faster but the guy from my friend's shop who's helping me do the swap was slow and unfamiliar with the acura... good thing is that he did not complain at all and worked all the way through...

One question though, we filled the av6 with a total of 7 qts of dw1 and initially, the dip stick showed a low level but since tha tranny capacity was 7.3, we stopped adding more... when i got home, i checked the level and it looks above the 2nd dot and may be over.... should i keep this for now until i do a drain/fill after 3k miles???

I decided to keep the jet kit as i thought it may serve well for the tranny...

If you are over the top Dot when the trans is hot you need to drain some fluid.. It wont hurt you in the long run but it can cause foaming and puke the ATF out through the breather tube while running.
