Need help determining if HID bulb is out or ballast is dead

So I understand I can switch the bulbs to test if I have a ballast or bulb problem but I want to first solicit your help with clues I gathered.

-Pass HID went out yesterday. When I turn off the headlights and flip them back on, the pass HID works for about 5 seconds after which it dies.

-For the 5 seconds that it is working, I hear the same "hum" (coming from the ballast, as I gather) as the driver HID but once the pass HID dies, I hear no more hum.

-Also, for the 5 seconds that it works, the pass bulb looks purple-er.

Bulb or ballast?

Bulb or ballast?
proably ballest, but still the best way to tell would be swapping the stuff around, swapping the bulbs around is only like a 5 minute job (with the correct tool, or modified scews already) so try that first

If the driver side is working, swap the bulbs.

If there's the same symptom on passenger side, it's probably the ballast.
If it works normally, then it's the bulb.

If it's the bulbs, replace them in pairs.

Wear gloves when handling the bulbs since the oil from your skin can cause them to fail early.

or just don't handle it by the glass, and only handle it by the base, , then no gloves are needed
but yeah the oil from your hands will drastically shorten the life of the bulb if it gets onto the glass

Purple bulb is usually a clue that it is the bulb.

I used Philips 4300K D2R. You can find excellent deals on eBay. I bought a pair for about $68 shipped a couple of years ago.

just ran into the same exact problem last nite. noticed it turn really purple while driving and by the time i got home it was dead. flicked the lights on and off and it stayed on for a minute then died again. just ordered a pair of 5000K bulbs from hidextra. hoping this takes care of the problem
